Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

For what it's worth Otte, I like to put the fuel filter close to the tank before the bulb. My thinking is keeping crud out of the bulb is a good thing.

Bosses mean, from an online dictionary "A round knob, stud, or other protuberance, in particular". In motor talk, there are three stick-outs on the block with a machined, flat mounting surface. In your case two have threaded holes for bolts and one plugged threaded hole.

Or it means your Mom, Mother in-law and wife, in no particular order.

Fantastic. You have answered pivotal questions on the where the bosses are on my motor, a good idea and rationale on the location of the fuel filter AND solid life advice on who my bosses are in everyday life. In the Netherlands all young men must serve in the armed forces for a year or two which is solid life skill stuff. Maybe in the USA all young men should re-do a boat before the age of 16 and get boating and life advice from the sages of the starmada.

oooh, don't get me started....i'd also add "and learn to ride a dirt bike so they can learn about The Unyielding Laws of Physics as applied to wheeled vehicles and about Pain, before we ever let them onto the public roads in a 4000lb battering ram"

Had to fix that, Otte. We want the younguns healthy, not hacking from fumes and glasser dust.

Get the fuel pump on and her running good. :D

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Does anyone happen to know the size screw needed to mount a new non-vro fuel pump to the two bosses on the power head of a Evinrude 50 hp? Maybe I missed the place to order them from iboats. One other question about pump installation - The plug I unscrewed, what is that for/to and what purpose will it serve when the new fuel pump is installed? The plug has a small o-ring gasket under the screw so my guess is to take that off so the new three hole gasket can lay flat on the engine. Correct?

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

I figured out the screw size for the fuel pump. 2" 10-24x if anyone is interested.

Now that the oil tank is out of the boat for the VRO I have extra storage space in the back of the boat. Currently I have two batteries situated on the starboard side which makes the boat list over to the driver side a bit. Now I can move my starting battery over to where the oil tank was and side the auxiliary battery back... or should I keep the cranking battery where it is and move the auxiliary batter to where the oil tank was, or should I move the battery under the driver side seat, or maybe fabricate something and hang a battery from the bimini cover. Hmmm, maybe I drop Jason a line to get a suggestion of where I can put my battery. :highly_amused:

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

GPS Speedometer app for my LG phone works pretty good. I tried it out a few times with a comparison with another boat running with me and its pretty close. I hit 30 and 31 mph with the 50 horse on a windy/choppy day. The engine ran a bit rough by the end of the day and there was fuel/oil mix drool out the plug holes. Pulled the plugs and checked to check the gap... .050 and .075 on really fouled plugs. I think the plugs got back when the VRO fuel side went and the oil was still pumping well. Soooo, gaped new plugs at .030 (specs on my 1989 50 horse evinrude, some say .040) and put plugs in with a Harbor Freight torque wrench at 15 ft. pds. Ran 'er out some more on Sunday night she ran even better. :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

My small tachometer is coming in a few days so I can check the rpm at idle. What should I be looking for on an idle rpm? I have looked but not got anything definitive. I have seen 600-850 rpm at idle. I can do another quick search in the forum too.

I figured out a way to get the through hull bilge port off. I used one of these little numbers from the inside of the hull multitool-corded-single-speed-300x153.jpg and cut the stinker off. Put my new plumbing together will a little butyl rubber and I seem to be good to go.

Don't know what your idle should be - prob about 750-800 in gear. Seems to be a semi-standard.

I pull 32 MPH with my 16' tinny and a 50 Merc. You are a little heavier so I think your doing good.

Were cutting the bilge pump through hull? I used 5200 on two of then, so If I have to take them out

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

GA, I have a fitting on starboard side about two inches from stern for the bilge water to be pumped through. The nipple for the hose was broken off so I had to replace the fitting. I think the old fitting had been put in with 4200 or 5200 because I could not turn the old fitting off to save my life. Butyl Rubber is not a bad substitute in my experience. I have used it on my smaller AL boats, even below the water line :faint:,in the past with good results. B.R. does need to be painted or it seems to shrink from exposure to UV rays.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Gonna paint up the cowl on the Evinrude next week. I searched for Evinrude paint colors without much success. So I took the cowl to the local automotive paint shop. Last summer the shop set me up with auto paint for my '97 Honda Accord and shot the back bumper and under all the doors... any whooo.

The shop took a "picture" of the paint to color match and I got this paint for the 1989 rude. Tested a small spot and it looks like a solid match. It is a one stage enamel paint that buffs out to a nice shine.

I used this on the Honda Accord and these Preval spray cans are the bomb

I will get a before pic up soon. I will have to check out on paint prep to make sure I get this right.
