My 40' shipping container carrying my new (to me) boat has arrived from Long Beach California, and last night moved to the shippers yard for unpacking.
Should be in my hands in 7-10 days.
Not bad considering it was a trans-shipment that left 30 Dec.
Hoping it is not a container full of match-wood.

Here it is, so what do you think.
I bet I am the only bloke on this board with enough nuts to have a go at one of these.
I desperately wanted a brand new M model, but US Dealers arn't allowed to sell to overseas customers.
Go to this site, click on 'boats for sale' and mine is the 26' MacGregor.

I only wish that I had heard about this earlier and was able to help . . . Aldo has filled me in on some of it and he and I had actually been doing some similar homework. We missed the beam part . . . doh! I hope it works out, the funny thing is I actually asked him specifically about 26 MacGregors as they are a very flexible boat and there are a bunch of them around here . . . 8)

I have spent the past 2.5yrs studying the MacGregor and would have acted earlier if it hadn't been for this darned drought.
I know a lot about them, so if you want any sites to visit for info, then let me know.
There are a lot of them all over the States. Roger MacGregor puts them out at a max rate of 1 every 2hrs.
His criteria is a boat:

affordable to an average family
can be towed behind a family car
best water ballast system in the world
can both sail or plane with the 50ph motor
pull a skier (ideal for family)
overnight with sleeping for 6
enclosed head
small galley
reasonable sized dinnette
economical to run and maintain.
plenty of vulume
got the boat real low on trailer so easy to launch and re-load (a true drive on)
boarding ladder on front of trailer

a new basic sail-away M model without motor is just over US$20K. You just add what you think you need.

[colour=blue]I can see it now........ Scarborough marina, a few beers and bowl of garlic prawns - then board the SS Kiwi (which is moored at the marina) for a nice cruise up the channel to Caloundra marina for a few more beers and some morton bay bugs. 8)

Beautiful boat Phil. I had no idea you could have a combination sailer/planer.

That took care of 26' of the container. What kind of goodies did you get in the other 14'?

Darn it Phil.
I have been a big fan of the 26' MacGregor for many years.
Have sailed and motor boated them many times.
Not my own. POUT!
I've known our local dealer for 17 years. (Seattle)
We could have worked out a deal.. a new used ( one month old)
26' MacGregor for about 26K
All legal.
But thats hind sight.
Would have loved to sail into port and sold you a used (2007) one :)

A free trip to your country! 8)

Correct me if I'm wrong. But I think the 2000 model was the first one with 6 foot head room.

Amazing boat and you will be happy with it.

Cheers

Re: My 40' Container has arrived from the USA

We could have a problem Aldo, with going to Caloundra that is.
You see, I have never sailed before, so am hoping it comes with a manual.

Boonyal, I mucked up with the extra space.
The 2 axels had to come completely off (with guards and wheels) so that took up some room.
MacGregor has made these things exactly 1" narrower than a shipping container, and with axels off, they just sneak in for height too.
I need some Ralley or Jenny Bare wheels and 235 and 265 tyres for my '75 F100, which, had I been able to plan things better, would have gone in, saving me big buck at this end.
Now have to buy them here i guess, at a much higher price.

Link, depending on the motor, and add-ons, an '07 at that price would have been worth looking at.
The greatest difficulty I had was having to deal with people I would never meet, and having to trust them.

Anyway I have a 'grand plan' in the back of my mind, so this is my trial-run boat so to speak, a learning curve you might say, establishing links and systems and contacts etc.
Now if I can learn to sail it, and enjoy it as much as i think i will, then I may move to phase 2 of my plan.
Cheers

[colour=blue]Phil, I've sailed once - 10 days on a 45ft cat (bareboat) in the Whitsundays. If you don't mind a bit of bump parking - I'm your man. 8) :%

Re: My 40' Container has arrived from the USA

I had a MacGregor once. Had to sell it to settle the divorce. It was fun while it lasted, but I wouldn't buy another. It was just a 14' Venture cat, and far slower than any of the scows I've owned. The fastest was the E-scow. I sailed that solo when I couldn't round-up passengers. They say you can pull a waterkier with one. I wouldn't be suprised, but a power boat would have to get the skier up and then hand-off.

Then I bought a Sloop. Painfully slow, but it had a bathroom and a frige. ;)

Enjoy! Are you going to trailer it or moor it?

Is that like one of those naked cruises, Aldo?:p

I think you might have gotten the Mustang in if you could park it on a diagonal ramp. But now?.. methinks you missed your chance.;)

[colour=blue]You know how to hurt a man, boom :'( :'(

A bareboat is an EXPENSIVE hire boat that you skipper yourself. Basically, a complete sailing novice pays the boat owner a lot of money to let him hand over a million dollar boat for a while.

But I like your idea better.....................8)

Hey Phill, I can sail (very well as it happens), I'll teach you.
The cost of my flight, hotel and beer has got to be cheeper than bending your new boat.8) I've even got a valid Aussie visa.

Hey, what are guys doing talking about boats when there is so much political unrest in the world. ;)
This post will self destruct in five seconds.
