Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

All,

I got rid of the offending post, so I deleted those that referenced it as they wouldn't make sense anymore.

We don't do personal attacks here. That line can be blurry, and it is why I left ed & inge's considering language and cultural barriers. Thanks for the back-up . . . :)

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

they sell the license plate cameras on ebay for 200$ but ,they are kind of useless unless positioned right in a squeeze point or somthing,. in your case they make a dual camera for your situation 1 at 16 degrees and one at about 6 degreese for a wide view. your camera you had was about a 6 degree . a 16 would have zoomed on the plate a bit better , but still its hard to get a plate off a consumer type camera. i have a system set up in my apt complex and ive caught 3 hit and runs on my vehicles and recovered funds on each . mainly working with the police and alot of bluffing. interviewing neighbors with pictures of the perp vehical . saying the other neighbor said it was your buddy visiting , and i can see your plate etc . threatening hit and run in my case ,caused the perps to respond. in your case i would agree crime stoppers should have this footage and someone might recognize the vehicle and or persons . you'd be amazed may-bee at how recognizable a gate[walking] or mannerisms stick out to people who know them.

Those camera zooms and refocus you see on shows like CSI are totally not possible. Once the image pixcelates it is not usable.

Agreed, I'm sure the truck was stolen. I think the only thing that would have prevented this was a pit-bull or some sort of very loud audible perimiter alarm.

You can lock your car doors, the thieves will heave a brick. You can chain everything down, the thieves will cut through it, you can lock your house, thieves will kick it in. If there's a will there's a way.

I own my own screen and window business and you would be amazed at how easy it is to gain access to a home through a window. People are always asking me about security measures for windows. Unfortunately there really arent any...if they want to get in to steal something...they will get in to steal something. I can remove a piece of glass and be in a house in 2minutes without even touching those sticks people put in there window tracks.

Most people without a chemical imbalance are deterred from stealing by the shear thought of the consequences. The other people don't care about the consequences.

Trailer locks keep the honest people honest. These guys probably would have stolen the boat regardless of what you did, they would have just done it a little differently.

And I agree that getting the license number would more than likely show that the truck was stolen but definitely worth pursuing.

Just be glad you have insurance.

Someone at a dealership will run those yammi serial numbers through the system after they're sold for maintenence purposes. Bribe a tech to watch the system.

the good news is you have a clear conscious as to who didn't do it . eliminating that gut feeling of all past shady acquaintances, who your brain would have been going over and over again as possible suspects

It is so true, I'm in the security business and my philosophy is that security (systems) keep the honest people honest. If someone really wants to break-in or steal something then they will find a way to do it. With today's technology with digital video recorders, it's amazing what they are able to do with the video.

Good Luck,

That looks just like the guy who tried to "reposes" my truck, if you're stealing something like that drive a nice truck, have the #s already, and whip up some fake paperwork in case you get caught.

It looked like they reached in the back for some items, there are only 3 ball sizes, and you can get a universal or have one of each, most trailers are at the same hight, or close.

As far as wiring, most new trucks have a bargeman connection, for less than a hundred bucks you can get an adapter to every common wiring plug, I keep 2 in my truck, and 3 hitches for various trailers, it isn't too hard to hook up and drive off.

Sorry to hear about your loss, they did look like Repo impersonators, no one will question a nice new truck pulling a new boat away like they will an old truck. Got any friends with a thousand acres and a backhoe? :D

wow that's jacked up..wow....

my guess is they will strip the engines off / sonar / radios / gauges / and that nice top ..... and dump the boat??

unless they fake a title for it so they can sell it to some poor sap..... which could be possible ......especially of they sell it from a generic location .....such as a mini storage lot etc.. otherwise I cant see em selling it to anyone....

even more likely n florida-------mebbe they plan on usinig it for drug running so they can abandon it as needed....uuhgg...sorry but I'm just trying to figure their angle out.

you could call around some of your local storage facilities and give a description...most storage places are run by mom and pop teams...and they live there etc and know the stoage place well.

seems like alot of work for out of towners to watch your house for a week and then steal it....locals then????????

hope they get caught!

Keep watching area Craigslist and the local free papers, in the event they get that bold and try to sell it.

I've looked at several boats and other items that looked or seemed at least a bit suspicious over the years.

They list the boat on CL, give only a pay as you go Cell phone number, then insist that they have to meet you somewhere.

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

Bottom line is there's nothing you could have done.

Watching the video makes it plain this was a well-planned theft.

Again, it's just my guess, but I would say it's highly likely that they would have been ready for whatever anti-theft devices you could have put on the boat as well.

I don't buy the line some guys are spouting about it being a repo, even if it's mistaken. They come in fast, but what's missing is that they always have someone with eyes on the house so if someone comes out for a confrontation, they don't get blindsided.

Grouse

I agree with what Grouse says here.

A friend of mine did repos when we were out of college 30 years ago. It was a dash in and a dash out, it LOOKED like they were stealing cars!

Sitting further back wouldn't have stopped them. They wanted your boat, knew what they were doing, they looked like they belonged there. Neighbors might have thought they were friends borrowing it.

Enjoy your next boat :D, keep it insured and since nobody died or was hurt don't sweat the loss.

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

Thanks everyone for your support and advice. I have been monitoring every common boat selling site, but I'm pretty sure the chances of it turning up there are slim to none. Fortunately that model boat doesn't seem to be too common so I don't have to look too hard.

No news whatsoever from law enforcement, I'm pretty sure I will never see it again. I have already placed a theft alert on the engine's, all Yamaha required was a faxed copy of the police report.

So far BoatUS has requested more and more documentation; understandable when its a loss this big. I would have thought however since I had agreed value coverage vs depreciated value coverage that they would not have needed so much documentation proving its worth. I thought agreed value coverage meant we both agreed it was worth the coverage level I had purchased; apparently not. So far I am having to prove its value through pics, receipts, registration documentation, etc.

I've pretty much decided if they do not find the boat I will sit out the rest of this boating season. Maybe wait until April or May next year to start shopping for a replacement. This experience hasn't exactly increased my boating appetite.

Obviously chains and locks don't help a whole lot, the only reason they recovered this boat was due to a non working taillight:

Re: My Boat Was Stolen Yesterday!! Caught On Tape

I know the date on the ads are before the actual theft, but this looks like your boat (same year, model, color), with a vehicle with the same color scheme in the pictures. The ads are down, but you can right click the images and choose "view image" to get a larger view.

Chances are its a coincidence, but worth a shot...

Hmmmm.....the Author deleted the CL posting.....either he was getting hatemail from the iboats community......or it was a shady sale....OR.....it was a legit sale and it sold already.....:D

FWIW, the truck in the video stealing the boat is an Excursion, the one in the CL add is an Expedition. Pretty interesting coincidence though . . .
