Re: My Chieftan project

Yah Glen, all I gave the poor fella was a foot of snow to tromp around in while we were talking about IO's and metal built boats:joyous:

Yup, it was great to meet ya Bill! Hey, I'm thinking the next time I see you I'm betting that one, or both of us, will be at the helm of a NEW floating Starcraft:horn::becky::fish2:

Uh yea, snow on the ground and a tad bit cold out too.
Indeed, there will be tin on the water!

Whats the plan on the roller trailer? I got a line on one for my chieftain just almost identical but galvanized..... But before I pull the trigger I hoped to come up with the plan of attack first.

The plan is to leave it a roller as I had one for my old Islander and lauching and retrieving was a breeze and I can use that on days with just my grandson and I. I also prefer them on the shallow water launches as I don't have to back down into the water with the vehicle to load/unload.

Too cool Willy, meet the Jas man and pick up the trailer.

A well worthy trip indeed. The Jasman drives a hard bargain :D He only took one of my trailers in swap and refused any greenbacks that I tried to give him but graciously accepted the fillets I offered.

On the funny side when we got home the wife related to my only unmarried daughter that Jas was a good looking man and would make her a good husband .......except that he was married.

Dog house also constructed. It will not be hinged in, will be removable as I hate having it in the way when doing any maintenance on the engine.
How about hinging the top part to swing upward for inspection and easy access for fuel and ignition issues. The removable lower section would then be smaller and easier to handle and stow when more access is needed. - Grandad

That may be a first: Trolling the Starmada for husband material........... <<<<Those waters are fraught w/ danger lurking just below the surface, careful selection & navigation is REQUIRED........

I must say I am super incredibly hunky boat nerd:becky:

(dum as a big box of rocks but you don't need to be all that smart in male modeling)

Just admiring your work, Willy...really spectacular so far! You've probably got a nice buffer this spring before open water. 24" thick still here on our little lake today.

Thanks. Yes we have some time left before launching around here. The cutters have been going out in the lake breaking ice for the shipping lines and the strong winds we had yesterday and today should really move some ice around and help break it up. The harbors still have plenty of ice yet to lose before any docks will go in.

I was thinking more on the line of inspection doors on each side of dog house would better suit my needs. They would allow to check oil, power steering level, etc quickly but keeping it one piece as far as the overall doghouse would allow easy removal to do any further work on the engine. I prefer lots of room as I deal with enough cramped spaces working on engines at work.

Re: My Chieftan project

Took the trailer down a few days ago and got the Chief sat on it. Didn't really do much else due to time constraints. Went down this afternoon and started adjusting rollers as the rear rollers are not sitting far enough back to the transom. So swapped out the longer arms on the front set to the rear and kept the double sets on the rear and put the singles on the the shorter arm for the forward set. Moved the rear cross member back to the last hole and now have the rear set pretty close to the transom. Now the problem lies that the front sits too low. So this weekend will add some spacers under the front set and see if that solves the problem.

But here are a couple pics when we moved it out from one building to put it in the shop so we could use the lift to raise boat to adjust trailer.

Figured the sun ducked into the clouds when I went to take the pics.

Yeah she looks good even without the direct sunlight.

I see that there is a pretty good amount of the boat not on the trailer, maybe about 1.5 feet or so. Doesn't look like you can move the winch tower any further forward to get all the boat on the chariot either. Kinda leaves the heaviest part of the boat hanging out back there making it tough to buckle the stern down without the straps eating off your nice paint.

Hmmmmm.....

Ya know, I feel like that boat needs to slide forward buddy. I'd bring that winch post forward and even add a length of square tubing on the tongue. Maybe welded on or even add a swing away tongue ya know.

Wow, Willie! It's the 1st time that we're seeing her from a distance...Gorgeous!!

Agua is right...that trailer does look a tad short. I have a dumb question/suggestion...are tongue extensions common?

that gorgeous boat makes the trailer look tatty by comparison....may need to color match it. just like Glen, karma will get you when you can't fish in peace for all the people coming by to ask about your brand new boat.....

Re: My Chieftan project

Yea Jason, moved the winch post up as far as could and by moving the longer forward supports to the rear got the rear rollers within a few inches or so of the transom. Didn't get an after pic today but will have more this weekend. Have considered the longer tongue too or even an extension out of the rear to move the boat back just a bit to keep the bow off the front frame. Will see how the spacers work out first.

Re: My Chieftan project

I'm thinking you pop that winch post in front of the two side frame pieces. Course then you'd have to add tongue though.
