Re: My ?China Bomb? tires got me scared, am I over thinking this?

I can be VERY CHEAP!!
I did put Car tires on the 1,000 pound trailer. They were rated for 1,200 pounds. Ran fine & no weather checks or bulges. 10 years old.

Auto tires RARELY weather check. So I stay with auto tires. I do run with PLENTY of tongue weight.
I figure THAT is what accounts for no sway & long life.

The Hercules are the tires that I have that just failed at 5 years. I just put in an order with my local tire store for 4 Maxxis tires.

Unlike the person in the earlier thread, I have heard of tons of good info on Maxxis trailer tires.

I'd be happy if my trailer tires lasted 5 years. I'd probably be changing them at 5 years anyway. I have heard good things about Maxxis tires, thats what I was looking for originally, but I couldn't find them locally.

Finally some common sense. For sure you need the weight capacity, but car tires beat out trailer tires in all respects.

Some boat trailer manufacturers actually put on car tires on new units, as long as the capacity is correct.

Well guys, you got me thinking about the car and truck tires. The trailer had the 14” “P” rated tires on it when I bought it and it towed really nice, no sway with the extra long tongue.
Playing around on the web I found some interesting info;
So it’s now looking like I will straighten out those OE rims and go with, 185R14 D Max Load = 1,850 lbs.
A few manufacturers still make these for smaller commercial vehicles and busses, the most reputable I’ve found so far is Yokohama. I had Yokohama’s on a Eagle wagon and loved them, went 70K before they went bald.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=8R43568&tab=Sizes

My only concern with these is they are not on the Yokohama website? Hopefully not discontinued.
Tire Rack also has Continental and Kumho in this size and rating.

PS these are LT Summer Highway Ribs, 1.7" larger on the OD Vs the original tires. I have plenty of room.

If you are going to buy LT tires, there are plenty of USA made ones to chose from.

Good luck finding 14" LT tires. Probably special order only if they can be found at all.

Aren't you the guy that goes 10+ years on your tires? Not much common sense in doing that.

I’d go with 15” or 16” but the overall diameters start at almost 30”. I am going to do some more shopping to see if I can find any other 185R14 D tires out there. I’ll buy US made if I can. Tire rack does have the Yoko’s in stock, this size is real popular with the guys doing VW bus restorations etc. so hopefully there will always be a premium tire company making them.
Bonus is I believe they are rated at around 99mph or so, that could get me up north real fast!!
By the way, the tire in post #37 has a DOT code of R5; that is SHANDONG, the same company that made my Tow Max tires I’m riding on now.

Go buy some Maxxis or TowMaster ST trailer tires. I believe you can find certain sizes of the TowMasters that are still made in the US if that concerns you. Like I said before, I just ordered 4 Maxxis tires.

As far as your 185/14 size, that is also going to be tough to find in an ST tire.

What weight are you carrying and are you dual or single axle?

As soon as the weather starts to warm up I’m taking it to the big garden supply place, they have a scale so I can get the actual weight. But guessing; the dry weight of the boat is just under 1k, engine 400lbs, then through in a full tank of gas, three batteries, trolling motor, and other gear it probably tips the old Toledo at around 2K. I don’t know what the single axle trailer weighs, but I’ll guess at least another 500lbs. So package weight close to 2500lbs.
I’m not dead set on the size either, I want to keep the overall diameter 25-27” or so.
I am finding more and more 14” LT’s, they are all made in Europe for delivery vans, small busses, and mobile homes.

Blue Dragon,

In the Inside Sidewall of the tire in the Photo ...

After the "DOT R5 VY", there will be a number something like ... J5SL4Q3210 ...

What are the last 4 numbers.
This is the manufacturing date.

I don't have the tires anymore, but they were a couple of years old alreday by the time I got the trailer. I figured they just dry rotted

Lets look at this ...trailer tires compared to automobile tires.....as a tire company would.

"" If I so much as EVEN HEAR a word about making a NON PEOPLE CARRYING tire as good as a PEOPLE CARRYING tire.

YOU ARE FIRED FROM YOUR JOB !! UNDERSTOOD ? We are in bussiness to make MAXIMUM profits !

Where are my golf clubs ? ""

What this statement has to do with any of the discussion above is beyond me. There are differences in construction between a passenger tire and a trailer tire. The main one being the sidewall construction. The LT tire is viewed as a viable alternative because it shares the same characteristcs...stronger sidewall. If an LT tire is used you need to derate it's load by 10%

Your statement of one being "as good" as the other and what a tire maker thinks is uninformed and just internet gibberish. They are different tires for different purposes.

If you want to know what a tire manufacturer actually says about trailer tires go here and click on "technical".

I worked for many.....For profit companies. I posted those those remarks because they are truthfull and told to the department heads on new products. The logic is correct.

Any company that publicly derates their product.......NEVER built it right & or safe to begin with. Period. They are just too greedy to recall it on their own.

I guess the "for profit" companies I have worked for have a different set of ethics that the ones you worked for. For ours the customer is #1 and the way we make more profits is to always think that way.

Again, your drivel has "no value added" to the topic at hand.

Your drivel sounds like a true self appointed judge , jury & .........

Your veiw is always correct.
Even if it is not the same as your customers. The customers are NOT always right.
Basic laws of any sucessfull company..........The company is supposed to know more about the product they produce than any customer. If not true.

FIRE 95 % of the staff !!
Replace them with people more competent than a customer.

Boy, you must be blessed for working with such upstanding companies. Cyclops is right!

Cut costs and cut quality. If the extra cost of complaints is less than the savings, cut some more. If you can ship jobs overseas, even better for the bottom line. The American worker expects too much - a living wage and benefits....hahahah. Chinamen only need a roof over their head and a bowl of rice.

The customer is never right. The Harvard MBA that runs the company is the only authority.

The reason the statements have value to the topic is because they speak directly to the Chinacrap the OP asked about.

What all this has to do about tires made in China, ST vs LT vs Passenger tires is STILL beyond me.

Yes, thankfully I am!

And by the way, I never said the customer is always right.

Aren't you the guy that goes 10+ years on your tires? Not much common sense in doing that.

I have only bought 15" LT tires, so if 14's aren't available I stand corrected.

First boat trailer was a 1968 and the oem USA tires lasted about 5 years. They were replaced at the first sign of sidewall cracking.

In the 1970's replaced the set with what the guy said was "Made by Goodyear". They lasted a whole year! When I took them off I saw they were Taiwan. Lesson learned - read the sidewalls before you buy them and don't trust the crook at the tire store. (I was a neophyte back then)

Third set was a USA Goodyear and it again lasted 5 years till the sidewalls cracked.

Fast forward and built the 5-car garage, plus the 3-car workshop. Now the tires get no sunlight unless the trailer is in the launch ramp parking lot. Still replace them when the sidewalls indicate, but now it takes 10+ years.

Our 2 summer vacations are short - only about 350 miles one way on an interstate. Never had a tire failure (or a flat for that matter), so I must not be doing things too wrong.
