Well, I now have the PH removed. What all prep work should I do to the exhaust housing while I'm at it? Id like to clean it up some and possibly paint. Mechanic said had a scored cyl...guess we are going to find out!

Clean up the gasket surfaces real good and check/change the thermostats.

Thanks boobie. Will do. I have the heads off and I don't see ANY scoring in any walls! Now what? There is quite a bit of play in the pistons tho. Would it be wise to go ahead and re-ring her since its apart this far? There is a small build-up of carbon but what is normal? Also, when taking the electrical loom off, I unplugged a 4-pin connector, and one of the pins was bent as to where it wasn't even going in the female side. That's probably why I couldn't get this $%&* thing to run! Here is the pin I'm talking about. Thanks guys.

After you re ring it there will probably be a good bit of slop. Its normal with these engines. move the pistons around and look at the rings. If they are intact you can probably just throw new gaskets on , bolt the heads back on and do a decarb once you get the electrical working again. Why did you take the PO off?

Re: My first PH removal on J90TLCOS

Well, I bought it off a guy that said " It just needs carbs cleaned"... I done everything I could think of and couldn't get it to run. I ended up taking it to a reputable mechanic and he said it wasn't worth rebuilding. I think he just wanted to sell me a 93 Evinrude for $3100. He said the #4 cyl was scored. I asked him what exactly he done, and he said they took out a spark plug and looked in with a small flashlight...? Does this sound legit? Shouldn't he have done a little more? He also said the comp was 90 in that cyl. Anyway, I couldn't justify putting that much $ into this boat when i haven't even splashed her yet. I have gutted her with a new vinyl floor and replaced transom so far. Now just need to get her running. I am not giving up until I feel what a 90 hp OB feels like

To late now but did he ever tell you what the compression was in the other cyl's ? Better find a different "mechanic ".

Well when I purchased it, I came up with readings in the 100# to 110# in all cyl's. But that was with a cheap H.F. comp gauge. So I thought all was good. I'm going to take just the PH back to this " mechanic" and have him show me the scoring. He's already ticked off because I didn't throw 3k at him. I figured in a few weeks I would stop by again with my "junk" motor there for sale.

Yep. Best thing you can do is learn to be your own mechanic.

Good idea. Take it back to this "mechanic" and have him show you. Then give us a report back on what he says.

Well, have an update. Took to another fellow, with the heads off, he showed me scoring in all cylinders! He said looks like ran lean quite a few times. Looks like she will be getting 4 new pistons and rings. Guess I will split the case and go from there. Need to check the crank to see if it/ bearings are ok. How to determine this? Thanks guys for all your input

Re: My first PH removal on J90TLCOS

Ok, upon further inspection, I found a crank "ring"broken. With that said, should I replace all of them, which seems practical to me. I am ordering new pistons and rings, along with a gasket kit. Do you think there is anything else I should include while I'm at it? It looks like there is more than one piston/ring combo available. Any ideas? To make a long story short, new pistons, rings and gaskets. Am I missing something? Thanks guys.

Have the block looked at by a machine shop to see if it needs to be rebored or if it will get by with just a hone job. If it needs to be rebored you will need oversized pistons and the size will depend on the bore.

By crank ring do you mean the split sleeves that hold the main bearings on the crank journal? Post some pictures of what your working on and more people will be able to help out.

P.S. You should replace the connecting rod bearings and bolts and the needle bearings for the wrist pins in the pistons. Check every bearing, it's no good to put a bunch of new parts in there only to have an old bearing fly apart on you down the road.

Cheers!

Re: My first PH removal on J90TLCOS

If you mean the seal ring on the crank....these rarely fail. Usually they are not replaced during an overhaul. I'd just replace the one broken one. They don't wear. If you are not overboring the block, why replace the pistons? You may just need 4 ringsets. It would be good to determine just why the cylinders scored in the first place. 1. 'd pull the carbs apart and check the bowls that feed the scored cylinders: visually inspect the main jets. You may find some restriction/debris in them. 2. Also, replace the rubber water diverters in the block. Make sure they go back in the correct orientation.

Re: My first PH removal on J90TLCOS

Thanks guys. Yea just to clear things up, I need to bore the block. The #3 cyl had a 1" chunk of ring missing. It done some minor damage. As far as rod bearings go, replace them all?

And yes, my pistons will be over-sized .030

As far as pics go, I got plenty, let me tell ya. What would you like to see?

Thanks guys for all your help. You're all like a bunch of PFD's in my book!

Yes, replace all the rod bearings. There are 4 in your motor. Take some pics of the part you are calling the "crank ring" and post that. Also take some picks of the center main bearings and crank journals if you can. Any pitting or scoring on the crank journals could mean it's not usable. Better to know that before spending money reboring and buying parts.

Thanks trendsetter! I have a few pics for ya. Hope the quality is ok. As you can see, one of the crank bearing/ sealing ring is missing. There is some small pitting, I'm not sure what is allowable.
