Re: my first starcraft 160 super sport

i finally got the motor on yesterday. i found that it was hard to steer so i disconnected steering and the motor was still pretty stiff to move. Anyone got any ideas? I'm figuring the bushings shot on the pivot pin.

Wow man. The boat look fantastic and you're keeping the price down as well.

It looks like a big dollar restore...

Well it's been a journey. With the exceptions of snaps and the wooden foot pads that I want to refinish before putting them back on, the boat is finished. I haven't taken her out yet 'cause I have to take a trip tomorrow to the DEP to get my boating certificate to be legal on the water. I'm gonna shoot for Thursday since I have a busy schedule tomorrow for my maiden voyage. here's a pic of the interior.

I still have to buy seat covers in grey since I had to use some seats I had already. I couldn't get them bright white so until next season when i buy new seats they'll have to do. I'm using grey to break up all the white in the boat. I had to rebuild the bases and wrap them in new vinyl so with seat covers nobody should know the difference.

Lookin good:D

I think you will be pretty happy with that 75hp Merc, should hit 35-40mph if your trimmed properly. Good luck with the splash!

The size was fine for all but 1. It was the posting them next to each other that was an issue. I fixed them.

Re: my first starcraft 160 super sport

Oh ok. Well i got my motor started for the first time in two years. It started fairly easy but it wouldn't run longer that 30 seconds. Then had to reprime and start right up. Also seems i'm getting air in the line from the tank so i'm gonna see if i can find the problem this afternoon starting with the pickup in the tank. Any suggestions welcome. I remember having this problem the last time i ran the motor a couple
years ago. I have a new float and needles and seats on order and should
be in today for installation

I went and bought a float and needles and seats and when i went to put them in i found a little piece of cardboard in the seat. Thought great this must be a blockage. Put back together and same thing. Took off the fuel pump and found a piece of the gasket missing...the piece i found earlier. Going back to shop in the morning hopefully with better luck that they have what i need so i can launch tomorrow morning.

Re: my first starcraft 160 super sport

i went this morning and got the diaphragm kit and about to put it in. A $5 fix but cost me $45 because in my mind I confused a float with a lawn mower and my outboard which had no problem with the float. So if any one needs a float kit for the outboard shown in this thread, p.m. me or I'll have one on the shelf for me. Well at least I'll have new needles and seats in the carbs and won't have that problem.

Re: my first starcraft 160 super sport

Its a good thing i tested the motor at home before i went to the water. I started the motor after fixing the fuel pump and the stator wires located right next to the fuel inlet were actually on fire when i hit the throttle from dry rotted coating all the way up to the stator so i have to buy a new stator. Another $200 plus $20 for the tool to pull the flywheel. Better find that kind of stuff out in my driveway rather than my motor catching on fire on the lake. You guys with the old motors and original wires in them please check to see if they are brittle. This could have been real ugly if i didn't catch this. Have fun and be safe!

Re: my first starcraft 160 super sport

Well I launched yesterday and ran good at top speed 38 with the motor trimmed in too far. Ran for a while and then gradually died. Lost spark after checking it today. Haven't a clue what happened. Maybe the switchbox croaked. Now that I got a taste I'm pi@&ed!

Did some testing on the ignition and found i did need a switchbox so i got a new one off ebay for $120 shipped and all seems good now. Will take it back out again tomorrow or wednesday to adjust carbs again and see what she got. Man they wanted 250 to 270 around here.

Oh and about the stator, I called the merc repair shop in this area and he said if i could cut back to where there were good wires and replace the wire and terminals I'd be good. So I did and all's well with the stator.
