Re: My humble request for admission to the Starmada: 1972 21' Chieftain OB

Luckily the steering isn't frozen up, so in the week that I had it, and was able to climb in it, I spent a lot of time at the helm, holding the wheel, going "Vroom, vroom!" :D
I just want to get the transom done and the motor going for this season, then rip out the deck and redo the cabin over the winter.
If the Tower of Power won't fire, I can always bolt up my 15hp Merc and putt it out to do some camping. :)

I get my stitches out in about a week, hopefully then I'll be able to get to some 1/2 duty work! (not in the office, on the boat!)
Hope you come across a good straight 6 to drop in your Chieftain!

wow---lots happened with your world since i last saw this thread. glad you're OK. (if anything untoward HAD happened, you know suspicion would immediately fall on those GLASSER people....). glad you have the boat and GF to give you incentive to take care of yourself and get back up to speed soon. wish it weren't a 5 hr drive from here to Lubbock.

little did you know that the board moniker would be so appropriate...sounds like your trip to the ER really was a "win"

Thanks barato2, I'm getting a little better every day.
The moniker is actually my first two initials and my last name, but I sure was an ER winner that day!
Really glad the effects of the stroke didn't stick!

just watch out for any interest in fiberglass boats that might indicate some residual brain damage from the TIAs :D

My 2 aluminum boats should keep the fiberglass itch away. Though I am going down to the TX coast this summer and will hopefully get to go out on one of the family's boats. They're 'glass, but they're saltwater boats and they have their place in that environment. Up here where the tiny lakes are made out of damming canyons full of boulders, I like my tin. :D
I'm happy to say that the resto on my Chieftain will be financed in part by the elimination of a bad habit. I'm 3 weeks, 2 days without so much as a puff of a cigarette, so something good has come out of this whole ordeal!
Seems like, in a weird way, the stroke made me smarter! Low bar I guess. ;)

Thanks! My mom's been an oncology nurse for 15 years, so she's pretty stoked. Plus she lost her brother in his mid 50s several years ago to lung cancer.
Last pack I bought (over 3 weeks ago!) was $5.99, and they're pretty cheap here! My brother lives in Manhattan and they're $11-13 each there!
At a pack a day, I've got $180 a month to put towards the Chieftain! I should have quit a decade ago, but I was young and invincible then. ;)

good plan! i remember that young and invincible stuff.....used to ride my 750 Interceptor in shorts. fortunately learned without leaving too much skin on pavement.

i was sort of loooking at the atlas recently wondering where you take a big 'un like that near Lubbock....looks pretty dry there. the obvious answer is ANOTHER STARCRAFT in a smaller size......

My dad is 63 and still has a Softtail Harley but I like having bumpers on my vehicles!

I have another tinny, albeit not a Starcraft. But it easily handles all of the lakes around here!
While the lakes aren't very big, they're deep enough for the Chieftain, no problem!

Boat is still just sitting, since I've got another month and a bit until the sternum is healed and I can pick up more than 10lbs.

But I did get to go out fishing with my dad and some of his friends and a guide on a big tri-toon (still aluminum!) this last Sunday... then Monday I went back to work. :( Oh well, gotta do something during the day... and I've got an assistant for the next month and a half, so I won't be lifting anything.

Happy to say that I'm quit 7 weeks today! Still want one just about every waking moment, but I'm hoping that will subside. In the interest of never having my chest opened up again I have stayed away from them.

I have had 3 interested parties leave numbers at my house inquiring about buying the boat.
I'm not calling any of them back! :D

This boat will have a new transom and a running motor of some sort by this summer!
Over the fall/winter I'll pull the decking and other rotten wood and get to working on the other details.

Time to take the phone off the hook, buddy. They know a good thing. :D

Most happy you are getting healed and still plan on finishing the Chief. Good therapy, ER.

Thanks, GA! I have figured out a way to get myself onboard without stressing anything to badly, so I can at least turn the wheel and go "vroom!" :D
I think it would take about 10 grand to get this boat off of me right now! NOT FOR SALE!!! LOL
I don't even want to think about even locating a hull like this within 500 miles of me anytime soon.

Glad to hear you're up and about. This is quite the thread! Congrats on the no smoking. I keep trying to get my friend to stop, but he refuses to listen.

Thanks! It's not quite the direction I originally envisioned the thread going, but life throws your some curves, eh?
I tell you, it's been about 7 weeks and not an hour goes by where I don't have at least a couple strong cravings. But I've held solid. I don't want to go through this again!

Thanks Glen. I'm trying to not be to big of a pain, as many of my friends smoke (musicians...) as does my dad and several family members... But I'm pretty steadfast in my conviction to be through with them. Only cheated once in the last 7 weeks. I think that's pretty good.
Hopefully just about another month or so and I'll be able to get the transom replaced and see if I can fire up the old Merc!

Re: My humble request for admission to the Starmada: 1972 21' Chieftain OB

you mentioned the addtl $ you'll have for boats due to no $ on butts. that's just the tip of the iceberg. you could get a decent Hattteras or Grady-white in the 30ish foot range for what a sternum splittin goes for these days...........even with good med insurance, i'll bet your out of pocket on that party was more than you have in the tin.

JD, i had a friend like that. til last week. he did quit smoking, after one last blaze of glory. at the crematorium...........:(

Re: My humble request for admission to the Starmada: 1972 21' Chieftain OB

My mom was an oncology nurse before she got into teaching nursing and she lost her brother in his mid 50s a few years ago to lung cancer so I knew it had to stop. I guess I just needed a more personal reason?
I've got some family help with my deductibles (which, of course, aren't adding up to what the little card my insurance company gives me) so I'm very fortunate there.
I did notice that the hospital and a couple doctors have given a $203,000 "insurance discount" to the bills that my insurance company are paying.
Glad I'm not uninsured! Though I wonder if I'll be able to ever change insurance plans after my recent procedure?
It all just seems very wrong to me.
Hope this is the end of it...
On a happier note, for what I smoked before, I'm about 1/3 of the way from saving what I put in the Chieftain, including gas to get her! And it's only been about 2 months!

Hey, ER. This wasn't included in your plan to bring the Chief back to life but keeping you kicking is a big part of finishing the Chief. All chatter now counts as planning and staring at her is officially classified as progress. It's in the Starmada by-laws somewhere. So you are making great progress. :D Climbing inside and making varooom sounds is ....er.... daydreaming. :p And therapeutic too.
