All those consumed fuel tanks could double as fat sacs to really ramp up the wake, kind of like an auto ballast system

You all seem to be ignoring an important factor: hull deadrise.

And altitude. And temperature. And humidity. And the prop. And the condition of the hull. And any power lost to motor age. And the level of tune the motor is in. And the total weight of all passengers and cargo. And wind direction. And drag inducing accessories like a bimini. And .............

If the 3.0 won't do the job for your boat, then don't get it, but telling another boater his setup is no good is on par with the guy who backs up crooked and then preps his boat on the ramp. On a busy weekend.

I cant believe this thread. The guy stated he loves his 3.0. Thats awsome. It feels great to love your boat. I am glad your boat performs that well. Enjoy the summer and memories you will have from enjoying the water.

Your post is worthless without pics. :)

Google image search for 'drag inducing bikini' isn't nearly as humorous as I was hoping (though it wasn't entirely disappointing either). ;)

I love my 3.0L too.... except its a V6 flipped sideways (200HP Optimax):D:D

It'll go 50+ as well on my 18' 10" deckboat

I have a 70hp Johnson and a 16' open bow rider and the Johnny gets me up to plane in a big hurry and tops out at 42mph!(That's by myself and 3 gallons of fuel, Bimini down)
My boat weighs in at 750lbs!
I enjoy my little 3 banger!
To OP enjoy your boat and don't let the haters bring you down.
Power to weight ratio also has a big part in your performance!
750lbs./70hp=10.71 lbs per horse..

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

I picked up a 1987 Sylvan with a Yamaha L-4 3.0 last winter (Merc engine) and I have been happy with it. I don't tow and I am not worried about top speed - I am a sightseer and a tourist on the water. At 1400-1600 RPM the GPS says 5 to 7 KPH, hardly leaves a ripple for a wake, purrs along very quietly and it took nearly 4 hours of cruising for the fuel gauge to start bouncing off the FULL peg (on a 24 gallon tank). Just perfect for me. :D

That's me too. The "putt putt " club. I don't care if I had a sig boat. I would still just cruise along. In my younger days , I was all about speed. Don't know what happened. Now it is beer, snacks, relaxing and sight seeing.

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

We've got an 18' i/o bowrider with a 3.0L Merc as well. We're a young family with 2 small kids and have no issues with lack of power.. No slalom skiing or wakeboarding, just pulling a tube or a hotdog for the kids. We may outgrow the boat in size & power in a few years, but the price on a low hour 18' with the 4cyl was fantastic. :)

We never really run over 25mph unless it's for a short blast, the 30 gallon tank lasts multiple days on the water, then again we generally launch, find a place to beach it, hang there for the day so the kids can play, then go for a short boat ride before heading back to the ramp.

I figure if we were blasting around at 35mph+ all day and pulling skiers and wakeboarders this thing would probably get worse gas mileage than a 4.3 doing the same thing.

Re: My little 3.0L is blowing my mind...

Anyone ever read or know anything about the efficiency calc for an engine feul consumption?

I read somewhere that its about 1 gall per hour for every 10 hp.. example..200HP engine = 20 gall per hour at full throttle...

Anyone else know or hear of this and is this a good rule of thumb??

Thanks

its a basic rule of thumb that is valid in most cases

What about resale? I'm pretty sure a 4.3 will be more attractive than a 3.0 at resale time. NADA gives you a nice bump in price for having a bigger engine with a n 18' bowrider. As far as gas mileage, been out 2x's and pulled kneeboarders and tubers for two hours each time. I burned a half tank total with my 4.3l merc. The new boat is better than my 93' 3.0l merc 18' I had for last couple of years on gas.

I actually was looking for a 3.0L for that very reason, well that and I no longer feel the need for speed. The resale value already took a hit, but it didn't hit me. The boat was already 12 years old when I bought it, it's value had already dropped due to it's age so it's not going to make too much difference in 5 years or so when/if I sell it as a 17+ year old boat.
