Re: My new/old 1971 SS

This was going to be my moment of triumph. I've been working on the outboard hood and had it ready to prime and paint. But..... sometimes you do stupid things. Put one coat of Rustoleum primer and the can ran out, so I used another can of Rustoleum, but didn't pay attention to the fact that the first can was oil based and the second was water based. Sooooo, spent about two hours today getting it stripped again. Now I have another problem. the top of the hood is showing some strands of fiberglass. Can anyone tell me if I can just put a coat of poly resin on it, sand, and then paint? If not does anyone have any ideas? On the bright side I got the motor stripped today. There were three coats of paint on it, and I think the last one was just house paint. Anyhow here are a couple of pics of what the hood looked like before the fiasco.

I have another question, I have an early 70s Evinrude, what would be the best paint to repaint it with? Also do I need to use self-etching primer on it before painting?

You'll probably have to make the Oh Carp official & post a pix of the fiberglass showing through, sorry about that

All bare aluminum needs to be primed with SE primer. Also You might want to use the IMG tag from Photobucket to post your pics. Makes it a lot nicer for everyone to see your pics directly here in your thread.

Another question. I know I have read in several threads about people using hardener in their paints. Where can you get it and will it work with any paint or is it paint specific? I plan on using Ruston on my hull. Also can the paint be sprayed with hardener in it?

Valspar hardner it the one most of us use, and I think Tractor supply is where the guys are buying it in the US. Check with any paint store they can probably order it for you.

You can use the Valspar Tractor Paint too! It's acrylic Enamel Oil Based just like Rustoleum. I used it with the hardener on my boat and it turned out great.

Jeez this sucks!!!! For the last month it has been nice from Monday through Friday and then crappy cold and raining on the weekends. So being a teacher and having spring break this week I thought "Whoo hoo I have 9 days to work on the boat. So what happens? Been raining and cold since Friday, might be decent tomorrow and Tuesday and then Thunderstorms Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I guess the boat gods are mad at me. :(

I would have loved to do an SS but couldn't find one at the time. I didn't think a drawer would fit in the dash area. Keep it up man. She'll be a beautiful boat when you're done.

Thanks, I hope to make it a boat to be proud of. I did manage to get the dash boards cut out and a first coat of spar varnish on them. The better half took pity on me and let me varnish on the island in the kitchen. My folks had a 16 ss that had a factory glove box. Mine was a home made drawer put in by one of the POs. I'm replacing the dashes with oak.

We finally had a nice day while I was off. Got to work on the boat all day, finally feels like I am making some progress. Here are some before and after pics of the trailer.

And the 50 hp outboard hood. The outboard is actually and Evinrude, but there is no identification plate and my kicker motor is a Johnson and my wife's maiden name is Johnson so I am repainting it as a Johnson. This is the first two coats of white. Not bad, but a couple of little flying critters decided they needed to commit suicide so will need to do a little sanding and another couple of coats of paint. Already have the Johnson decals.

Also managed to get more paint stripped off of the hull today. Bought a can of Aircraft Remover. It works really well. It is taking paint off that Citristrip was having problems with.

Re: My new/old 1971 SS

Made some progress the last couple of days. I was going to buy a new winch. Instead I decided to take the old one apart, clean it up and paint it. It also needed a new crank handle as the old plastic one was mostly broken off and was hard on the hand when you cranked it. I used a piece of a tree branch we had cut down and saved as kindling. Drilled a hole through the center, cut it in half on the band saw, and then glued it on the handle. Makes for a unique crank handle anyway. Also bought a new trailer jack and installed it.
