Sorry but I will be picking this one up Thursday. I talked to the seller for almost 20 minutes. I am trying to get him to join the Starmada and post his build.

Re: My new/old 1971 SS

Thanks for the heads-up. I contacted the seller as I have a friend in Minneapolis who would have picked it up for me, but the seller says someone is supposed to be picking it up from him on Thursday. If it falls through he is going to let me know. I grew up in Wisconsin and Minnesota and graduated from Coon Rapids High School.

Not a problem, I figured it wouldn't last long. I still have a few months before I will be ready to put the windshield back on and maybe another one will turn up. I'm glad that someone from on here got it.

I'll tell you what you could do to make up for being quicker than me.:) I noticed that your SS has the sliding doors at the stern. I want to build doors for my boat and have found some aluminum sheeting at Lowes that looks a lot like the original, but don't have the dimensions for the doors. Would you mind sending me the dimensions to give me a start on fabricating some?

Here's what the decking looked like after I pulled it out. The foam I found behind the side panels. The console pic is to show the jury rigged wooden drawer slides. Lastly the ribs and stringers after cleaning.

For sure I could do that. I have not put them back together yet so I can get detailed pictures also.

I have been looking for a windshield for mine and there was another one on CL. They are selling the consoles also for a 76'. I think that it may still be on CL.

Hi again...been looking at your first set of pictures...looks like someone put aluminum channel on both consoles where you walk through....to slide a divider separating the bow area from the rest of the boat?
What is on top of the gunnels behind the channel for the bikini top (it is in your 2nd picture far right side) :D
Is that a maintenance free battery at the stern?....I've heard they are not recommended for the older outboards...don't know about the newer ones... people claim sometimes when you charge up the maintenance free batteries ...they may put out too high a voltage
for some of the electronics...check with CDI Electronics about their power packs and using maintenance free batteries....:D

There was aluminum channel there. I figure it was there for the reason you suggested. My folks had a 74 supersport, theirs had snaps down each side and a vinyl/canvas piece that, that matched the top, which snapped to close it. That is what I want to do with mine. I'm not sure what the piece you asked me about was meant for. It penetrated the gunwale and had a pulley wHeel. I still have it so will take a picture and post it. My son and I have conjectured that it could have had something to do with and anchor or some sort of down rigger.

Re: My new/old 1971 SS

This is probably going to make me look like an idiot, but I was wondering what the name (if there is one) of the electrical wiring that goes from the battery into the motor is called. I know the wiring in the motor is called the wiring harness, haven't been able to find anything on the other wiring. Mine is not in the best of shape and I want to replace it. Also does anyone know of any parts store that has the wiring harness itself for a 50 hp evinrude. I have found back to 74, but not for a 71.

Re: My new/old 1971 SS

I'm still trying to figure out what year evinrude I have. It is a fifty horse and is not electric shift so figure it must be a 71 or 72, but the plate with the serial number is gone. I found these numbers on the block - 322556. 0 or D. a space and what looks like a one. I know some have said to look for the freeze plug, but I'm not sure where it is on this engine and I haven't been able to locate one visually. Any help would really be appreciated.

It's newer than that. It's gotta be '73 or newer. Try to find a model number as opposed to a serial. My '73 was real obvious.... it was like 73ESL85 or something.

Re: My new/old 1971 SS

I'll keep looking, if anyone can give me an idea of where it might be on a 50 horse that would be great. It's been a long time since I posted, so glad to be back and will post some pics soon, although nothing earthshaking done yet.

Correct. They are pretty much identical except for paint and cowling decoration.

Re: My new/old 1971 SS

I saw Yooperangler's post with the picture of the plug beside the starter. Got excited about that thinking mine would be the same, but the 50 horse doesn't have that hole. :( EZ it looks like the plate is on the mounting bracket, but it was painted over and I have tried removing the paint, but no writing shows up underneath. Don't know if the po sanded it down or what.

As I understand it, prior to 74 they didn't have the center windshield.

My 72 SS has a center windshield. I can't imagine it was an option as my boat is bare bones in every other respect.

Stephenatx, any words of wisdom for removing consoles and front seating? Any problems you ran into? I'm redecking my SS this winter.
