Re: My new Starcraft Project

So I finally saved up some cash and bought some parts! We replaced the water pump and found that it really wasn't too bad. One of the fins were cut, but I think that was a result of the overheat, not the cause. My final conclusion, not that I know anything, was the exhaust riser was rusted shut, or clogged by the old manifold. Water couldn't drain properly which built up pressure and heat which obliterated the shudder valve, damaged the water pump, and melted the plastic guide tube for the pump. I replaced the riser, pump, and shudder valve, and gear oil. There was some streaks of water in the outdrive oil, but I'm thinking the melted guide tube is the cause. We ran the motor and water seemed to be pumping normally again, whew! So now all that's left is to take her out for a sea trial so we know for sure. After that I'm planning on checking the gear oil.

Here is the motor running after all that:

We also replaced the controls. There use to be the single lever, with a button. I HATED it! It was almost impossible to know when you were in neutral. I'm sure it worked better 40 years ago, but we had enough. We picked up dual lever controls at a yard sale for next to nothing! They're in great shape. They're not side mount, so it took some modifications to make them work. These will work better for me cause I always drive standing and the other lever was a bit too low. It might not look pretty, but they work great! There will be a stainless cover to neaten everything up and to hide the cables and hole.

Wow JCup, excellent work... did you machine up the control pedestal yourself? Taking an interest in this resto as I'm tempted to do something similar and all the SC restos are a big inspriation for us downunder... we LOVE tinnies!

Hey jcup! I was just thinking about harassing you to see how you were coming on that motor. Glad you got her up a running again!

Man I love those controls! (I actually picked up that identical set for my rig)

Great job man!:D

Thanks! The pedestal is custom and I would love to say that I made it, but my girlfriends stepfather is that mastermind behind that. It took some tinkering, but I think it turned out great. We were actually able to use the clips for the throttle cables from the old setup which was huge because these cables were a bit to long at the ends and the clips built into the base wouldn't work.

I checked out your restore on Friday and saw how far you've gotten in the last couple weeks and figured I get up off my butt and stop being lazy!! You're gonna love those controls, they might be my favorite upgrade so far!

Re: My new Starcraft Project

Are those vintage controls or new ones that look older?

Either way they look great and I agree that standing while underway is required, to see where you are headed it makes things easier(condensation on the windshield, etc).

Glad to hear you're back working on the rig, have you been fishing too?

They're vintage, just in really good condition. I really haven't done much fishing at all. I guess I'm just waiting for the boat to be ready!

Yeah man, but I want to be on the water with no major issues! I'm still waiting for a successful trip from beginning to end!

Re: My new Starcraft Project

Well, I?m happy to report that we had our first successful trip?WOOHOO!! The motor ran great and stayed cool, the new controls were a gigantic upgrade and worked flawlessly. We were greeted at the ramp by a coast guard officer who was doing free safety checks and we passed with flying colors. The bay was really really rough. The wind was blowing about 15-20mph steady with the occasional 25-30mph gusts. The ride out was fairly slow, we traveled about 12 miles from the ramp chugging along at about 14mph. Sorry I don?t have any videos while driving, there was no way that was gonna happen, everyone was holding on with both hands! I did get some video while we were fishing, sorry for the excessive wind noise, you might want to mute your speakers.

Here is the finishing throttle box - I think it turned out great!

Glad to see you getting her out in some weather jcup, looks a lot like some great lakes waves there. How far out are you in those videos?

Thanks! No, she is far from complete. I am just at a point now where I can enjoy the boat while restoring it. It was a great day, minus the rough waters and no fish, but she ran great so it didn't even matter!

Thanks man! In the words of me "it's about time!"

We were about 5-6 miles out, the water is only about 10-13 feet deep where we were drifting. It was a great test for boat, she plowed through it with no issues. Felt very safe. Didn't catch anything, we probably fished for about 45 minutes when a passenger started feeling sick and we headed back.

Thanks! It's a great feeling when you're not towed, or limping back to the boat ramp EVERY trip!

When I first saw the new controls I was a bit worried about how they looked set up on the rail. But you sure did a fine job of finishing up the installation. Congrats.

Sweet setup on that shifter.

Congrats on the successful voyage. It's good to know that she can handle that kind of water.
