Re: Need Advice on Valve Cover Gasket Please

Now that I have to take valve cover off again to get to exhaust elbow will I be able to use the gasket (oem) and slap some permatex under it?

I wouldn't use the stuff that is meant for creating gaskets (black/blue/gold) But you could and should use the gasket sealer that I linked to.

Ok...will get some of that. So, I will use that under all the gaskets that I put on from now on, use this instead of gaskets? I am also fixing to have to pull the lower unit to do an impeller change. Can I use that on the bell housing as well?

You don't need any sealer on the drive - use new factory gaskets and orings

Ok..so here is a thought....I got a big 32 gallon trash can and filled it to the cavitation plate with water instead of using muffs. After reading another post I saw that the water should be over the cavitation plate. So, this brings up the question, Should the water be over cavitation plate? Using only muffs water is going into water intake so shouldn't up to cavitation plate be sufficient? Nonetheless, if it is supposed to be over cavitation plate then I have found the culprit in the overheating problem.

Also, since I have doing the impeller, would it be a wise idea to replace water pump as well?

In a static situation like that the impeller housing should be completely immersed. As far as the replacing the housing goes it would be a good idea.

Re: Need Advice on Valve Cover Gasket Please

Funny thing is I did use permatex on exhaust elbow with gasket. I used it on thermostat as well and that hasn't leaked at all. I tried using it on valve cover to make my own gasket but i guess I didn't get enough because it didn't seal. So I went back to oem gasket. Now that I have to take valve cover off again to get to exhaust elbow will I be able to use the gasket (oem) and slap some permatex under it?

You should be able to reuse the gasket, as it is probably not set up, since it's about new. Just ad a dab of form-a-gasket onto the surface. Not much, just a light coating to help it reseal.

Personally, I use "cork composition" re-usable gaskets (Felpro) and Permatex hi-tac and glue the gasket to the valve cover only and let it set up. Then when you put onto head, it's won't move about and potentially cause a leak. Removal is easy because the gasket comes off with the valve cover and can be scraped off on the work bench (a tad of heat helps alot). not getting crap into the head.

That'll work, if you don't put the prop in gear and push the water out with the prop. Water will come out the transom vents dumping on the ground and the water in the tank will heat up. Just keep a hose running in the tank to replenish water level and keep the water cool. I would fill till overflowing and keep it as full as possible.

Ok...

So, from what I have read:
1. replace impeller and bell housing gasket and o-rings. No sealant on these.
2. replace thermostat and gasket by putting gasket sealant on thermostat housing and then gasket will stick to housing and make a seal. Tighten by torquing to spec.
3. remove valve cover to expose exhaust elbow bolts.
4. replace exhaust elbow gasket by putting aviation form a gasket sealant(permatex) on exhaust elbow and put gasket onto this to help it stick and then install on exhaust. Tighten bolts by torquing to spec.
5. put valve cover back and torque to spec on bolts.
6. put muffs on and check for leaks and overheating.

Would that be the best plan of action? If I didn't get the gasket set up correct please correct me.

Thanks

And that just makes me know I must have ruined the impeller because I didn't see any water coming out of the transom vents dumping water like when I put the muffs on. So now I will use muffs from now on. $ on trash can down the drain along with the $ to fix these.

Thanks

Surface of cylinder block or the valve cover?

I have put a dab in corners of valve cover with permatex form a gasket(red) to keep the gasket intact.

Re: Need Advice on Valve Cover Gasket Please

I have read this entire thread and I'm still confused.

If you have a leak between the elbow and the manifold, that has nothing to do with your oil problem. Even if it overheated, it wouldn't cause an oil leak.

If you do replace the gasket between the elbow and the manifold, don't use any sealer at all. Be sure both surfaces are clean and shiny - and make sure the elbow and manifold are in good condition of course. They may even need to be replaced,

The gasket you will want to use for that application is the OEM Quicksilver grey graphite type of gasket - NOT the green paper one you will sometimes see. Those are worthless.
