Need help...I hit a huge rock...

Hello all,

I took my 1969 Fishmaster and 1956 Johnson javelin fishing this weekend with my dad. We went to a lake we have never fished with a boat.

Everything went great Friday and Saturday the old motor was running PERFECT.

We decided to fish yesterday morning for a few hours before ending our fishing/camping weekend.

The lake is divided in 2 parts by a damn with a small tunnel to pass through... well as i was about to enter the canal i swung around one point a little to far and the next thing i know BAM the sound of the motor and prop hitting a rock...this lasted for about 5 seconds before i could cut the motor off via the choke...

After getting the motor up and free and using the trolling motor to navigate I looked at the motor and it seemed fine a few gouges on the prop but nothing bent or major..

I put the motor back down and started her right up!! but when i hit the gas the prop BARELY turned almost none at all and we were dead in the water...

So we tried to use the trolling motor to fish but the 25 mph+ winds were not helping...I did start the motor a couple of times bc it did help when trying to get back to the boat ramp...but it did little if nothing...

With the boat out of the water and in gear i can turn the prop and it turns the motor over but when running it doesnt spin like it should...

So what likely happened and what do i need to do to fix it? instructions on how to fix it??

Sorry for the long read I figured id type a story versus saying "my prop hit a rock and now it wont turn"

Thanks in advance for your help! :(

EDIT: also the motor is now leaking black grease all around the LU

You have most likely broken the shear pin on the propeller. Take the propeller off and look at the small rod that binds the propeller to the propeller shaft. It is an inexpensive part and easy to replace. When you buy them, get several to keep on the boat.

What is the model number of your motor?

Thanks. I made an edit about it leaking black greas/oil form all around the bolts on the LU....

If it isn't the shear pin, you probably tore the rubber hub loose in the prop. Commonly called "spun the hub".
That is the serial number. No matter, the 30 was only made in 1956, so you don't have many choices.

I don't know about the grease issue. Got a picture of that?

ALSO...when i put it in gear it used to make a "clank" and engage and you had to "pull" it in gear...now it is free moving and there isn't any "engagement" you don't hear it or feel it...like i used to...

The OEM reproduction manuals that are available are sold here at iboats if you want to contact them.

Your motor should be a model RD-18. The OEM reproduction manuals that are available are sold here at iboats if you want to contact them.
thanks any advise on the putting in gear or oil leaking??

First, take the prop off. It should have a cotter pin in the nose that you remove, then turn the nose cone counter-clockwise to uncover the shear pin. Remove the shear pin and slide the prop off. Let us know if the shear pin is in one piece.

Look on the main page, top right, and select Johnson Manuals for your service manual.

thanks... what about the leaking though? do we need to take off the lu and put a gasket on it or something??

Once you determine if the prop is spinning on the shaft or not, you can check to see if the gears are working. then you will want to know where the oil is coming from. The gear oil should not be black. That is a sign that it has not been changed regularly and that the oil is worn out.

The black oil usually found around a two stroke motor is the unburned oil from the engine that drains down after running and it is normal.

First things first: Do the prop and drive pin check first. If the pin's broken (very likely), replacing it will probably solve your problem. Then, describe this "leak" to us. Where is it coming from, exactly. It may be something, or it may be nothing to worry about.

I tapped a rock with my 58 35 hp, and it broke that pin. Didn't even hurt the prop. I had a spare on hand, replaced it and went back to fishing. I'm hopeful that you'll be able to do the same.

Ok, i will have my pops check that asap. but i can tell you when in gear i can spin the prop and turn the motor over like it is functioning properly.. but when the motor is running and im in the water the prop is barely turning...so i am confused... why when on land and in gear can i spin the prop with my foot and it gets lots of resistance and the motor turn over? its weird...

also i replaced the LU oil less than a month ago...so i know its not old...

the leak is coming out form around almost EVERY bolt in the LU...yes almost every one of them has black oil seeping from them and a good amount to...

the LU oil was changed less than 1 month ago so i dont understand why it is black...

Re: Need help...I hit a huge rock...

Which bolts is the oil coming from? The ones above the anti-cavitation plate (the horizontal fin above the prop)? Or from lower on the gearcase? Black oil is usually oil and fuel residue from the exhaust housing. It smells a little like gasoline. Lower unit oil stinks with a smell all its own.

You've got to diagnose this logically. First, we have to see about the prop. Then we can look at your oil.

What you say about the prop sounds like a spun hub, rather than a broken drive pin. Not unusual with a rock strike. Given slow movement, it will hold, but when it tries to spin fast, it slips. You won't know until you get the prop off. If the pin's intact, the rubber hub is probably slipping under load.

If i recall correctly the oil was coming out under the cavitation plate... almost all of the bolts were leaking...

i will let you know about the prop as soon as i can get my dad to pull it off..

also what is the rubber part called and where can i get one if that is the problem? thank you so much!!
