Thanks Wood and Kent ....... I had to go out and learn from the guy I bought the parts from so I thought that I would try and pass it on.

In the post about attaching the shifter cable I did leave out that the barrel on the cable fits into a slot under the hold down bracket so I thought that I would add it here:

2 moro I am going to sand the entire hull and hopefully get it in primer. I had another project that came up and set me back a couple of days but I am ready to sand in the morning.

Is this the primer that I should use and do I add hardner to the primer or just the paint? I am going to use the roll and roll method.

So much for sanding the hull today. Mother Nature decided it wouldn't be a good day for sanding so she just opened the sky and is just dumping rain on us. Don't know if you can tell from the photo but it is pouring down rain here.

Spent today looking for rustolem primer .... went to every Home Depot and Lowes in a 30 mile radius and nobody has it. I went to Rustolem website and looked up the primer and clicked on the find a retailer near you button and all the Lowes and Home Depot stores that I had been to showed up. Even tried the Walmart and Autozone stores that were listed on the web site and nothing. I guess I am going to have to order it online. Found the Valspar hardner at Tractor Sales so it wasn't a complete waste of time ..... LOL

Finally, UPS brought the paint, the rain stopped, and I found a little time in this crazy hectic world that I call my life to get back to the boat.

Finished sanding the hull:

I was able to put one coat of primer on:

I thought my prep work was pretty good but I sure had a reality check when that wet primer showed a few areas that need a little more attention. So, guess who is going to be doing more sanding .... LOL.

In reality, that's one of the purposes of primer...to show any imperfections that will be there in the final coat. I had lots of those on mine. Just remember this...when it's in the water YOU will be the only one that knows those imperfections are there. I realize now I spent WAY to much time on getting every little spot smooth. It is not a show boat so...... fix what you think needs fixin and get on with it. Weird about the primer, My Lowe's had gallons of it. Did you put hardener in the primer?? You do Not have to do that.

Yeah definitely don't worry about the bottom too much. My paint is failing horribly and falling off the bottom in sheets. Guess what, you don't really see it that much.

Yeah ..... I guess you guys are right. I am going to hit a few spots and then it is what it is. A 50 yr old hull should have some battle scars.

Wood ... that is funny 'cause I hit every Lowes and Home Depot in a thirty mile radius and couldn't even find a quart. And no, I did not add hardner to the primer.

EZ .... that's terrible that your paint is coming off like that. Have you figured out why? I hope mine stays on for at least 50 more years so I don't have to do this again .... LOL

I am looking to order some wire and need advise on what size I should get for the hot and ground off the battery to the fuse panel. I have 16 ga for the lights and horn. Any thoughts?

Cuz I didn't prime. I was told if the existing paint was in good physical condition then just a thorough sanding/scuffing would do. FAIL.

Wow .... that sucks EZ sorry to hear that. I sure hope mine holds up. I tried to fill in and smooth out some of the bad spots on the hull and ended up doing what I said I wasn't going to do and that was a lot of sanding. I used that 3m Premium Filler to fill in what started out as a few spots and ended up the entire keel. Now in the morning I will wipe it down with acetone and prime it again. Don't know how long I have to wait to wet sand but I think I will leave it overnight and then wet sand and then finally paint.

This is the filler I used:

Put two coats of primer on the boat and I am ready to wet sand in the morning and then get started on the paint. I am going to use the roll and tip method with the paint and hardner from Woodonglass page 10 of the "Flamingo" thread.

I just am not sure how long to wait between coats and do I have to wet sand between coats?
Is the hardner added to all coats or just the final coat?

Anybody???

Hardener in ALL finish coats, not the primer. I wet sanded first finish coat with 220 and all others with 320 or a Scotch Brite pad. I'd recommend the Roll n' Roll method. Roll out about a 4 sq ft section. Then go back over it with a roller that has almost all the paint squeezed out of it. Very light rolling. Remember more light coats better than few heavy coats. LISTEN to the roller. If you are getting a Sticky Tacky sound you are rolling too long.

Thanks Wood ..... how long after each coat did you wait before sanding? What kind of Scotch Brite pad did you use? Did you wet sand the primer before the first finish coat?

Never mind ..... I just went back and read page 10 again and it answered all of my questions ......LOL.

Ok ... first coat finished with the Roll 'n Roll method and Woodonglass page 10 mixture. Will definatly need one or two more coats .... I kept it thin. I'll get more photos later.
