Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Just finished coat #2 and it does have a shine to it. I am not happy with all the little bumps and lumps along the keel and other places. I am not as good of a sander as I thought. I don't know how Woodonglass and opps! do it. But, there are 6 layers of glass on that keel that were put on by a rookie so I guess it is going to wave at you a little. I know one thing, this project has taught me that I am NEVER going to be an autobody person .... LOL. Everyone that has looked at the hull says that it looks great .... I guess I am just being picky.

Thanks Wood ....... Just finished the third and I think the final coat. It looks like it is covered pretty good but I will wait till it is dry to see if it needs another coat. How long till it is totally cured and ready to flip over?

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I think I will wait till Saturday when I can get some help flipping it over. I sure would hate to have the boat stick to the bunks. I need to find the paints at the art store to tint for the cap. I would like to paint it that blue color that the old '57 chevy was painted but not sure the name of the color. Kind of the color of Mark42 Niagara.

I used rustoleums Blue and white and mixed tablespoons and teaspoons till I got the color I wanted then increased the volume. Robin Egg blue or sky blue like some of the 57 Chevys. I think you want the darker blue right???

Well, I got pretty darn close to that on My Flamingo. A couple more tablespoons of blue and It would be almost a perfect match.

Did you mix a dark blue with white to get your color?

I used Rustoleum Royal blue. That 57 Chevy color will probably need a tablespoon of green in it too! Looks to be a shade on the Turquoise side to me. Here's how I'd start Tablespoon of White Tablespoon of blue Teaspoon of Green. Tblspn of Mineral Spirits. Mix well and compare the color. Experiment and you'll get real close. I bought some cheap measuring spoons and cups at the Dollar store so my wife stayed happy. Used a cheap artist brush dipped in Mineral Spirits to clean the spoons to make sure my measurements were accurate. Make sure and Write down your measurements so that when you get it the way you want it you'll have the formula to expand on. If/When you do it, make sure and publish it so we can all have the knowledge.;)

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Thanks for the help Wood ... I will have to try mixing until I get close to that color.

That's it .... the hull is done. Fourth coat put on today. Sunday I will flip it back over and start on the sole.
DSCF2088.JPG

Ok ... I followed the formula on Woodonglass Flamingo page 10 and I used half a quart of paint for each coat on the hull and had very little waste. When I flip it I will be working on the cap to prep for paint. When it comes time to paint the cap I know I won't use as much paint per coat so how do I adjust the amount of paint to hardner/thinner ratio for the smaller amount? I only want to mix up enough paint for each coat.

She looks brand New!!!! As for the hardener. 1 oz is 2 tablespoons. 1/2 quart is 2 cups. So 1 tablespoon of hardener per cup of paint. Works for Me!!!!

So, you just divide it in half for less and double it I assume for more. That was easy ... LOL

Hey Jon Sob,

The paint job looks great. The hull looks great too. So when it's in the water all the fish will see all the great work you did. LOL

Thanks Kent ... I think it came out ok for a rookie. I can't wait to turn it over and get started on the sole. How are things going over your way?

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I am looking ahead to installing the sole. There was a rotted sheet of ply bolted to the stringers and not attached to the hull when I bought the boat and there was no area for a bilge pump. I intend to attach the sole to the stringers and the hull so that it is all closed in. I think it would be nice to be able to turn on a pump if water is starting to build in the boat. I am planning to install a pump and I have made a crude drawing of what I want to do so as to get some of your comments. I have metal stringers that are bolted thru the transom so I would have to cut the center stringer to be able to do this. I would bolt it to the bilge box instead of the transom. The box would be tabbed to the transom and the hull with 1708. The two stringers on either side of the boat would be bolted thru the transom as they were before.

Any thoughts?
