Went to tractor supply and picked up the Valspar paint for my cap. I thought that since it was Valspar, and Lowes sells Valspar, I would take it to Lowes and have them tint it. They were more then happy to tint it for me and free of charge. I had picked a color called Biscayne Blue from their computer and they went ahead and added the tint, put it in the shaker and opened the lid and there was my new color ........ Lavender. All the guy could say was .... Oops! I remembered that Woodonglass told me to mix a dark blue and medium green so I asked the guy if he would try mixing the blue and green at which time he did and "bingo" .... Biscayne Blue.

You can see the Lavender around the edge off the lid and the rim of the can.


After he was done mixing the paint he told me that all of the Valspar that they mix is Latex and the paint that I had was oil base so he wasn't sure how that was going to work. (didn't tell me that before he mixed it)

My question to you is ...... how much is that going to matter?

Bad News!
Not going to Work! Latex is water based!!! That's why I said to use the Acrylic oils from the Art supply store. I would NOT use that paint on your boat. Sorry but the two just don't mix.:redface:

About your Floating Floor...Was the original floor attached to the sides of the hull? If so, then I'd recommend you go back with it the same way. On most fiberglass boats the deck plays a part in the overall structural integrity of the hull but... Since your hull has all those ribs, it's a lot like an aluminum boat hull, so I'm not sure if it is necessary. Just something to think about.

Ok ...... the paint is out. I will have to go and get more and tint it myself. I kind of thought that it was like a dye that tinted the paint and didn't matter if it was Oil or Latex. I figured that Lowes had Valspar and that is what they sold and tinted. Never really gave it a second thought until the guy that mixed it mentioned the Latex. Well, another lesson learned.

As for the sole in the boat, it had a sheet of rotted ply in it when I bought it and didn't look like it was original. It was not attached to the sides. I have a catalog of my boat that kind of shows the sole as not being attached to the sides at least that is the way it looks to me. Maybe you guys see it differently ..... here is the photo ....what do you think?

Sucks about the paint!

That sure enuf is a free floating deck. I'd say you can build her back any way you see fit. Kinda makes your bilge a moot point now.

I think I am going to close in the sole ...... It looks nice and will keep all the water and stuff from collecting under it plus I already have the bilge box in.

I am going to order new vinyl for the rub rails. I figured out which one I need for around the cap but I am not sure what to order for the rail along the hull. There was nothing in this rail when I bought the boat so I don't know what it looked like or what holds it in place. Sure can use some help on this one. Thanks.

I put some ply down and set the seats in to see how they look and ... WOW ... they are big. They are pretty high. I am going to have to cut them down some. I am just wondering if they are too big.




Is there a certain height from the top of the seat to the floor or does it vary from boat to boat, seat to seat?

Jon,
The seats look good. IMO you should make the seats fit your height. You don't want them so low that your knees or in your face when you sit.
You need to be high enough to see over the bow when your trying to plane out. I don't know of any set standards for the seat height.
Your looking really good and getting closer to splash.

Jon Sob, sit in the seat and see how they feel. Go for a comfortable sitting height. You don't want your butt on the floor when seated and you don't want your feet dangling in the air. All else should take care of itself.

Thanks guys for the input. I sat on the seats and it just feels like I am sitting on the boat instead of in the boat. I don't know if it is because the windshield is off or the seats are just too big for a small boat. The seats are very comfortable.

In this photo it appears that the seats are mounted to the top of the rail above the ribs. The bottom of my seats are 4" above that rail. I am thinking if I cut the seat base down 4" then the seats will be kind of close to where they were originally.


Sound right?

It's your boat and I would make them feel the best to you.
If you can, you might want to place the windsheild back on the boat and see what it feels like.
Just make it feel right for you.

Question?? How cold is too cold to lay down PB or glass with poly resin? I am talking about in the garage with no heat. It has been in the 40's and 50's. Have a small section of the cap that I want to fix.

You can get an electric space heater @ Wal-Mart for $40 bucks. Blue Tarp at Harbor Freight for 5 Bucks. Build a tent Heat it up. Glass away!!!!!! Would'nt try glassin when the substrate is below 60?. I did this in my garage last winter and it worked like a charm.

Thought about that but was worried that the fumes would ignite. Did you warm it up and then kill the heat while working or did you leave the heat on the entire time you worked?

Heat it, with the heater up close. Kill it, Patch it, Heat it again but this time keep the heater 8' away and you'll be fine. It only takes 1/2 hour for it to cure. Then shut the heat off

I have used the halogen lights before.
They work in small areas.
