Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

Did my test on the "Zolatone" paint and found that when the background (grey) was wet or dry it didn't make much of a difference. I tried hitting the brush with a stick and tried hitting the stick with the brush and ended up having more control over the paint when I put on rubber gloves and ran my finger across the bristles. I tried not to use a lot of paint on the brush and started on a piece of cardboard then went to the ply. I tried not to go heavy to keep the spatter smaller.

This is the splashwell on my "Flamingo" It's only 6" deep and 6" wide tapering down to 4". I have a high Transom so I'm guessing it will be sufficient. You could fab one of these very easily. Would not HIDE anything but would prevent some of the backwash if you have some.

Hey Woody .... I am trying to picture how that mounted .... have any pics of it on the boat?

Here's the pic of it temporarily mounted.
Splashwell.jpg

AS you can see it has a lip that hooks over the transom and serves as the Transom cap along with some additional side pieces. They screw into the transom with small screws to hold it all in place as well as the drain tube holding it secure. Everything was 3M 5200 coated when I put it back on.

Thats nice and would be easy to build ..... I didn't realize that your transom was straight across. Mine is lower in the middle.

Harder to fab, but it could still be done. It wouldn't have to be full width like WOG's.

JonSob Splashwell.JPG

If you have the room w/ the motor in the up position, you could have the inner face (in blue) flat/straight across instead of following the transom contour. It isn't drawn this way, but the inner face should be raised to be higher then the transom lip, to prevent following seas from washing over the splashwell. The bottom should pitch towards the transom for the splashwell drains. But those are per usual detailing of splashwells.

You could mockup the splash w/ regular cardboard & tape.

More like this:
JonSob Splashwell2.JPG But you'll get the idea..... As long as it's out of the way of the motor being fully raised......

Thanks jb .... I kind of like both ways but I think that I would prefer to go the whole width of the stern. I am still tossing around the idea but not sure if I am sold on a splashwell or not. I do like the one that Woody has on his boat better than the one that I made up.

Thanks rr ..... one of these days I will make up my mind about the splashwell .... lol. My boat didn't have one but I sure would like to be able to hide the batt and fuel tank. I have decided to do one like Woody has on the Flamingo if I do one at all.

Been thinkin bout your dilema. How bout makin a bench seat to slide the battery and tank under. You could pad the top and put it on hinges so it would tilt forward for ease of access. Just a thought.

That was another option that I did consider and would be great if I didn't have the back to back seats. I wouldn't have very much room between the back to back and the bench. With a 13' boat you don't have a whole lot of room.

Have you thought about mounting tank/battery in the bow? Or maybe figure the bear minimum space needed at transom and make a bench style seat as wood suggested. I wish there were some better options for ya!

I think oops has a handy dandy hull stretcher that he'd surely loan ya!

Maybe you could give us some dimensions to work with. We all seem very very eager to fill the cockpit w/ tons of seating & storage...

Helm to bow, helm to transom, existing seat size both back to back (upright) and length reclined (lounge). Width to just for fun:D

Hey jb ...... They don't allow newbies (like me) to handle or operate oops handy dandy hull stretcher .... lol.

I will give you the numbers soon ...... It may take a day or two.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I too am not yet qualified to operate said device :D. My wife has graciously agreed to let me convalescent at a very nice (although affordable) mental recovery facility at a beach for 45 days after I apply to borrow the hull stretcher from oops. I'm unclear if the Jas Skillet show has anything to do w/ my need for recovery. She was also kind enough to reminded me that I have to admit I have a problem for real, meaningful recovery. I have pre-signed the commitment papers, after striking the MBS codicil.

Take your time, I can't believe it took this long for me to suggest it. I thought it about 45 Q&A posts ago about your space limits.;)

Ok here it is .......
IMG_0053.jpg

I didn't mark the distance but it is about 12" from the end of the seat to the transom.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

1st off let me ask you why you let Jas loose on your boat w/ an open tube of 5200???? I give him some grief but lots & lots of props too for his good work......

I think you need to revisit the small center section only (mostly) splashwell. Or find an interesting cabinet layout that has an integral splashwell. I am somewhat overtaxed in the brain power department at the moment. I just left WOG a long comment over on his thread. I need to ruminate on your delimma for a bit.

Thanks for the photos & dimensions. Hopefully WOG, oops, ez & others will pop in before the weekend too.....
