The porch paint is a good idea if starts to show some ware just put another coat on it....
The snaps for carpet sound good . I don,t know if velcro would last. Maybe they make a heavy duty kind.

Great Job Jon. My dad basically done the same with the boat we use to go out and grab a feed of fish or watch the whales or even an iceburg now and again . He leaves it tied to a morn all summer drags it up on shore end of the summer and flips it over ...beginning of the new season he checks the boat all over ...change what wood is getting soft and puts a new coat of paint on it. Nothing wrong with going that root as long as everything stays structurally sound.

Looks Great

Ditto on the gray paint. I like gray because it's relatively light, but it won't drive you insane trying to keep clean like a white sole and it should reduce the glare a bit too. Where did you get the paint itself? Does have a particular name/brand? Looks great! Thanks for the pics.

Thanks kfa ..... the paint is Valspar porch paint from Lowes and it is pretty thick. I coated everything top to bottom and front and back with this paint and it covers very well.

Thanks bear ...... I am going to try and do that speckled look, don't know what it is called but, it was in the trunk of the old cars. Maybe even in the old 'cuda. I am going to use some of the paint from the cap to try and tie in all the colors.

I know this is a bad image but something like this:

Thanks Jack .... I thought that I would keep an eye on it to watch for any rot and like you said just change any wood that is going bad. And by having it screwed in I can remove it to clean under it and let it dry out if needed and also check the bottom for rot.

Hey sp .... I am going to look into the velcro vs snaps and see what is out there. I just thought that with the little amount of wood that is in my sole that I would just paint it. I have an attached non-heated garage and for me to glass when it is cold is not even an option because of the fumes. I did all my glass work out in the back of the house when it was warm. By painting the sole it allowed me to continue working on the sole without waiting for warm weather.

Zolatone is the splatter 'paint' used on the inside hull & deck of some runabouts.

I read that paint lays down & looks more like Zolatone when the splatter is done wet on wet. Paint out 1st coat of background color, let dry, prep for 2nd coat per manufacturers directions, paint out 2nd coat. Apply accent color splatter by tapping/flicking brush across wooden stick while base coat is still wet. For a 2nd accent color, mix cap & deck colors together. Mix either small amount of cap paint into base coat, or small amount of deck paint into cap color. This 2nd splatter coat is applied while other 2 are still wet, and could be applied more random/sparsely.

Use Zolatone as a search term on forum homepage....

Here is a thread WOG replied to:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=458440&highlight=zolatone

Andgott also had great results on his Lake & Sea restore, but he maybe currently unavailable. WOG got great looking results on his too!

Thanks jb ..... I could not remember what it was called but your right that is it and I did see that on WOG post and that is what gave me the idea to do it. I didn't realize that it was done wet on wet so thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Actually, WOG did his dry, and is very happy with the results. Andgott's was wet on wet, and I happen to like it better. Since everything else is going so well w/ WOG's build, I wouldn't say 1 method is better then the other. It is more personal preference whether surface is wet or dry when you apply the splatter. You might see what paint each used, and compare that w/ what you're planning on using.

I had planned on doing a test on some scrap ply so I think I will test both wet and dry and see how they come out. I know I had read about hitting the brush with a stick and then I read where someone hit the stick with the brush. Not sure it would matter but I am going to test both of those ways also. I will post the results with pics.

Great! I'll do the faux Zolatone on the insides of the hull, but I am leaning towards Duraback on the deck.

You know how we love the pix! Have a good week!

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I am trying to construct an area for my batt and fuel tank as oops! suggested. I've seen where the fuel tank and batt are tucked under the splashwell out of the way and since my boat didn't have a splashwell I thought that I would make one. I picked up some corrugated plastic from a surplus place for $5 and built one. It is not finished yet I have to glue it all together and close the edge but I wanted some input from you guys before I go any further. What do you guys think?

This is what it is made of:

It is all plastic:

Jon Sob,

I don't know what others will say, but I think it looks great.

I like the gray deck also. You will be on the water soon.

Hey John, is that stuff strong enough to step on? Whats your plan on sealing it ? I have a splashwell that I may not use . I plan on making something close to what you have.

I would like to coat it with poly resin and 1708 and tab it to the cap and transom but I am not sure if the plastic will accept the resin. I need to research that and run some test. The main reason for the splashwell is to hide the batt and fuel tank and to keep me and anyone else from stepping in the bilge box. I have looked at it several time and am not sure if I want to use it or not.

If you decide to fab the Splashwell I'd mix some resin an apply it to the material. I know for sure it will eat the blue slab foam from Home Depot but not sure about the stuff you have. To make it strong enuf you'll need at least two layers of 1708 with CSM in between and a final layer of CSM to hide the 1708 pattern. You could do the same fabrication with 1/4" luan ply and be insured the glass would work.

Thanks Woody .... I am not totally sold on the idea of having a splashwell yet so I am going to put it on the back burner for now. I thought that the plastic would be light and wouldn't add extra weight to the boat. The boat came without a splashwell and I may just leave it that way.

Thanks Kent ..... I am going to try that Zolatone look on the inside so I am going to do a test to see how it comes out. I am going to try it a couple of ways and see what it looks like.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

I just wanted to throw this out there, but check JDA's thread, & rather then 2 jump seats & a center console w/ a glovebox lid, make a splashwell that fits between 2 jump seats.

Fuel under starboard seat & battery under port seat (which ever is heavier under port) make the seat bottom a lid. If you make a continuous front 'apron' from hull to hull, you'd also enclose under the splashwell and have additional storage reachable through a door or hatch in the face or by lifting either seat bottom and reaching through......

Paint/graphic wizard I am not:

JDA center console.jpg

There would probably need to be a small area built out along the seat backs to give you a place to run steering & throttle cables to the motor, I didn't show that in my re-work of JDA's pix. That would make your storage area bigger.

Just a thought.......

Also kind of depends on how you'll use the boat, sitting & cruising, just you, you + 3-4 people, 1 5-6gal gas tank w/ a 2-3gal spare, long range cruises 15+ gals. A tank that big might be too big to 'hide' under the seats & splashwell.

When Teamster pops by your thread, the new jump seat/splashwell layout give you a real nice place to sit & run a tiller arm.....

Hey Jon,

I think it looks good also... So if you decide to add it, and the poly resin doesn't chow it, you can glass it in, maybe add some bracing attached to the deck. You then could stash battery, fuel, other gear... If you don't like seeing everything underneath, add some snaps, and cover with grey vinyl? un-snap the cover for access to the area... Just an idea...

Oh.

I dig the spatter sepeckle finish... I plan on that finish inside all my hatches...

have a good day!

That is kind of what I had in mind to hang a curtin of some sort to hide it all. Just like you said unsnap it and there you go.

Hey jb .... I saw that on JDA's thread but I am not sure that I would have the room for something like that. My boat is only a 13ft'er so I don't have a lot of room and I am trying not to add any additional weight to it.

Re: Need help with transom repair w/pics

This is the splashwell on my "Flamingo" It's only 6" deep and 6" wide tapering down to 4". I have a high Transom so I'm guessing it will be sufficient. You could fab one of these very easily. Would not HIDE anything but would prevent some of the backwash if you have some.
