Hi Ed ..... thanks for dropping by haven't heard from you for a while. The weather is bad here as well but I am trying to get some of the little things done. I am trying to find a good heater for my garage so that I can work on those really cold days.

Hey Jon whats the range of motion on your steering ? My old system only moves 8 inches left to right .
Thats only 4 inches each way from center. Does,nt seem like much..

Hey sp ..... my wheel goes around 4 full times (2 each way) and that equals just under 9 inches at the end of the cable.

Thanks bear ..... I'll bet you can't wait till the grinding is done ..... I hated it. You won't even remember it on splash day ..... lol.

Started pulling wires today for the batt, bilge pump and the lights.


I am thinking that I would like to put some sort of socket on the cabinet that I have under the bow so that I can remove it (for troubleshooting or adding additional wires) without disconnecting the wires from the fuse block. Kind of like plugging in the trailer lights. I would be able to unplug it and remove it. All the wires would run from the fuse bolck to the socket and from the plug to the lights, pump .... ect.


Good idea? Bad idea?

I'm not sure if the plugs are a good idea or not, but I'd spend some time trying to find some twist-lock plugs & sockets if you want to use a plug system. They tend to be much more $ per & larger in size. And would they be available in marine-grade instead of extension cord/work site/garage use....Hmm interesting question........ Some of the quick connectors w/ an insulated 'rubber' jacket, like what they use to connect audio speakers? Hhmmm.....Lower voltage ~ 12V DC, individually low amps. For use w/ the marine wire???

As best I can tell, if wire, connector & fuse are sized correctly, you can probably use the quick connect FULLY Insulated connectors. There is also a helpful wire selection guide (particularly for color coding) here. Includes voltage & voltage drop specs....

Not to be pushy but:
When are we going to hear about a splashwell/layout decision & a pending sewing machine purchase?

jb ..... haven't given much thought to the splashwell been cutting holes for switches and plugs getting ready to do some of the wiring. My seats are in pretty good shape so I am not ready for a sewing machine yet although I must admit that woody's seats are looking pretty darn good and have me thinking that I may just take on that project next winter. Not much of a sewer tho ... lol.

As for the plug for the cabinet .... I was thinking more on the lines of a plug like on a semi trailer where you just put the plug into the socket. I am shying away from that at this point 'cause I am thinking that it will be more trouble then it is worth.

I was thinking too that you get this big plug wired up, then you can't get the light or whatever off the deck or through the dash, because of this big huge plug on the end of the wire anyway.........

Not sure if I would go that direction, as it's reliant on all your systems. So if say the stern light has issues, you need to disconnect power to everything. What you could do is use a buss bar as a hub. Run wire from stern light to buss bar, then to fusebox. You have a disconnect point... But also added resistance... When I'm doing wiring I like to do as much point to point as possible... If you ever what to chat boat DC stuff fire me a PM, I'm not an expert, but have wired or modified the electrical systems in 3 boats...

I would also use terminal ends with heat shrink or add it if they do not... I get all my supplies from Greg http://gregsmarinewiresupply.com/Zen/

Thanks jb and bear ..... you guys are right. I just thought that if I wanted to remove that cabinet I would be able to "unplug" it and wouldn't have to disconnect all the wires from the fuse block. I am not sure why I would have to remove it but ...... I am just going to do it the way it should be and then worry about it later if the time comes that I have to remove it.

Don't know how it was put together but it was probably under a splash well similar to WOG's BF#1 that you've seen....

Hey sp ...... kind of cold over here but not much snow. I am waiting for supplies to arrive so that I can continue. I have been just sitting back and watching the progress of yourself and others. Hardtop came out sweet and congrats on scoring the equipment. You will be in the water before you know it.

jb ..... Now that I like. Simple, clean looking and easy to put together and well ventilated. I like that a lot. Now to take some measurements and look for material ...... Thanks.

I don't remember but Lowes or HD had aluminum screen in 2'X2' squares in silver, black, bronze/copper here. I think it was Lowes & it was near the 4X8 sheets of blue & pink insulation that is used as floatation under decks. Print that pix, it may help jog someone's memory & it is available in multiple 'pattern/texture'.

Don't tell the SC crowd, but those are both tinny's:facepalm:
