I am trying to restore an old handmade boat"Grandpa built". It has a wood hull with a fiberglass shell. The motor works fine, Its seems to be mostly cosmetic. I am in the process of sanding at the moment. There was alot of paint peeling and chipping around the top half of the boat. It seems the boat has several layers of paint. Some spots it is worn through the glass to the wood, but not many spots. Can I patch these areas or fill in with resin? Here are some pics please tell me what my next step or steps should be.

Your grandfather built are really nice boat. Sure looks worth the effort to restore it.

A couple of ideas come to mind:

1. If the entire boat has one layer of glass/resin then you might want to strip the entire boat of paint, lay on another layer of glass and spray or roll on a gel coat finish. Lots of work but will look like a new boat.

2. Remove the paint in the areas that are worn through the glass, add new patch glass/resin. Continue to sand the the boat and repaint. Less work and expense, should look nice, will need paint again in a number of years.

Either way, you might want to look at renting a "media blaster" (aka sand blaster) and use the proper media to strip the paint from the glass surfaces. It will save you lots of time over scraping and sanding. Plus it will not damage the existing glass work like a sander can.

The entire keel area could probably use a nother layer or two of glass about a foot or so wide from stem to stern.

If the keel is true and straight a good idea may or may not be, depending on your available resources, to jack up the boat and put a couple of 2X6's the length of the keel and then adjust the trailer bunks to the new height. Safety First.

As your working before you know it you'll have four thousnad pounds of tools, materials, first mates, etc. all resting on one little trailer roller(bow).

I'll be back.

Enjoy

It certainly looks like fiberglass to me. A very thin tight weave.

There are other types of fiberglass available that are thicker and of differant thickness and strand patterns. What you have would work best as a top layer.

Based on your project you will consume most of that roll and more.

Re: Need some advise. with pics

ok then,

the forward vee on the left side; the plywood looks to be delaminating...or the thin layers that make up the plywood are separating.

there's some dry rot fungus around the bilge vents. brush on some of the pink antifreeze, its glycol. and keep soaking the area leave it to dry. it will kill the dry rot fungus. this is very bad stuff to leave around opened up as it is sweet to animals and deadly. the wood bugs and worms hate it too.

the black photo with red stripe appears to be the transom and part of the keel. if that is bare wood around on the transom at the chine then that will have to be taken back to solid whatever...plywood. looks are deceiving. the bottom of the transom should be a solid plank at the chine. this is structural and cannot be toyed with on the cheap.

like the holes near the vents...the dry rot could be a couple feet in each direction and have the strength of a toothpick.

my endless advice would be to continue your "Gramp's" knowledge and craftmanship and complete proper repairs.

where do you wanna start ?

I think that the pic that your talking about is the keel up towards the bow. There are no pics of the transom. The keel looks true to me, but it has some spots where there is a few chunks missing. Those are the pics that I took. Can I use a putty or filler to get the keel looking right? Can I use the fiberglass that I have to do the repairs on the holes? Also in the V in the cabin should I scrap it down and put on the antifreeze, and will I be able to paint over the antifreeze when it dries? I agree with you about doing things right and thats what I intend to do. I am learning as I go, and thanks to you guys I get some great insite. Keep it coming please.

That is very good news about the keel. You will have to judge if the nicks are too large to be left as is. Sealing it up is important though.

For the holes I guess that's at the vents. You can poke around with an ice pick or small flat blade screwdriver into the wood. If it sinks into the wood easily then the wood is weak. Hopefully those holes are just that and can be cut out and replaced. One way is to put a backer board underneath the deck and lay your new wood in from the top, then shape it to the form of the original deck. The idea is to keep the structure complete and strong. Fill in around it. Then fiberglass if you prefer.

The fiberglass cloth that you have should be protected from dust and dirt if you can. Use it.
Maybe intended for waterproofing in single layers. More strength in multiple layers.

Is the vee delaminated plywood ? What is the wood doing there? If its coming apart somethings gottta be done. Just one thing though, if you put that antifreeze all over the place there's gotta be ventilation to let it dry. And don't close yourself up in a space that hasn't dried yet without alot of fresh air. When it dries you can sand it, paint it, glue it, fill it. The pink antifreeze. The glycol.

The holes...if they are dry rotted it will spread through the veins in the wood.

Again, in the forward vee. If that is a douglas fir plywood. Rotary cut douglas fir will "check" which is similar to your picture. The paint splits and then peels off. Nothing unusual. It is known for that. It flakes off one spot and you need a chisel to get off another spot.

Sand, fair everything in, finish sand, prime, paint, splash.

There are some old formulas that were used way back in the day for sealing wood. A mixture of turpentine and linseed oil.

Enjoy

Re: Need some advise. with pics

Ok guys I have some updated pics. Finally got done with the prep and got to lay down the primer. Man what alot of work it is to prime. Its still not perfect but it will definatly work. Im going to be painting on Fri. so I will have some new pics then too. I used the brightside paint and primer after seeing some of the results on here. Good stuff for the price. Next is going to be the bottom paint after I figure out how to get it up off the trailer.Well here are the newest pics.

Grandpa would be proud that you resurrected his dream.

What did you do regarding fiberglassing and repair?
