not sure on this motor, but could you have a faulty head gasket?

Re: need some answers please!!!!

I wonder if the revving up/down is because the pistons are getting tight in the cylinders and causing resistance (DUE TO OVERHEATING.) My engine seized so I went about digging into the problem: I renewed the impeller and thermostats too, but I also renewed the rubber finger-looking water diverters in the engine block (you see those if you remove the head, they look like a piece of rubber fuel hose a few inches long placed in there next to each cylinder in the water passages.) I was told by a local marine engine repair guy that those will wear and turn kind of egg-shaped instead of perfectly round and prevent water from passing through the block correctly. I know you don't want to do all that though. You did say that the water peeing out was cool, but I believe it should be at least warm. First rule out any lack of spark situation: clamp a timing light to each of the spark plug wires one at a time and just look at the light blink (if one of the spark plug wires blinks off at the wrong time compared to the others it may be a spark or power pack issue as well.) That is a simple/quick way to rule that out. If you know anyone with one of those infra red temperature gauges you just point it at anything to get its temperature (I got one from Harbor freight tools for $14.) I used mine when the motor seized again to verify that one of the cylinders was overheating. I just pointed the thermometer at each cylinder and looked at the reading...sure enough the "hot" cylinder was truly a higher temp. After mine seized I could still run slow/idle, but not go fast.
Not to get too long winded but my other motor acted like that when the stator ring(under the fly wheel) wore out. Green corrosion looking drip marks in that area under the fly wheel is a sign of that. Also a resistance check for that (stator/charge coils) told me mine was out (resistance was out of range of what the manual said) and when I replaced it it ran smooth again. I believe that would effect the advance/timing at higher RPM's.

Not enough info.

did it ever run good for you?
is it new to you?
have you done a compression check?
done a spark test with a gap tester?
dump the NKG plugs before you melt a piston.
when alarm goes off, did you put your hand on the heads to verify?
have you rebuilt carbs with new kits yet?

Have you got the factory service book?
get it.:)

Re: need some answers please!!!!

When I first rebuilt my 90hp V4 I had a similar thing occur. At idle the motor would pump water all day. At speed it would start to overheat. I had installed a new pump kit, so I felt pretty confident that the problem lay elsewhere. I replaced t-stats, pulled the heads looking for blockages, etc. Turns out, there is a small channel moulded into the impeller housing that MUST be open for the pump to maintain its prime. The channel acts as a vent and I had goobered it up with sealant when I was installing the o-ring that seats between the top of the impeller cup and the housing. I took it apart, cleaned it out and haven't had a problem since...

Great info in above post.
Is it a salt water motor ???

Then I would be taking the heads off, checking out the water passages and also the deflectors. Could be a lot of "gunge" in there.
Just my 2 cents.

agree 100%, 25 year old salt water motor, will be blocked with salt deposits. also the cooling ports in exhaust cover get blocked with salt.

i will try that that thanks for the imput.. the water flow that comes out is strong and when the alarm goes off the water is warm not hot.also when i had the thermos done there were none in there:confused:

The tell tale flow lets you know that the water pump is functional, but reveals nothing of the flow of water through the cooling passages of the engine.

If the thermostats are working properly your problem is probably the water passage deflectors, which should be replaced.

See the thumbnail photos for examples of the results of misplaced deflectors in crossflow engines.

You should flush every time if running in salt water. If you don't, you will have trouble eventually. Pretty common problem, looks like you have it and the insides are not going to be pretty. Saltwater kills motors, even flushing won't get it all out but it makes a huge difference in lifespan.

they are solid rubber tubes(circled in above picture) and they swell and deform over time an cause overheating. there are 2 per side.

I've circled the water passage deflectors in the thumbnails; there are two on each bank of cylinders on your engine.

In the first picture the overheated cylinder sleeve has separated from the block. This block is now worthless.

The diagram shows the normal flow of water for your engine with the small arrows in the water passages.

jonesg i checked the plugs have spark in all 4. did not do a compression test yet.ran the motor with the muffs on i can touch the heads for about 4-5 sec before too hot. did find a small pinhole leak in the thermo housing. going to replace that. the pee coming out was not even warm..
