Just picked up a 79 SS..has a new floor..3/4"..its painted only and will be coming out. Its a blank canvas and I cant wait to design what I want. leaning towards a center console, with V bow seats up front.
I will be searching alot of these threads for some great ideas.

I had a restore thread with a 14' Starcraft fiberglass boat.

Well, thats in a dumpster right now after I stripped anything of value and realistically I will be boating come opening day.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Did you get the consoles and windshields? I too am doing a 16' SS but mine is under the frost every morning. I do not have windshields or ANY lights at all.... no steering, seats, missing everything so, I understand your project.

First thing I would do is flip it over and check the rivets. I replaced about 15 0n the bottom and patched about 30 misc screw holes in the transom.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Bob unfortunately there is no windshield or consoles..There was a center console not attached..(thank god) made out of 3/4 ply..painted and it was a 100# mess. It went in a dumpster as soon as I got it home.

I have alot of holes in the gunwales that need to be filled. The paint is a mess. Its chalky and flaky.
I have read in some threads of people "setting" rivets? Is that anging them in? or they need to be replaced. I plan on removing the floor tomorrow to see whats doing underneath. I am very excited to begin this, This is the boat I have been waiting for..well my daughters as well.

More to come

You can use closed end pop rivets and some epoxy to fill the holes.

Don't concern yourself with fully stripping paint.... dewax, sand/scuff and repaint over the old stuff.

When you cut the old deck ..... drill the rivet heads off and try to save the shape of the pieces.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Ez..Great thread ya have going..i have a ideas racing through my head after looking at it. I would assume finding a complete windshield set is going to be a difficult find. Making the consoles for each side would not be that bad, but I thing a center console with v bench seating in the bow and my wife wants a bench seat along the stern..maybe a flip top to access gas tank and battery miscellaneous..not sure. the gluvit should be applied on all seams, rivets and joints inside the hull correct?

Bob the gentlemen I bought the boat from mentioned Aircraft stripper for the paint removal. I have read that in a few threads. I think the dewax/ sanding would work just fine. I can see the original light blue on the topside under the ashen white paint job.

Bob what are you going to do on your SS. CC or side console?

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I am leaving mine as a dual console and have 2 pedestal mounts one front/rear for fishing. I am undecided on the seating but I know it will have to seat 4 due to the grand kids :)

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Bob do you have a thread going? I would like to see some pictures if possible.
I may consider double console with the type of windshield on the new starcraft 170 DC. I also need the seating for a minimum of 4 (and 2 dogs):)
Its going to be a tubing boat/fishing. Trout and chasing stripers. So a live well I have to consider.

many ideas and as time moves on I will make sense of it all..any comments or suggestions are welcomed.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Did a little work today on the boat. I removed the floor and carpet from the sides of the boat. You can see the crude removal of what was the bow seat area. What the hell are people thinking when they do this. Then they took the wood pieces and they used that to support the little flip top locker that was at the bow. They screwed through the bow hull to secure the wood!! A half dozen large rivets will fill the holes.
Other wise it cleaned up well. I took a Ginsu knife and slid into the drainage area to clean out the dirt and such that was clogging. It flows freely front to back. There are a few missing rivets that hold the stringer in place.

Is that red glue like substance GLUVIT? It is used on the entire inside of the boat at the seams. I have never used it before not sure what it looks like and I do plan on using it before I button up the floor and floatation materials.

Drawing up a design for the inside of the boat. gets drk early so not sure how much will get done this week. Installing heat in the shop garage so I will have a place to work on her in the future.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Check my thread, we're in pretty much the exact same spot! I had some weird goop in mine as well. I don't think it's Gluvit. Maybe something similar. I just powerwashed mine today paying special attention to all the rivets and seams in preparation for the Gluvit.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I saw that! Up front you have the same mess, heavy in the center. It actually is clogging the drainage space in the first rib.(lol..I have no clue what its called). Where did you buy the Gluvit? I have not ordered it yet.

I am keeping up with your thread..your jupiter has inspired me as well as many others..Keep up the great work.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Thanks. iboats was out of stock on the Gluvit when I ordered. Prices varied all over the board on it when I looked. I ended up getting it from wholesalemarine.com whom I've dealt with successfully numerous times before. Good price and quick shipping.

Vert I got my ( aluminum ) closed end rivets from Grainger locally they are not cheap and you cant just get 10 of them I had to order a box of 250 when I got mine but I will find uses for most of them although the original reason for getting them was to fill all the screw holes in my hull.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Pauly if you need some rivets let me know I have a PILE of 3/16 closed end rivets from where I had to fill all the holes from some idgit that thought screwing wood stringers into an aluminum boat through the bottom of the HULL would be a good idea . I got 250 rivets to seal 24 holes LOL so I still have a few left over :D. Your moving right along on yours . Let me tell you now is the time to think about painting especially if you plan to flip it to paint the bottom ( it will never be any lighter than it is right now ) LOL. I got my Gluvit from a local marine dealer as I try to support my local economy as much as I can also got my rivets from my local grainger ( although they are technicaly a national chain ) .

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Rick, thanks for the offer. I could use a couple dozen rivets.
Just let me know what ya need. really dont have the need for 250..unless I buy another boat.. hmm I think that happens alot around here:eek: I have to look into the larger rivets..I think they are 1/2". The "idgit" before me used self tapping screws through the hull to attach some scabed boards in the bow.. I am currently reading your thread from start to where you are now..just finished EZ's. Paint is definately the smart move while its light. Thinking of a paint scheme now..Black and Silver/ White accents..
I have plenty of time to get her ready for Lake Anna..I will be looking into the cabin route... Expect more in the way of progress in a week..Back to reading...

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Nice. Glad to know I wasn't the the only one in a 25 mile radius to buy a 14ft glass starcraft and have to strip it and look for an alominum. Check my post for the story. Look for 2 starcrafts in 2 months. I found a decent 16ft Holiday for 450 in Naugatuck about 10 days ago. I'm doing the samething everybody else is. I need to post pics of my progress this past weekend. PaulyV I see you live in Bristol CT. I'm in Vernon right up the road. PM me and we can maybe exchange help, ideas, parts, whatever. Nice to know someone this close in the same boat ( no pun really). This place is great, so much info my heads going to pop.

Later Amigos,
