Nevada Boat Owners...Fiberglass Repair

We own a '97 Bayliner Capri 1950 that the sun, beaching, and the occassional dock bump has taken it's toll on. We want to have the hull repaired where needed, but I'm not all that good with fiberglass. I'm looking for any recomendations for who does very good work in Henderson or Las Vegas. I've looked at Nevada Boat Company's website, and they seem legit. Anybody have any experience with them?

Also looking for someone to redo the carpet and upholstery. Any recomendations here?

Please understand I'm on a strict budget here as these are tough times.

I purchased carpet and upholstery online and installed them myself. It was a lot easier then I thought it was going to be. There are many threads on here with guys that have done their own upholstery, and I would recommend reading through them. Carpet is much easier.

How bad is the hull? Is it just faded or is there more damage to it? If its just faded, then there is a good chance a lot of elbow grease can get it looking nice again.

I have never used Nevada Boat Company, so I can't comment on them.

I haven't heard anything about Nevada Boat Company. I do all my own work so I don't have experience with the local shops.

Here's something to try... Call a couple boat shops/stores that you know don't do fiberglass work and ask them about fixing your fiberglass damage. When they tell you they don't do fiberglass repair, ask them if they know anyone else that does good work. Every time I call a business and get the "No, we don't do that, don't carry that" I always ask if they know who does, it works really...

Have you looked through the resto forum yet??? Boat repair isn't all that difficult if you are handy. And, it's going to be a LOT cheaper doing it yourself.

As one of my options, I am looking for online sources for seat covers I can install myself. Any suggestions? I need to repair a section of floor (cheap Bayliner plywood )(then again, the boats been ridden hard and put away wet too many times :facepalm, and install carpet myself.

Good suggestions for finding reputable shops. The hull has a bad spot about halfway back where I must have hit something underwater and the glass looks like it's flaking, and the gelcoat on the keel has been rubbed off, down to bare glass, on the very bottom from beaching. I'd attempt to repair these myself, but I know I have no patience with glass. This I'll "contract out", but want to exlore upholstery and carpet myself.

Man, you sound like the guy right behind me......You wouldn't happen to live in a cul-de-sac with a couple of barn looking sheds, are you?

I noticed they just recently got a boat and it looks like a Bayliner.

Ha ha, no, I'm in the area of Green Valley Pkwy and Sunset Rd. My back wall borders Duck Creek. We bought Skinnydipper new in January '98 (she was a year-end leftover, so I got a good deal).

Just an update: Took her to Edwards Upholstery, over by Accuracy Gun Shop on Boulder, for the seats, bow cover, and top. He does good work and made the seat covers to match the OEM colors and style. Reasonable prices too. I would recommend him.

She is currently at Nevada Boat Co. getting a face lift. I went over there and looked around at the boats he had in works and was pretty impressed, so I gave them a shot. I had gone to Dry Dock Boat Sales where we bought the boat and asked for their recommendation. They said they have a guy who can do fiberglass repairs. I wanted someone who DOES, not CAN DO, glass repair, so I went elsewhere. They had no recommendation.

I had gone to Dry Dock Boat Sales..................... They had no recommendation.

OH, You went over there... They didn't wan you to leave (gotta spend some money) and didn't want to run you of by telling you to go elsewhere. Should have called and they would have quickly made a recommendation,,, just to get you off the phone

(Just joking. It doesn't always work for me either)

to late now, but the can do guy that dry dock uses is super good.

the 310 got away form me in the wind and i had a 3" angle iron post gouge the side of jill's 310.

as she hadn't seen it yet and i felt so bad, i was in a hurry to get it fixed. the guy came out and fixed it on the lake and matched the gell coat perfectly. you can't see where the gash was. $250

he had worked on fountain and high end speed boats before coming to vegas.

dry dock can run hot and cold depending on who you talk to.

worked good for me as they were the only --first -- out fit that could work on the water in the park-------have to be licensed by park service to work in the park or on the lake

Splash!!!

Splash!!!

Well after a long several months, we finally splashed Skinnydipper this past Sunday at Lake Mojave. Our facelift included:

New upholstery, top, and bow cover done by Edwards Upholstery.
Fiberglass repair and keel repair, complete buffing out, new striping, new rub rail by Nevada Boat.
New dash and gauges.
New NFB rack and pinion.
Minor floor repair and new carpet.
New sound system.
Tune-up, fluids, and impeller.

Everything went well. Love that NFB steering, lot less effort to keep on course. Only thing I need to work out is there is a flat spot when throttling up. I'm thinking my accelerator pump might have dried out. Carb kit is only like $40 though, worst case.

Mojave was great. Flat water, low 90's, water cool but wade-able, few boats ('cept for those lookie-loo's who repeatidly came into our cove! If you enter a cove, and it's occupied, move on! If you enter a cove, and it's occupied by people enjoying the sun as nature intended, don't hang around and stare, MOVE ON! Jeeze! (And no, we weren't doing that.)) Sorry about the rant...

Here's looking forward to our next outing on our newly referbished Bayliner!
