What does the sending unit look like? Is it a straight tube with a floating collar on it that slides up and down...where the position of the collar changes the magnetic field and it registers through the sensor? Like these? http://wemausa.com/

Heat should soften the epoxy, but you don't want to damage the wool or the varnish heat gun or oven would do just that. what you need is steam from a high pressure boiler, at 200psi it would be close to 385?F(don't have my tables handy so I may be a little off) a jet of that from a blow down valve directly on the bright work would soften the epoxy. As for the repair, I know you are handy, but don't know what your skill level is with that kind of fabricating so like you said, welding or machine shop may be your best bet, then rechrome. Good luck

You gave me a good idea. After trying to get the cap of with no success I boiled myself a pan of water. Got it good and hot. Placed the end piece in the rapid boiling water for several minutes......and VOILA....came right off!

Still crawling the bilges when I found this. This is a compartment in a hanging locker that leads to a space below the master head. I found the shower drain hose disconnected, the shower filter and pump mounting blocks delaminated from the sole. I need to get on this one.....not smelling to good.

That's a common term used among us capt's.

I somewhat lucked out. My mate (Kimi, my love and lady) spent several hours cleaning this area and the machinery room today. Now my plans are to 5200 down a couple pieces of teak blocks and remount the equipment. The leaks are repaired at this point.

My job is to save the owner money.....not spend it!

I sat on that project for a couple days hoping for a response that may work. I spoke to several of my people about it also.

Your idea of using a liquid instead of direct heat made sence, that along with having it brazed. I found I can have it repaired for the fraction of the cost of a new one. Saving $ is good.

I love firefox, you can turn on the ad-blocking software and internet pages will load MUCH faster.

This is the DC breaker panel at the helm. I've never had all these breakers at a helm, usually they are located with the AC breakers in a secure place. They have been hit a few times by accident......by me and others. I'm thinking on fabricating a cover for them.

Any ideas?

Maybe a simple dark lexan cover bent into a U-shape (actually upside down U-shape) with a hinge along the top maybe. Set the depth of the "U" part at the height of the switches. Just flip open the cover when you need to throw a switch and then drop it down to prevent hitting the switches accidently.

Thanks for your idea, Greg. I will give it some thought.

I came up with the idea of covering the switches just a couple days ago since I have bumped the panel a couple times and the breakers trip easily. I didn't mention my idea to the boss yet about my idea. The bossman's wife was down here on the boat for a couple days visiting. I get a phone call that the waste tank indicator light was not on in the heads. I had her check the breaker and it was off. She stated it happens all the time. She asked if I could cover the panel with something to keep this from continuing to happen. Keeping one step ahead of the owners is a good thing.

When I get around to installing a cover I'll post a photo.

I guess this could be a restore...........not yet! The hatch lids on the flybridge couch were a rotted mush. I made some new ones. Going to have the couch reupholstered next week.

With a piece of aluminum diamond plate, which you can get at Lowes, you could easily fabricate a good looking cover with a Dremel tool and a vice. Use adhesive backed neoprene rubber to cushion it. Drill it for a small piece of piano hinge and secure it to the console with SS screws.

Diamond plate kind of announces, "This is important, and not to be messed with.
