These are called "Lift-the-Dot" fasteners. I have never seen any with a screw thread longer than 5/8", but I will hunt for them for you. Another option would be to replace the LTD fasteners with snaps. I can send you the snap barrels (male portion) which can be installed with any length screw that you want. Matter of fact, I can send you all the parts you need, including the snap tool used to install them (that part you would have to send back).

Those twist pins look like a modified thumb-tack. Do they hold well under foot traffic? ...Are they going to end up being dislodged and scattered? I'd also be concerned about the decking underneath the carpet with the twist pins. The snaps sound like a great idea. Are LTD fasteners available in that form? I guess that's what I was referring to, when I mentioned "rivoting" them on to the carpet... Snap tool... Duh:redface:

Twist pins hold very well and would almost be invisible to the eye since they are clear and on the floor. Most of the time you will see them in furniture, holding on arm covers on chairs and sofas. They are just pushed in 1/8" like a thumbtack, then screwed the rest of the way down. Very secure and removable.

The Lift-the-Dot (LTD) studs are normally finished off with a 5/8" screw or a machine screw base. As I mentioned, I'll see if I can come up with longer ones. Aside from that, I would switch to standard snaps and screw in snap barrels.

Bad news Sasto...

Just got off the phone with the supply house and the only LTD fastener screw length made is 3/8" or 5/8".

2 options:

1) Cut a very small slit thru the carpet backing so the stud can penetrate deeper into the wood
2) Replace the LTD fasteners with snaps. Anchor the snap barrel with a longer screw and replace the olf LTD fastener with snap caps.

After you gave me the name of the part I went on a search and found the same. I think I will gingerly remove a little carpet behind the screws and try to get a better bite. Thanks for your offer and all your help

I am sure you will find a much better way to install that.

I have the salon TV covered. No more cable thru the window. Now check out the master stateroom TV cable. The cable runs thru the emergency exit hatch. This is troubling to me. I have a few ideas, but the best come from sitting at the Tiki Hut sipping a brew. Thats where I'm headed to get smarter. I'll post a photo of the repair later, I'm outta here.

It is absolutely amazing to me what some people find acceptable. Aside from running that cable through the hatch, what if you actually found yourself in the water and needed to lower the steps to get out?

Hard to find good help these days... But on a lighter note, the installer didn't tie any knots when he wrapped that cable around the ladder.

Hard to find any help in Flori-Duh! Folks come down here to find employment and end up living the life of a beachbum. I was good at being a beachbum several years ago till I ran out of money. :redface:

I can't run the sat. thru the boats cable system because of the splitters used, so each cable must go seperately to each TV. There are 4 TV's onboard but I'm only concerned with the salon and master stateroom. I don't need one in my stateroom.

The dish is mounted to a piling and more than likely won't be moved. Most marinas I've ever stopped at have cable TV. We are planning a week trip to Key West soon. I may very well keep the cable going thru the emergency hatch while at this dock......but not wrapped around the ladder!

I don't think so. I'll bet some Navy guys know what this is for. I can only assume fire or CO sniffer of some sort.

If I can't get the answer I'm going here to get "smarter". .

After I read your post boyoboy, I did some research and found you were correct. I sopke with an oldtime RV'er and he confirmed what you are saying. I guess these were common in RV's in the 70's.

If there is not already a small void inside the rub rail, you can easily make one with a Dremel tool or Roto-Zip. Just be sure to set your depth properly to avoid accidentally going too deeply into the rubber. The space only has to be the depth of the outer diameter of the cable... maybe 1/64th of an inch deeper to ensure it's under no pressure at any time. I would go with the same diameter. Make it a perfect fit. You can quickly make a guide rail with a couple of 1X2's or 2X4's with the rub rail secured in between and make a perfectly straight, centered channel for the cable.

I havent gotten to check in in a while, so I just saw the thing with the satellite installer. I know a couple around here who really do take pride in their work and hiding it and making it look good. Then I see a lot that just do whatever is easiest and fastest. I'm sorry you've got to deal with that, but I'm hearing good ideas and I'm sure you'll get it done nicely.

Just got around to see what was going on up here in the boating forum side and I see you got yourself quite the job.
As for the coax install, have fun, looks like a pain in the you know were.
(but I would say, follow the existing wires bundle/bundles paths and do your drops)
