Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

I'm blessed with several deep water lakes close by. But this is a one of a kind. There used to be 30+ pound Kamloop trout in it, when I was a kid. I know of a couple guys who have fished 600 feet or so they've said. None has caught anything. Priest Lake, about 45 miles away has the best Lake Trout up here. I usually jig for them on bottom. They are usually on a ledge about 200 to 250 feet. Biggest one I've caught is just over 10 lbs, but they've caught some trophy ones out of there. Pend Oreille has had a bounty on Lake trout for the last few years, with no limit, and year round. They're trying to ge the kokanee reestablished. I've never really fished Cour D Alene Lake (I probably misspelled that). It's about 50 miles away, and the smallest of the three. There used to be some Chinook (I think) Salmon in there. I go to Koocanusa in Montana a lot, about 120 miles away, 90 some miles long, goes into Canada. It's overpopulated with Kokanee so the let you catch 50 a day and 100 in possession. You usually can limit too in a weekend. I usually get a special permit for Bull Trout there, it's one of the few places you can fish for them. I don't think I could throw even a 5 pounder back, so better safe than sorry. They also have Ling Cod in there, and a lot of nice Rainbows. As I say, I'm sort of spoiled, but blessed. And Then There's Flathead Lake in Montana about 200 miles away. Or I could go the other way to Lake Roosevelt in Washington State. Been meaning to go over there. These small lakes and rivers in the midwest where I am now, just don't look like much to me. I'm excluding the Great Lakes, Mississippi, and Missouri rivers. Not trying to put any are down, but just not what I'm used to.

Another weekend has came and gone, and nothing happened to the boat this weekend, as I'm in Bloomington, Indiana. Using the wife's laptop to type this. Next weekend I'll be in Scott's Bluff Nebraska. Hoping to get home to work on it the next thursday or friday.

Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

Finally got back from my trip on Wed night. Saw more tornadoes, thunderstorms, rain, and flooding then I ever want to again. I don't envy the people in the midwest. Especially this year. Some nice country, but not my cup of tea, especially the weather.
Got the other side panel put together, and both in the boat. Dash is installed, fuel tanks in, 2 of the 4 seats are in. Got an appointment for the guy to come down here to measure for the top to the boat. We had not been getting together, he had some family problems, but e-mailed us the day after we left to try to get started as he needed to make some money. He has to be down here tomorrow anyway, so is coming out with samples, his books on what he can do, and to measure it. I also got an electric motor ordered for it, and an isolator switch. Been wondering what size I needed, Bass Pro says 70 lb thrust, another site says 42 lb, and Iboats says 36. I have a 54 lb coming. Split the difference +. I've also got a lot of my chores caught up. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow. My wife wanted to take both cameras on the trip, and she put them both away after. Now if I can find where. Already been a good weekend for working, but I guess I've had an extra day.

Sounds like some great fishing out your way, and some nice lakes too.:)

Not sure what all the details are but when folks try to control what type of fish live in lakes it usually wastes a bunch of time and money. I hope they can figure this out and leave well enough alone.

Looking forward to seeing that rig in action:D

Amen to that. We used to have really good fishing here, until they started to manage it.

Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

Well another weekend came and gone. Things were going pretty good til today. I've got all my seats in, and fuel tanks, Some of the wiring, not all is done. Down to building the engine compartment, I'm not good at carpentry. And wiring, I don't like doing that either. Oh, and the guy didn't show about the top either today. I decided this afternoon to try to start the engine. It hasn't been started since middle of feb when I bought it. I put 8 gal of gas in one of the tanks, it's all I had here. Hooked up the battery, it had been on a 1 amp charge for 12 hrs yesterday. I couldn't find the water hookup the PO gave me when I bought the boat, but made another one that worked. Hooked it up. It just grunted. Battery terminals were starting to get hot. let it cool down. hooked the battery charger up at 40 amps, figured I'd save the 200 setting for awhile. And it fired right up. For about a minute, started blubbering and died. It would turn over fine even without the battery charger on it. Not getting any fuel. Gave it a whiff of ether and it started for a couple seconds, til the ether was gone and died. Sometimes I'm glad I'm dumber than I think I am. 2 1/2 hrs later I looked at the fuel switch, between tanks. The handle is not the pointer, the little nubbin on the other side is, I think. Time to pick up my tools then, so I hope that's the problem. When I put the fuel tanks in, it took me at least two hours looking for my fuel caps for the tanks too. Hoses hook to the tanks, and the caps are in the stern. Sometimes I really have brain farts, I guess. Maybe next weekend, if my trolling motor gets here, and the isolator switch for my second battery. I think I just have the engine compartment, wiring, coast guard numbers, and license to do to the boat. Then wiring, license, jack, and a couple other things to the trailer.

Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

Well, another weekend is basically over. Not sure if I will get a chance to do anything tomorrow. Spent most of friday and saturday going to and from town. Minimum of 1/12 hrs with traffic like it is, trip to get circuit breakers took over 4 hrs because of traffic. Got my trolling motor. Battery isolator didn't come in. It did the next day. I thought I had 6 or 8 circuit breakers, had 2 both 15 amp, needed 50 amp. Now I need to get some more hvy gauge wire. I was going to replace the hot wire from the battery to the starter selonoid, it's black, should be red. I've got 2, both too short. Maybe I'll just put red shrink tubing on both ends. Started fixing wiring, every 2 or 3 feet there's a slice, some with wire nuts, and a different color wire. I got frustrated and gave up. Battery stays up from Sunday night to Friday morning, but when I install it it starts loosing power. I hate wiring. I'm putting a marine battery in for starting, and a marine deep cycle for extended use for the trolling motor, with an isolater in between so my main starting battery doesn't get ran down. I'm told the two different types should be ok with an isolator separating them.
Built my engine cover like I wanted it. Now I have to rebuild it. 1 stinkin corner. Actually it's only 1 inch off, and will only take a different 2X2 and top back piece of 3/4 plywood, it's 17X31. I can just pick up and pull the steps off the tank and front cover. The 2 top pieces are the same way, and the side panels are put together with wing nuts. I should be able to totally dismantle it, except for the front frame in 5 minutes. I'll have to to get back to that wiring mess. Engine isn't getting enough fuel, I think to start when it's cold, automatic choke is on, but after you get it warmed up it fires right up and idles nice. If I prime the carb it fires right up fine. Ether it just runs on the ether and dies, for a while. Think I'll start changing the fuel filter, might need to adjust the idle. It acts like the choke isn't working, but it's closed like it should be for starting. Any other ideas.

Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

Fixed my engine cover this morning, then since I didn't know what I wanted to cover it with I bought some time. I used 3 almost empty cans of paint, different brands and colors, and then used white to finish making almost a quart. 2 coats on everything should keep most of the water out of the plywood. Wasn't too concerned with the color it turned out as I will be putting something else over it.
Yesterday I told the wife to come hear how good the engine runs and how quiet it was. It wouldn't start, nice and quiet. Primed the carb and it ran fine for a while and then started making a thumping sound. When I took my cover apart this morning, the driveline is no longer straight. Not sure what I broke, or hopefully something just came loose. The first pic was taken a few months ago, and the next two today. While normally I know nothing, about inboards and jet drives, multiply that. Anybody with any ideas.

Check to see if you have wobble in those u-joints, I am hoping that is all it is. If there is any slop in the u-joints at all then one or more have failed. If that is not the case, taking a stab in the dark I would say that you had a carrier bearing of some kind fail bud. I hope that is not the case in any way. A u-joint can fail like that, have done it in my truck that is how I know. Good luck with it.

U joint feels tight, no carrier bearing per se, goes straight into the jet drive where I believe there is a bearing. I'm suspicious of that bearing altho it would be hard to get to. This is my first inboard, and my first jet, it's like just a u joint between the engine and the drive.

U joint is fine, I started pulling it out, and the shaft going into the drive housing is very loose. Now I need to learn to be a contortionist to finish getting the u joint out so I can try to take the cap off, and shaft out of the housing to see what's what. You can see the housing in the first two pics above. Thanks for the ideas tho. There all appreciated. Just when I think it's about ready to get wet, something else happens. I will get it tho, even if I have to tow it with my other boat. Nobody here would believe a 16 ft Crestliner towing a 21 ft Starcraft.

Man I wish that I knew more about jet drives to help you out bud, but I know for a fact you know more than what I do. I know where they are and that is about it, well it sucks water in one end and shoots it out the other:D.

I will get it tho, even if I have to tow it with my other boat. Nobody here would believe a 16 ft Crestliner towing a 21 ft Starcraft.

That would be sacrilegious for that to happen. A tinny being towed by a glasser:eek::facepalm:

My Crestliner is a tinnie. It took me about 15 years to redo it, with a lot of modifications. 1961 16 foot basically 2 owner. After the guy that bought it new died, his son in law had it for a few years, trying to sell it, people tested it for a weekend or so, til I got it. It's the pic I use on here. Did most everything wrong in rebuilding it. Well, not most, but several.

You're right, not preferable. That's just my last resort. Hopefully friday I can get into it enough to know something.

Re: New owner 21 ft 74 Starcraft aluminum runabout jet

U joint is ok, it's a bearing or seal inside the drive housing. Pump and drive has been out of production for 20 years. I've talked with people who still work on them and they say no books. Can still get parts, but slow and made at a machine shop in Lewiston. I learned right after I got this Eliminator jet boat is top of the line and very spendy with a Berkley jet drive in it. Eliminator jet drive is different and out of business.
Be glad to see you when you are here. I know what you mean on alone time. I think that's why I like working on the boat so much. Hopefully I can find parts and be launched, but it could take awhile. I've also got other things I've got to get started on. Maybe it's telling me that. Fishings no good up here this year anyway I've heard.
