Re: New Silent CHOICE Exhaust system!

I do almost all of my boating there these days, and I have to say everyone can find something to love about Havasu. This time of year it is so wide open, and so few boats, and spectacular scenery. Quiet, and mid 70's on most days. You can get lost, or go to a nice dinner by boat. A wonderful lake where you just need to find your time and place. Sorry for the hijack.

I used to go there in the late 80's early 90s. I loved dropping off our chairs, coolers, tents, etc. and leaving that stuff there all weekend (except the coolers). However, I have never been there when it was quiet ;)....and Copper Canyon, very fond memories if you get my drift!

anyway..we digress!

I like silly hijacked threads, so no problem from me. Now if a couple of unnamed others come by...well let's just say we're at their mercy  :p :)

Surely you aren't suggesting that someone might take this as a SERIOUS dose of hateraid? LOL

So can this device be modified to fit JetSki's, or maybe used specifically for them?

The sound of a big block is inspiring, the loud sound of a giant mosquito no so.

absolutely..... meatheads who remove the water box from their ski should certainly not be spared

While we're at it let's add a 2 pass time out.... they CAN pass you in the water but if they come into say 300 feet of you more than once in 5 minutes you can shut their engine down from your boat for a 10 minute penalty... That should keep em moving on down the way instead of circling and or jumping your wake withing a few feet of the boat.

Is there extra hatred for the loud exhaust on the rivers?

Lake of the ozarks is a lot like havasu in regards to the big power boats. That's just how it is. Maybe it's because I grew up going there but I'll take the straight piped big blocks over the whine of a 2 stroke outboard.

I don't think it's a hatred as much as an expectation of common courtesy and I don't think it's limited to lakes or rivers or the water for that matter...... As time goes on people show less and less regard for others around them.

Someone made the comparison to aircraft.... mufflers on a 747 are not practical and would very seriously reduce the performance and range of the plane.... it just isn't so on the average boat..... There is just no good excuse for a weeny little 200 to even 500+ hp v8 to be 10 times as loud as a 1000 or more hp tugboat.

Can we do the same thing for Harleys? You can hear them a mile away just trying to get out of their driveway, yet a twice-as-powerful GoldWing is nearly silent. I know a few Harley riders that would love to silence their bikes while riding through serene areas, but can't/won't due to the social stigma surrounding them if they did...

Valid argument there. At the Ozarks we expect it and like it. Definitely other lakes around where I enjoy the peace and quite. I bought an I/O just to get rid of the 2 stroke outboard whine, not really a difference, just didn't like the noise of that outboard.

I'm a believer that loud pipes save lives on bikes when you are in traffic. I had a friend quite his down and then louden it back up because he felt he was getting merged into more frequently. He falls into the "I would love a silent choice option" crowd.

Personally I don't care for the noise while I'm under way. The quieter the better because after a 1/2 hour at cruising speed, it gets exhausting, (no pun intended) with wind, water and engine noises. Which is why I'm in love with the Pursuit SC365i and the Sea Ray 370 Venture. I heard that those boats are Q-U-I-E-T!

About 12 years ago I purchased my first "NEW" car. A Maxima SE. I decided to add a muffler system and cold air intake. That muffler system lasted about 6 months before I put the stock one back on and sold the custom muffler. Driving for hours with that "DRONING" in the background made me nuts.......IMO it's the same with boats if you're actually trying to get somewhere that has some distance.

Re: New Silent CHOICE Exhaust system!

Why is people who move next to the airport and complain about the noise get told "you knew airplanes were noisy before you moved in, dummy", but people who move next to water where they know noisy boats play get sympathy when THEY whine about the noise?

just sayin' ... ;)

My sentiments exactly. Nothing like creating more laws and government regulation just to appease a few people who dislike the sound of an open exhaust. I have no problem requiring a muffling system, but even a muffling system that exists above water is usually pretty loud as well. You could put a muffling system on the offshore guys and make them run in the center of the channel, and you'd still get a bunch of people on the shoreline getting all butthurt over it. Unless they are sitting at the dock for extended periods of time revving the engines, why not just let everyone be?

Next thing you know, someone will be mad that you are casting a line in front of their property and they'll enact a law that says you can't fish within 100yds of a residential property . . . then you're stuck out in the middle with those terrible boats with loud exhausts, lol.

Different strokes for different folks. If you do that, then we have to do something about all of those outboards screaming away at 7Krpms. That's like scoffing at an Indy 500 car because it isn't NASCAR despite Indy being decades far more advanced, lol.

Harley pretty much just exists for guys and their mid-life crisis. Most people that really know their stuff about bikes will ride any number of other brands (or customs) to get better performance for the buck. Harley has gotten better, but they are still pigs when it comes to most other bikes.

"Well, think about it. You're pushing 50, recently divorced, grossly overweight and going bald. What to do? Shave your head, buy a Harley and a leather jacket - suddenly you are a cool, badazz mutha. You buy into a lifestyle where you have instant notoriety, friendship and access to fat chix." <--- as told to me by one of my Harley-riding buddies.

I am not a rider, but I'm looking for a crises to find me...

Anyway... you can make a solid argument, and many riders do, that they are safer loud.

I don't think we need to COMPLETELY eliminate loud exhaust,

Why not? You can't cruise Main Street with your cut-outs open (even where cut-outs are legal), why should you be able to do so on my lake ... :mmph:

My buddy was at the local Harley dealership 2 years ago. THAT GUY had just bought a brand new road bike. Signed the paperwork and then just sat on it in the parking lot for 5 minutes with it running. Then he gunned the motor, dropped the clutch took off at Mach 7 through the parking lot, bounced between a car and truck, shot across the access road and landed in the ditch next to the highway. His response was "@$@#$#@! Guess I'm not ready for THAT."

How many first time boaters have you witnessed something like that happening?!
