Patience, patience and more patience really pay off in the end. You will find what you're looking for.

I'm trying, really I am. Ive been surfing all night and have found something.. What do you think of Blue Fin boats? They are well in the budget, aluminum and most are outboards. Size wise they are more useful for me as well. For a grand more I can be boating now? The ones 16ft and larger are all deep V with plenty of room, mid eightys, windshields, bow riders, i like em. They also seem plentiful. Perhaps I should move the tread? I really want a boat I can use now. I'd like to modify/restore/refit it this winter.

Not a thing wrong with the Blue Fin boats. If it has what you're looking for in size and capacities all the better,

I think with what's been posted already you should have a good idea what to look for in the major hull condition. Next question is what does it have for a powerplant? Merc, OMC, other?

I'm going to pass on this beauty. I've seen it in person and it is totally clean, it would make great resto project. It is water ready right now. Someone buy this. The owner is a great guy and his description is spot on.

Vintage 1958 Crestliner 14' Voyager runabout with Johnson 35 hp

I'm going to fins a boat that is bigger and better suited to want I think I want to do, ski, cruise with a group. So something over 16ft. Arrgh!

I've found another candidate, the GF and the neighbor and I are again heading to PA, it's a tin boat. I've talked with the owner and it seems to check out, newer boat. titles on bot trailer and boat in his name. Trailer seems to be in good shape.. Everything needs to be cleaned but if that old mercury purrs, I'm likely pulling it back home. All for the cost of my little 2014 Honda Grom.

I'll keep you informed...I hope this is the one, the GF is tired of me surfing craigslist and lurking on Iboats reading about motors I do not own yet. I told her, "baby its all your fault, if you hadn't taken me down to Fla and if we hadn't spent two days on a boat I wouldn't have remembered how much I love boating. Besides when I find the right boat and you are sunning in the bow looking hot in your bikini, I think you will forgive me." I got a smirk and a kiss...

Absolutely, that was a nice second boat for me. I thought about it and the advice ya'll gave to me. A little run about would be great fun but I want to take a group out possible 4-6 for the day. That boat wouldn't do that. I still want a vintage run about but for just a bit extra cash I'm going for the more useable option first.

I just bought a 1989 spectrum 1700 with a super clean rebuilt 79 mercury 80hp. The trailer is a 89 galvinized escort that was sold with the boat originally.

It isn't perfect but should be useable now. Everything is there. A cover the lights a Bimini the motor runs good. Interior is good a few cracks in the rear seats. One moist spot to the rear.

Pics to follow.

Re: New to forum, working on getting an aluminum resto project for first boat

So as this thread has in the title aluminum resto, I do need to do some work on this boat. The bottom of the boat has stains and a clear water line mark. What are some suggestions for cleaning this?

How about products of procedures for cleaning marine vinyl? Id like to remove some of the original graphic decals on the side of the boat, heat gun and plastic scraper?

Off to the DMV on Monday to start the paperwork. I sure Hope I can use it before I get my Virginia hull numbers.Off to West marine to look at things I will need. First on the list good two stoke oil. I'd like to have a fresh batch of gas in the boat.

Congrats highsider989, now the real fun begins. Washing/cleaning, investigating everything that may need some attention. Lose, broken, frayed wires, leaky fuel fittings, Trailer wheel bearings,

No matter what the seller told you I would go ahead and replace the water pump impellar. No telling just how old it is or what kind of shape it's in. I do this myself as a regular practice when I buy a used engine. Just cheap insurance. Also drain the gearcase and add new fluid. Watch for dicoloration and any shiney metal flakes. West Marine is kind of high but a good place to go look around to get ideas.

Yep, just got back from West marine. Great selection great, as in large, prices. One of the staff there was very helpful.

Good Idea about the impeller. I'll do that, so where do I look for the serial number on my Mercury motor. Its a 79 80HP. I will check out the lower as well. Where do I find a manual for it?

The interior of the boat is pretty good, I'll clean it up. I'll check all the wiring and I will also take some samples of foam. The floor seems mostly solid. There is one moist spot in the rear. I'll do this while i'm waiting for paperwork to go through the DMV and Department of Game an inland fisheries.

I need to take the boating safety course. All boaters in DC must have it. I'll be wanting to launch from gravely point sometimes so its a must plus more information never hurt.

The trailer is sound, galvanized, bearings good, replacing the winch strap, I'm going to rewire it, simple. I put new wheels and tires on it before I towed it home.

I think this is a good start. we shall see... so I already need more money...

Re: New to forum, working on getting an aluminum resto project for first boat

Wish I could me more help but I'm an OMC person myself so where exactly the plate for the model number is I'm at a loss.

I've had very good luck finding used but in ecellant condition manuals on ebay for almost all of those engines. Again I couldn't tell you how well that will work out for your Merc.
Now shine 'r up and have some fun with it.

P.S. Once there is a boat there is never enough money. Kinda like horses!

The transom clamp should have a plate on it, and the serial # should be listed. Or if you take the cowl's wrap around off, and the top clam shell off there should be a serial # stamped above the distributor mount (in the red box):
m650.jpg

Once you get the serial #, you can confirm that it's a 1979 80hp by comparing it to the this list.

A Mercury service manual will be helpful, evil-bay & online sources will likely have one.

Not sure if Mercury gauges are the same, but this tinny has a permanently mounted fuel cell/tank, not portables?
