Re: New to forum, working on getting an aluminum resto project for first boat
Congrats highsider989, now the real fun begins. Washing/cleaning, investigating everything that may need some attention. Lose, broken, frayed wires, leaky fuel fittings, Trailer wheel bearings,
No matter what the seller told you I would go ahead and replace the water pump impellar. No telling just how old it is or what kind of shape it's in. I do this myself as a regular practice when I buy a used engine. Just cheap insurance. Also drain the gearcase and add new fluid. Watch for dicoloration and any shiney metal flakes. West Marine is kind of high but a good place to go look around to get ideas.
Yep, just got back from West marine. Great selection great, as in large, prices. One of the staff there was very helpful.
Good Idea about the impeller. I'll do that, so where do I look for the serial number on my Mercury motor. Its a 79 80HP. I will check out the lower as well. Where do I find a manual for it?
The interior of the boat is pretty good, I'll clean it up. I'll check all the wiring and I will also take some samples of foam. The floor seems mostly solid. There is one moist spot in the rear. I'll do this while i'm waiting for paperwork to go through the DMV and Department of Game an inland fisheries.
I need to take the boating safety course. All boaters in DC must have it. I'll be wanting to launch from gravely point sometimes so its a must plus more information never hurt.
The trailer is sound, galvanized, bearings good, replacing the winch strap, I'm going to rewire it, simple. I put new wheels and tires on it before I towed it home.
I think this is a good start. we shall see... so I already need more money...
