No water to engine after new impeller. MC-1

Any ideas here will be greatly appreciated.

While chasing an engine miss at idle, I did a bonehead thing and ran the engine for a few minutes without turning on the water to the muffs. Running again with water showed no water out the exhaust, so I assumed the impeller was toast. I installed a new one this morning and still have no water to the engine with water present at the muffs. The old impeller appears completely intact other than it appears to have gotten pretty warm. No chunks or other pieces missing. The new one is a Sierra 18-3017.

I did use a lttle grease to aid installing the impeller--is that an issue?
I am 99.9% sure the riser tube from the water pump is properly seated.

Outdrive is MC-1 #3392031 without the rib in the ends of the drive bellows. Engine is 250 L6, rebuilt.

(The engine miss turned out to be a loose porcelain insulator in a spark plug--a first. It now idles very well.)

Thanks!

One thing to look at is the water running out from the side of the muffs with the engine not running. Have someone start the engine and see if the amount of water flowing out from the sides drops. If it does, then the impeller is pulling water in... If it's not getting to the exhaust, then it's going somewhere.... :D

The housing/cover seemed fine; the locknuts had been hot, though, and the plastic had oozed a bit. I guess a new pump would be the safer route to take.

I would think that you would have water out of the exhaust without the motor running with house water pressure. Maybe pull the thermostat housing and see if your getting water that far.

If it oozed it is shot. You guessed right! Go with OEM for the new pump housing.

The water will not get past the impeller with hose pressure if everything is correct without the engine running.

If water is passing the impeller without the engine running, the impeller is shot... NO water should be coming from the pump UNLESS it's turning.

Entire housing. Whoopsy. I remember when I learned that lesson.

When I initially started it after putting in this impeller, I pulled the hose from the thermostat housing to allow any debris to purge. No water at all. Curiously, I have found that air can easily be blown back through this hose into the outdrive--no resistance at all. Perhaps the riser tube did not enter the alignment tube after all.

Thanks Chris. I plan to do just that before pulling the lower unit again. I'll have another person start th engine while I watch the activity at the muffs. Russ

You'll know when you start the engine on muffs.... if the tube is not connected to the upper properly, all your water will come out of the prop. If you are getting flow to the engine, it should come out of the idle relief ports, and as Chris said, when you start the engine, you should see a significant drop in leakage past the sides of the muffs.

I ran it briefly and that was the result--water out the exhaust. Pulling the lower unit confirmed the riser was not where it was supposed to be. I reassembled and now have cooling water at the engine! :D

Thanks!
