Re: OB vs IB

Wise man says remove battery and leave on a trickel charger thru the winter. Suggestion I always have a booster Batt in the boat in case a battery fails. Also one in each Auto, you never know when you might need it or even to help someone else.

Remember to vent engine compartment of gas fumes as they can explode, thats why I Like an outboard better.

I hate explosions, especially when I am on the boat that is doing the exploding.....now I am back to hating I/O again...I can just use the 140 quart cooler instead of the dog house

Another strike against I/O's... Was ready to swap out the gimbal bearing today and found the gimbal housing needs to be replaced. Guess how much a new mercruiser one costs? $1,200. Good thing I have a spare laying around! Looks like you can buy a used one on ebay for a couple hundred bucks.

Yah right. The cost of a semi major repair on an OB is where they really shine by comparison, eh!
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Re: OB vs IB

never had to replace a gimbal thingy before on my outboard....just a thought..my outboards have given me many years of reliable service with minimal repairs, and if I wanted to get a bigger motor for my boat it was not a big deal...sell my old motor..buy a good used larger motor for about the same price I sold my smaller motor..and about 4 hours of labor...had to buy nothing else...and bam I went from 120 HP to 150 for less than $350..might could have done it at cost neutral if i was more patient...runs like a half skined cat...cranks and runs out every time i turn the key, except once when the starter went bad..took 15 mins labor to remove and reinstall..rebuild cost was $45

I'm just saying if we're talking about a brand new repower comparisons I think this $1,200 gimbal housing should be included in the price. We gotta be fair here, us OB guys need to make up about 4 grand somewhere. ;)

Nah, I'd rather fight dirty! You know, throw in a "fish hook" now and then...

I figured as much :D... As to my deciding factor, I would prefer a setup that does could not cause my boat to sink. Broken bellow let in water (I know from experience). I'm pretty careful when it comes to maintenance, but I lean towards the power option that would just not run when not taking care, not cause my boat to slowly sink or buy another bilge pump!

so it sounds like we're all in agreement: if you're not going to maintain it as needed, buy an OB cuz an I/O will sink your boat:eek::p

darn shame the way that rubber bellows rots just overnight without any warning signs that it's getting old and hardened......;)
