I don.t know what you are reading about a shift button but there were obviously different methods of shifting an electric shift outdrive. All it takes is a switch, whether it be via button or lever. So accept the fact, assume your drive is the same year as your boat and call a knowledgeable vendor to choose the right rebuild/reseal/impeller kit. If you can't find one I can give you a number of someone who can. However the last thing I would want you to do is pump him for information then go buy it from someone else.
If you must persist in ignoring opinions based on the photo you published, try to find shift cables. If you look between the intermediate housing and the upper drive you will see relatively thin wire traversing the distance. NO THICK CABLE.
