Here's one style, for ice fishing. This is what I use. I believe it's a Polar tip up.. Drill the hole, set it in like the pic. When a fish grabs the line, it spins the reel releasing the flag and you know it's "fish on"! I thought everyone in the northwoods knew what's a tip up....

Well, thank God! The majority of the storm went east. We only received 4/5". Schools across NW WI were closed today. We lost power again in the wee hours just like the last storm. Out for a handful of hours. Only plowed paved drives. Sun's out and last nites snow is melting fast. This is one happy camper.....

Hopefully, I wont have to post anymore potential snowstorm totals this season..... Please, please, please no more snow.......

Good info Wimusky....cool 'fish on' device!! I'd heard about them but I had never seen one...at least not like that. As for the snow/ice stuff....yeah, out here in Victoria we generally are 'exempt'. We had no snow, no ice...fairly average winter for us. I think we got down to zero a couple of times, but that was about it. Ice fishing is a complete unknown entity here.......people have no idea as to how that works around these parts.
As a result, and on the downside, as a warmer climatee we don't get all the good winter sports that you get guys get around the great lakes. ie: snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice racing, outdoor rinks, etc....let along the sugarbush advantage.
I used to live in Ontario (t'udder side of the G-lakes from you guys) and I still miss a lot of that style of winter.
Out here in Victoria....I'm already on the need for my 4th grass cutting of the year over the next couple of evenings.

Here's one waiting for a fish to bite. They work great! We use them for walleyes, northerns and largemouth bass. And if I'm really lazy, I "metro" fish. Set out a bunch of tip ups and sit in the truck with the radio on, Musky Hunter mag and snacks. Just need to start the truck every now and then to stay toasty while waiting for a "flag"..........

To be honest, grass cutting sounds pretty good right now.....

Well....we might be even on this one Wimusky. Being an ex-Ontario (winter type) guy....Ice fishing sounds pretty good to me right now (LOL)...my buddies back there are just wrapping that up!
I loved those winter sports and miss 'em!

um where i live the ice has been gone for a few few weeks now.
yesterday i saw about a dozen boats on the st-lawrence fishing and it was about 62 degrees
im going fishing on the boat saturday i feel for you americans

The last time I went ice fishing near Lake Placid NY we really "metro fished!". The house they drug out on the lake had a generator, TV, heat, card table and bunks. Oh yeah, an electric auger to clear the holes too! Set the tip-ups with bells and enjoy the weekend. Really beats shivering while your butt freezes to the bucket!!!!

At nite we use lights that clip on the flag shaft. Look like cigarette lighters. When the flag pops up a red light blinks. Kinda cool.

There's a bunch of fancy houses out here too. It's amazing how much $ people stick into those places.....

Wow, we're gonna skip all the temps from 46 and 61. Jumping straight to a high of 62 tomorrow, 66-70 through Monday.
I think that means spring has finally arrived, here anyways.

Most of the snow around here has melted slowly, from the bottom up, so no flooding.
But that area around WIMUSKY is likely to fill the St Croix and Mississippi.

Leaving town sounds like the best idea......

The NWS is talking 6 - 12" for us. It's snowing now and looks like a thin band of snow from the southwest will be hitting us for a while... If it's closer to 12" than 6" I'll have no choice but to plow at least the residents..... Cabins, I'll wait for a call if any. Fishing opener Sat. People may flock to their cabins starting tomorrow.... Not sure if the ice is out. It was very dark yesterday....

The record for May in Duluth is 3". That record may fall.....

not far off here either .lake superior makes a great crappy weather diverter.mind you 40 miles north theres still 3 feet or so on lots of lakes but their breaking up fast now.
