Re: OMG , i need help , BIG TIME !!! 1985 invader deck,hull ???

I finally got to take the measurements on the ski locker cover.

Wood area: 38 3/4 in X 12 in
Metal "support": 39 1/2 in X 12 1/2 in

It looks like the part of the metal pieces that actually supported the wood laid on top of each other with the long piece (39 1/2) laying on top of the short piece (12 1/2 in). Unfortunately all of this was disassembled when I bought my boat so I'm not 100% sure that this information is correct, but its the best that I can figure out.

Here is a picture of what mine looks like roughly pieced together:
IMG_0506.jpg

There should be one more hole catty-corner (or diagonally) from the one in the picture.

And here are some websites I've used as picture references.

middle stringer.JPGmiddle stringer2.jpgtransom1.JPGtransom2.JPGtransom3.JPGso ques. #3 is i found out the "middle stringer i dont think its a stringer probably just some support " is little soft on one side {please see pic. #1 and #2 } and i was thinking i can take it out all the way and put back a pvc pipe straight to the bilge would that work ?

ques.#4 is about the transom . the transom looks really solid ,looks like somebody was repairing it {rest pic.} but anyway i would like to check that . So is there any safe way how to do that ?

thank you ...

Re: Older boat questions ...

I'll try to answer your questions...

#1 You will need to sand the old glass untill it's clean....you will see a change in the color.

#2 The corners of the transom look to be a corner support.... If they are solid and not needed to be replaced butt the new deck to them and you will tab the deck to them.

#3 Running down the center-line of your boat is the keel..... If it has rot it will need to be replaced with wood and glassed back in....

#4 To check the transom for rot... 3/8" drill bit with a piece of tape about 3/4" from the tip as a gauge.... drill into the transom in a few places starting low and working up.... Look at the wood chips....Dry white chips are good.....Damp/wet dark brown/black no good.

Do NOT drill through the outer skin of the hull! If all is good with the transom you will fill the drill holes with thickened resin.

Nice , thanks for quick info , just wanna be shure the corners of transom are solid well even the deck under then is solid but i dont really understant butting :) is that when u put 2 boards Exactly next to each another ? Without folding no screws ?*

And the keel is Pretty thick so should put there 2 plywoods like the transom ? Or can i use some kind of board ?*

I know ive got weird questions but first time working on the boat :)*

Re: Older boat questions ...

Yes butting would be next to eachother.....if you really want ,you coud remove the corners....run your deck, then install the corners back in place or make new ones.

See what the thickness of the keel is and match it..... It could be 2 pieces of plywood glued together with a waterproof glue and glassed in.

Re: Older boat questions ...

Hey guys iam back :)*
So i think i will try change my keel this weekend and also i made my ATACK PLAN . Please check it out and let me know if i should *change something or if i am doing something wrong . Thx.*
1-take the old keel out , sand the old FG , PB and wash it out with acetone .*
2- cut the wood ( i thing yellow pine is good choice ) , put resin on it and let it cure .*
3- fill the ground with PL ADHESIVE BEDDING and put the wood in the place with few bricks so the board is in the place really good and let it cure .*
4- make some peanut butter and fill the sides around it *and let it cured .
5- resin , first csm hs 1.5 oz , resin again and second csm hd 1.5 oz and resin .*
6 - all done ?*

So this is my plan but i still got few question : how many covers of resin should i put on the board when its still out ?*

And do i have to sand the first layer of csm ?*

Re: Older boat questions ...

Plan sounds good... A good coat of resin on the raw wood is fine.... no need to sand the first layer of csm.....you can wet out both layers at one time if you want.

The pics and descriptions I see and hear indicate to me a complete transom replacement.

Ok, I was thinking to use SeaCat but the wood in my transom is not really rotten ,just the bottom . also I don't have any inner FB skin ,just plywood . So I don't really know what to do now , also I would love to keep the outer skin in a place .
I can work from inside the boat , everything is clean up and gone ...
So please let me know if you got any idea anyway I might use just plywood again .

Re: Older boat questions ...

Any Foam? All the stringers should have Weep holes drilled in the bottoms of the stringers (an sealed with resin or cut an glue 1" pieces of PVC pipe) at various points to allow water to drain back to and into the bilge.

no foam yet ... stringers are not glued yet ...

well ive got only 2 stringers and 4 bulkheads so every section must have a hole so the water from all sections must go to the bilge ??
