Also I still haven't gotten all the milky oil out. I've got a drill pump and its just not cutting it. It seems to be too thick. I'm afraid to run the engine long enough to heat up the oil. What should I do?

At this point that hardly matters since the block is toast. For the future, throw that drill pump in the garbage can and buy a pump that threads onto the garden hose fitting on top of the dipstick.

The fact that you heard the hiss from the vent hose confirms you have a crack from the water jacket internal to the engine.

Sorry about that! Time to look for a new block.
Well, that sucks. Time to start reading the engine swap threads.

That's not going to make much difference, but is always good to know if it turns out not to be cracked... Taking the exhaust manifolds off may help you find the crack.. May not.. Good luck.. Does your boat even have a heat exchanger?? if not.. Introduce your air to the larger hose coming from the rear that comes off the power steering cooler.. Plug the ones that run to the exaust manifolds or connect them together.. Make sure you got everything tight..It will leak the air at your fittings if not..

BTW the starcraft guys would love to have that rig.. You spent a lot on a unproven boat but too late to go there.. It's worth a fix... Fresh water boat?

Yes freshwater. No heat exchanger. trying to squeeze every ounce of encouragement out of your last statement "It's worth a fix..." as possible right now. Pretty disappointing intro to boating. Must be payback for when I blew up an engine on our 66 mustang as a teenager and my dad had to rebuild it with me handing him wrenches while he muttered under his breath. LOL. He bought a short block. I'm going to get a long block though and save some grief. :) Rapido anyone?

Rapido will sure be the likely the easiest with a warranty shipped to you door... The price is pretty fair and a lota folks on here have had great luck with them..

Whew you are about to get all kinda boat repair educated... Do you got a repair book on this thing? If not get one.. Spend the extra and buy a factory OMC.. They are night and day better than the other junk and will so help you out on this adventure..

Might a well yank the outdrive and the engine out.. It's alot easier than it looks. Get a alignment tool.. The ebay one works good for $35..

Then again.. If you got the cash.. You can always pay someone to install a new long block..

I always find my own work carries a better quality..

It only takes 15 minutes to drain the water from the engine on a boat.. That's pretty depressing huh?

For me to see where the leak is coming from I'm assuming i now need to pull the valve covers and examine, which means i probably need to pull the exhaust manifold "bat wings" cause they kinda are in the way of getting the valve covers off.

Will likely be cracked in the valley(but could be somewhere else. It doesn't make much difference).. Seems to be where the 4.3 likes to bust.. That is also why you hear the air equally on both sides.. You are not going to be able to repair the crack so might as well not worry with trying to hunt it down..

Would you be considering an alternative if this were you and you were strapped for $$? I probably should investigate getting a salvage short block or something in spirit of penny pinching.

Downloaded the pdf version that's floating around...i think it's a clymers? Recommendation noted.

Going to start a new thread for engine swap. This one started about cooling and has degraded to a cracked block. Thanks again every one.
