There is a 800 stringer upper gear box on E bay right now,It said it was used in fresh water only. last bid was $355.00.

Ow beef one thing on your question. Yes you can remove the lower with the cable still attached. I took the four bolts off the top and lowered the lower just enough to clear and then swung it the left and set it on top of a ice chest I know it sound's silly but it was the perfect height to set it on. I then used a tie down and tied it to the boat so it wouldnt move. chiefalen has that nailed.
I also see how you can remove the whole drive and do the same thing.
Doing it this way makes doing the water impeller a snap.

Sorry dont mean to hijack your post,(1984 omc 3.8 v6)but i have the same exact problem. i was out one day on the river which i should have never done, but the prop hit some rocks and i shut engine of while going about 20mph, raised outdrive to let drift back to deeper water and went in. went out a few days later and while crusing about 25 boat quit moving no - reverse either. got towed back in to dock and boat never overheated also shuff off as soon as it happened. prop will spin freely in neutral and wont move in forward direction went shifted to foward and will ratchet in reverse(doing by hand engine not running). and vice-versa when shifted to reverse. i thought maybe it was shift clutch dog pin that maybe was sheared off in lower unit. but reading this post i think i may have same problem. but i will try pulling lower unit to access water pump shaft. any other tips anyone can provide me?

you guys were right, same problem shaft was stripped looks like shaft 47 may be a little also, how do i determine how much is too much. or best just to replace both how hard is it to replace 47 and how do i remove it.

Well I got my upper off and all apart. just waiting for parts. I got the new water impeller shaft orderd and a new upper shaft orderd. When all the parts get here I will throw it back togather and we will see what happens.

Patience it's in the mail. Bearing carrier, gear, bearing that goes on the carrier,complete ball gear with end bearing assy. All put together ready to be installed.
