Re: Omc Cobra Outdrive

I was told by a 30 year pro that the way to winterize the water passages in a Cobra drive is to pour antifreeze into the water supply hose from the drive (usually at the thermostat housing) until it comes out of the water intakes on the drive. Sure beats truing to get those screws out.

Thats the way i always done it.I never removed those screws..
Drained the block, manifolds and PS cooler then filled all the hoses with AF until it runs out of the drive....easy..;)

I would take it to a radiator repair shop and see if they can fix it.
Not sure if you can get by without one.

Is that what that thing is? I have a 1990 Chriscraft 198 Concept and there was tube about 3" in diameter and 8-10" long that froze one year. It was way behind the engine and I had to pull half the boat apart to get to it. Once it was out, the guy at the marina who told me what to do tapped on it with a hammer for a while and resoldered one end of it. I put it back on and it was good as new. Under the black paint it is all copper.

Yes, that is the power steering cooler, and at times they can be mounted in very hard to reach places. You may want to relocate it along the underside of one of the exhaust manifolds - along the block. Some engines have them mounted there.

Its on there for a reason...i would fix it or replace it rather than taking the chance of running without it.

Your Buds don't know what they're talking about....

If the boat has P/Steering,..... It has a Cooler...

Re: Omc Cobra Outdrive

OK, I just got off the phone with one of them, he said one of his boats does not have a cooler, the other one does not they both have power steering. im on the other guys boat right now. NO COOLER for the p. steering. Well, turns out that my bud's do know what they are talking about, cause these two boats do not have p. steering cooler, on e of them DO. All im asking is "do you need to have one" he has owned this boat for 9 years, and is runnig it w/o a cooler, he sais he has never had a problem with the power steering. I am going to get mine fixed, i just wanted to know if you need one. But thanks for the advice! Bryan

The way I figure it, if they could have gotten away without it, they would have. This way they could make more money. Instead, they decided they needed it, so gave up some profit to put one in.

I am keeping mine, no matter what a pain it is to get at and fix.

On the right side near the bottom is big screw. thats the drain plug. The one near the top is the fill plug BUT fill it from the BOTTOM, not the top.

Besides this being a 2 year old thread, you just gave wrong info about filling a Cobra drive. They get filled from the middle plug.
