have a 1976 Viking Deck Boat with a ford small block and an OMC sterndrive (stringer??). From what i have been told by the previous owner, the sterndrive is shot. Aside from rebuilding this sterndrive, is there another sterndrive that i can use??

thanks

Title corrections...should say "replacement" not "placement"

Ayuh,...

Your Choices are to rebuild what you have,...
Find another 35 year old drive,+ rebuild it,....
Or,....
Junk out Everything, glass in the Hole,+ move on to a Mercruiser or Volvo power...

No,... Mercruiser,+ Volvo are the 2 motor/ outdrive manufacturers left...

I've seen several boats converted to Outboards,... None were Sucessful...

No he means to repower it with a mercruiser engine and mercruiser outdrive. OMC has been out of business for over 10 yrs.

The OMC cutout in the hole is much different from the standard cutout used by the Merc/Volvo units. The easiest solution would be to redo the transom by creating a new fiberglass skin, then making the cutout to fit a Merc/Volvo outdrive.

In any case, how have you verified that the unit is toast?

Re: OMC sterndrive placement options??

The below was taken from the SEI thread...

"No, we are not working on any Volvo compatable drives at this time, however we do have a new product coming out soon for OMC powered boats. This new patent pending product will convert OMC Cobra drives to a SE116 drive. We do this with a conversion kit that changes out the bell housing and other related parts.

This kit will be available mid summer."

will convert OMC Cobra drives

Ayuh,... This thread is about OMC Stringer drives... No Joy there for mrdjflores....

The Easiest, Cheapest way to give new Life to the hull is to buy a Donor Boat with the driveline you Want,...
And Junk it out for the parts....

as part of my curious nature and engineering background...i decided to play around with the stringer outfrive and motor before i started taking it all out....and much to my surprise..the outdrivr worked and shifted through forward and reverse fine!!!

but i'm still gonna yank them outta the boat. found a couple donor's i can choose from...one with a merc350 and another with a merc470...decisions decisions....

Nope,.... A 470 is Not even an Option.....
It's Merc's redheaded bastard stepchild equivalent of the OMC Stringers, only Worse......

okay...down to one donor then...of course...i do have a nice 1200 horse 427 stroker (351w, bored and stroked) with twin chargers on it that would go nice in a boat...probably end up thrashing the hull into a million pieces though....but would be cool to put it in...hahaha

Re: OMC sterndrive placement options??

well...the donor boat with the merc 350 has everything but the engine itself...has all the controls, steering, electrical, outdrive, mounts, plates...everything...but the engine....

Heck,If the stringer still works i would get through this season with it.Do the rebuild this fall.
You are looking at a ton of work converting a stringer drive boat to a merc.
