After you're done for the season, lower your outboard as low as you can, to drain all the water out, change your lower unit oil, maybe remove the prop and cover the shaft. Not really much to an outboard and winter.

outboards don't need winterizing (as long as no water is in there).

After you get done with it, turn the mtr over a couple times to get the water out of the impeller.

Thanks, Maybe this was a four stroke?
A 4 stroke doesn't need winterized either.....

It's all about the orientation of the motor. Outboards are mounted vertically....water drains from the block by gravity. I/O motors are mounted horizontally.....water doesn't drain from block

I don't know what this guy was up to, he had RV anti freeze in a bucket and was running it into the water pump. Was on u-tube video. I don't know how to post link of this.

The smartest thing to do is simply read the owner's manual. They all have a section on "Off-season storage". If you don't have one, buy one. They are cheap!.

Some older I/O manuals suggest anti-freeze for "extra protection", but I never saw an OB manual that suggested it.

OBs DO need "winterizing", or as they say "service for off season storage". Fogging is always recommended, but as you can see nobody here agrees witk that manufacturer's recommendation.

Nevertheless, if your boat will hit freezing temperatures you better at the very least change the gear oil. If there was water intrusion and you don't, you'll need a new gearcase in the Spring. Easy to tell.....There will be a puddle of oil under the motor, coming from the crack where the water froze.

Re: Out board winterizing

Just fogged my '87 Force 50 today. It was so easy, I feel like a fool that I paid someone to do it last winter. I watched a few 'how-to's' on YouTube, and gave it a go. Next up, I'll change the oil in the lower unit, cover it and move it out of the garage...

I never knew a case where air froze up a motor. And a modern 4 stroke or 2 stroke drains the water out automatically.

It's inboards and inboard-outboard motors that require coolants to be drained. And most every engine replacement is a matter of being frozen--anywhere north of Florida.

Not sure which is the drain screw on my 77 Johnson 115. I fogged her today and changed the gear oil, but didn't want to start turning screws on the carbs and end up messing something up. Can anyone point me in the right direction since the manual isn't helping me out?

just because somebody does something on youtube does not make it right.watched a guy show off a motor on the tube running it without any water and reving the snot out of it .lots of folks commented on how dumb that was but you couldn't tell that numbskull he was wrong.bet that motor had a short life.

Scott, It is not necessary to drain the carbs on your motor. Simply run her on some fuel with a stabilizer and fog her until she stalls. Then let water drain and change the gear oil. Hit the grease fittings, and grease the steering. Charge and disconnect the battery.

Re: Out board winterizing

Is there a place to grease the steering near the wheel, or is it only the 1 zirc fitting near the outboard

Re: Out board winterizing

no, just clean and regrease the steering rod near the motor. Your motor should have at least two zercs as well, 1 each for tilt and for steering pivots.

Might as well just change it out if you're going that far

If you're in there, you should put a new impeller in. You can check the plate and the pump house for groves and re-use those if they are ok, but change the rubber.
