Owning and operating a boat is never going to be cheep. its a fact you get used to or move on to some thing else. Its why crags list is full of crap boats.

There's the key to your problem. You don't have the knowledge or experience. He does. In my book, that knowledge and experience is worth a hell of a lot and he deserves to be paid for it.

How many here run to Marine US or other retail marine stores to buy basic supplies to do the shade tree work? Not many I bet, its because we know the mark up is very high, and for the most part, other sources can offer better pricing. I agree it takes $$ to keep the lights on, and I don't fault any of the mechanics or shops. I do pride myself in doing most of my own work, but I also know when to take certain projects to the experts, and I don't have an issue with them making a living either. My money tree is still growing but I still won't just give $$ away when I can do most of my own stuff. Heck that is why I frequent this site, to learn.
When you run a bigger rig, you are at the mercy of whatever there is local to your boat, and that is when it can get expensive. Men and boys, and the price of their toys, right? I like the trailer size boats for this very reason, and many others too.

Here is MY experience with the "professionals" at the stealership.......

Many years ago I needs new bellows on my 1978 mercruiser....

I asked for a parts quote, a labor quote, and if it was something a shade tree mechanic with a factory service manual who could rebuild car engines easily could handle.

I was quoted $1000 for parts, $1000 for labor, and told no way I could do it without specialized training and tools....


I went home and bought oem parts, and a tool online for $300 and did the job myself in under 2 hours.

They flat out lied to me!

weather its in your book my book or the good book, his knowledge is worth the $105 an hour he charges for labor.

Found a great shop and they are at my marina. I give them everything. It pays in the long run. Needed a part that would be easy to do myself or 15 minutes for them. Told them to order the part ~ never questioned the cost. Went to the boat and a mechanic was leaving. he simply stated "the part came in and I had a minute, you are ready to go". Never received a charge. I have a boat to USE, not to work on.

I bought the exact same Sierra set of gear parts as the shop was going to buy. I can accept fully willing to pay $105 an hour for labor but not them making $500 on parts.

No your not, its all just a very new way of thinking. Parts cost what they cost, labor at a shop is what it is. Very few people use a boat for work so its a pleasure thing. Now that being said you need to view it as a hobby you or the family can enjoy. I raised mine out on the lakes and rivers, it sure beats taking them out to public places with the hood rats and other mal contents or you can spend time out at a sand bar swimming and grilling, your choice.

A question we are often asked is "which is better… OEM or Aftermarket parts?"

When you take your boat to the dealership's service department for repairs you're probably getting Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) engine parts. However, if you take your boat to an independent shop, you'll most likely get aftermarket parts. Is there anything wrong with that? Does a less expensive part mean a part that's lesser quality? And in what situations should you use only OEM parts?

An aftermarket part is any part that is not sourced from the engine manufacturer. Notice I did not say "made by the engine manufacturer", because in many cases the OEMs are sourcing parts from other vendors in the same way the aftermarket companies do. All the major aftermarket manufacturers make parts designed to function as well or better than the original, they will "meet or exceed" the design specifications of the original part. If the aftermarket part is a direct replacement of the original part it will not void your engine warranty.

Humans are a crazy bunch..... they will spend an unlimited amount of money on something they really like..... but will raise cain
when the A/C in their house breaks and the technician comes out.....or plumber or electrician....or the boat shop!

but when we need to make a phone call we don't go to the payphone anymore, but we still need the phone company, when we need gas we don't use the full service gas attendant anymore but we still need the gas station. so when we need a repair we don't need a parts scalper anymore but we still need the mechanic..

So find the mechanic thats willing to do the job with your parts or do it yourself.
Avanti, Might I ask what you do or a living so we can all tell you that you are charging too much for what YOU do?

IMHO this one has run it's course....

O/P, question asked and answered.... YES it is common to greatly mark up parts... No need to keep stressing over it... Your mechanic is NOT gonna read this and drop the price for ya and the dealer minded here aren't going to ever agree with you


Everyone else.... No need to bash the guy.... He feels that he's getting gouged ( I think so too) and has EVERY right to feel that way.... That is what makes a capitalist economy function... the balance of supply and demand..... If EVERY customer blindly agreed to pay whatever the shop asked EVERY time the prices would rise faster than you could keep track of them.

I don't think he is getting gouged. He needs the forward gear, the reverse gear and the dog clutch. That runs around $700(list price). $250 won't even buy the forward gear and pinion with Sierra. There is no markup going on at all.

Ever time i have had UL work done its expensive and after the first time i bought the tools and a manual and learned to do it my self.

I have never owned a brand new motor so i have used a lot of Sierra parts and never had a problem with them. In fact as a guess a lot are made by them as OEM or at least Sierra picks them up later. I am very glad their around to keep the old motors running.
