Re: Passion

Carp, I and my wife led a a Christian youth group all last year and some of the bibles the teens have are very very good. They are written in a way as to help the layman understand what God is trying to teach through his word. Get a teen study bible. I hope this helps.

Re: Passion

Carpy,
Raised a Catholic and born again two years ago. God brought me a wonderful woman and she brought me to God. Catholics don't read the Bible and growing up as an altar boy I remember the stations of the cross but they don't really convey the message either. I saw the movie and it troubled me. I couldn't believe it was really that violent in truth. I believe now. I didn't cry at the movie; I was too stunned. But your post, Carphunter, brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Brother and God Bless you and your family. Thank you SW it's always a joy and a source of strength to read your posts. Jesus died for me and I will be Eternally grateful.

ps: Try an NIV Bible. They are written in every day language.

Re: Passion

A thougt about translations. IT'S GOD'S WORD. He wouldn't allow it to be translated incorrectly!

Matt,

The same way you and I created and fostered slavery. :)

Actually we = sinners/mankind. It's not really personal. ;)

Re: Passion

It's semantics matttt. One way to put it is as Jesus put it; "I lay down my life, because I am able to take it up again" and "no greater love hath any man than to lay down His life for His friends." This is saying that Jesus willingly went to the cross to wash our sins with his blood, the last and ONLY perfect blood sacrifice for God.

Another to say the same thing, but to internalize it with ones self is to say "I killed Jesus, my sin killed him" because he had to shed his blood in order to cleanse me of my own filth, so that I can enter Heaven and stand before God in a spotless white attire.

Re: Passion

ok, soulwinner, no disresepct here. just trying to understand your thoughts.

"I lay down my life, because I am able to take it up again" and "no greater love hath any man than to lay down His life for His friends."

how does that translate to jesus dying for our sins? i see it more as sacraficing your life for someone else. something soldiers, sailors, police, and firemen do all the time.

i was raised catholic but don't practice. just never understood the whole jesus thing. if he was the son of god and went through what he did, i can understand how you could say he died while forgiving his executioners. but how do you make the jump to him saving all of us from sin? i miss that part.

Re: Passion

mattttt, If you don't mind, I will attempt to explain, at least the way I understand it.
To go to heaven one must be like the Father. God is perfect, and he realized that people were not perfect, so nobody would end up in heaven. He sent Jesus to Earth first to teach us how to live by Gods word, and second to bear the sins of mankind, so in essence, a person could sin, and if that person repented for those sins in his heart, then the path to heaven would be open for him/her.
So imagine it like this, Jesus was perfect and without sin. Because God loves us so much, he sent his Son to Earth to shoulder the sins of all mankind. That means every sin that will ever be committed by every human that will ever walk the Earth. I am not one to quote scriptures, but I loved the story of one of the thieves on the cross next to Jesus. Heres a fella who hadn't done anything right in his life. He was a thief, and put up on the cross to die. In the last moments of his life, he believed and repented for his sins in life. (Again, Soulwinner can probably quote exactly what was said), but basically Jesus said to him, that he would now join him in paradise. In those last moments of his life, in his heart he became a Christian.
Anyway, many people have asked me why Jesus was beaten so bad, and again my explanation was always this. If Jesus was just put up on the cross, and we were told that he died for our sins, the message might not have been quite as clear. God had to show us just a small portion of the suffering that Jesus had to endure by shouldering the sins of humanity. Many people when they watch the movie seem to concentrate on the beatings that Jesus endured. The real suffering for Jesus was the sins that he carried on his shoulders alone. One cannot fathom what it would be like to shoulder the sins of mankind.
When Jesus cried out to God from the cross, "Father, why have you forsaken me"? At that moment, even God could not look at Jesus, for all he saw was the sins of all mankind.

So, Jesus died for our sins. As Soulwinner said we all killed Jesus. The gift that was given us cannot be ignored. That gift is eternal life in paradise at Gods side.

I hope through my "layman's" way of explaining this it has helped you understand. I am learning more everyday and look forward to sharing with everyone.

Have a nice day. :)

Re: Passion

Awesome Carpy :) Very VERY good! I would add to this that God demanded from Moses a blood sacrifice to cover the sins of Israel when He handed down the Law. One sacrifice was a spotless lamb. This is why Jesus is referred to as "the Lamb of God." God would not accept a sacrifice that had a blemish, thusly Jesus live a sinless, and therefore spotless life. Only this "perfect" sacrifice could absolve the sin of all mankind, and only Christ could bear the weight.

The scripture regarding the two thieves is in Luke 23:39-43

Matttt, please take a little time read Matthew, Mark Luke and John. These four books tell the story of Jesus, why died, and what it means to us. You may choose to read a Living Bible, or the Amplified Bible in order to better understand. The New Testament is the is the Testament of Jesus. If you read it, you will understand the most important thing that we can know, that Jesus died for our sin, and that only by Him can we see the Kingdom of God. Bless you brother.

And Carp, you're doing good my friend! Reading your post made my day! Bless you!
