Re: Pelosi doesn't want tuna with good taste....

To all you Republican Hypocrites,

Were was your outrage when members of the media and concerned citizens were screaming and waving their arms to draw attentions to the conditions in the Northern Mariana Island of Saipan?

Tom Delay, Ralph Reed, Grover Norquist and Jack Amboroff(sp) had dealings with companies operating on the island of Saipan and the mainstream media refused to report this story to the public.

The following is just a sample of Ralph Reed's connection to the companies operating in Saipan. If any of you conservative apologist are interested, just google Tom Delay, Grover Norquist or Jack Abmoroff along with "Saipan Mariana Island", and you'll see this story has been out their for a long time and fell to deaf ears in the MSM. So much for liberal bias.

Marianas Abortion and Prostitution?

The Cagle ad also says "Reed worked with Abramoff to deny women and children legal protection from sweat shops in the Northern Mariana Islands . . . even though our government warned that women on the islands were subject to forced abortions and children were coerced into prostitution." That's also true, though Reed says he wasn't aware of the concerns about abortion and prostitution.

Abramoff lobbied against legislation to impose federal wage and worker-safety standards on garment factories in the Northern Mariana Islands, where Chinese workers were brought in to produce clothing labeled "Made in the USA." Abramoff received just over $4 million for this work from 1998 through 2002.

On May 29 the Washington Post broke the story that Reed, an old friend of Abramoff since college days, had been hired to help in this effort as well. The newspaper described a flyer sent by Reed's marketing firm in 1999 urging Alabama conservative Christians to contact Bob Riley, then a member of the House, to vote against the legislation opposed by Abramoff. The flyer said the legislation would stop Chinese workers from coming to the island where they are "exposed to the teachings of Jesus Christ" and where many "are converted to the Christian faith and return to China with Bibles in hand."

As Cagle's ad says, however, the US Interior Department had found a year earlier that female Chinese garment workers were pressured to have abortions if they became pregnant, and that women and children were being forced into prostitution on the island. In a statement March 31, 1998, President Clinton's Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt said, "We . . . have evidence that at least some of the Chinese workers, when they become pregnant, are given a three-way choice: go home to China, get a back-alley abortion on Saipan, or get fired."

Reed's story is that he was unaware of reports that women were being mistreated, and was only working "to promote the propagation of the gospel" among Chinese workers on the island. Reed's spokeswoman Lisa Baron confirmed to the Post that Abramoff hired Reed's marketing firm for the effort. But she added, “As a defender of the unborn, Ralph was unaware of any allegations regarding inhumane or illegal treatment of workers, and he would strongly object to such practices, if true.”

I call it a "Culture of Coruption" that is "Escalating" and the demacratic controlled Congress is now a "Quagmire" with no hope to win.

LOL :D

Nice to "hear" from you jimonica . . . No, really.

And FWIW, back on topic for a moment. How can anyone debate, dispute, ignore, defend this conflict? It is not based on any perceived issues. It is absolutely factual, not denied by Pelosi, a matter of public record(s) and unassailable. Yet, they (you dem dudes) keep trying. If the shoe was on the other foot, I guarantee I would concede the point and kinda like Haut suggest that they shouldn't vote. However, unlike Haut, I would not contend that they had to, because of the closeness of the vote . . . :} That is absurd! So, what I should glean from that, is that one should abstain only when it doesnt count? That alone is flippin' hilarious . . . Am I missing something obvious? Or is this simply the stupidest thread imaginable except for it's entertainment value?

Well, good, we are clear now. This is where we differ. I want my party and individual party members to maintain their ethics. And if they don't, I will note it as bad . . . definitely not bad, but OK, because they had to . . . That earns you another :}

Cute Pointer, I believe the complaint against Pelosi was her not supporting a minimum wage increase for a certain small south Pacific island. Sooooo,,, I just pointed out how Republicans have fought against minimum wage increases for another small south Pacific island.
Pointer, I don't believe your that dense that you don't see the correlation. As usual, being a Republican apologist involves a lack of an honest debate and your one of their biggest defenders of the right wing.

BTW, here is a little snip from the article about wages.

"Abramoff lobbied against legislation to impose federal wage and worker-safety standards on garment factories in the Northern Mariana Islands, where Chinese workers were brought in to produce clothing labeled "Made in the USA." Abramoff received just over $4 million for this work from 1998 through 2002."

Thanks Pointer, I'll be waiting to see how you try to wiggle out of this one.

Jmonica, Have you ever pondered why the Federal Government shoud be in the business of telling real operating businesses that make real things, employ real people, and pay the real taxes that these Political leetches live on how much they have to pay their people. Now that's the real point here my man, (hopefully I'm correct in that guess, [li'l mind readin'], since I never checked your profile). Respectfully JR

If you right wingers want to keep this thread in the strict narrow confines of Nancy Pelosi's alleged indiscretions. This just proves a point I've been making for a long time now. As a country we've move so far to the right that today's dems are nothing but repub lite. Except for a handful of dems, they've proven to be corporatist, feeding at the corporate trawf just like the repubs.

Woah jimonica, All the bad traits of the Dems, (corruption, hypocracy, double dealin' et al), aren't 'Politician traits'; there just Republican traits: HMMMMMMM? Kool-aid tastes great eh? Joseph Stalin far enough left for ya, eh BUB?:} JR

I'm glad you raise the question "my man!" This is a subject near and dear to my heart. The reason we have the worker protections that we do is because of employer abuses of the past. Our Great and Great Great Grandfathers died on pickets lines for a minimum wage, along with 40hr work week, overtime pay, paid vacations, health insurance, workers comp. and safe clean working conditions etc...... This debate was settled years ago and our forefather paid the price and we're not going to let you right wingers pi$$ it away!

Oh, respectfully Jimonica.d:)

Jimonica, I think you need a tune up, (maybe some of the ace techs from the left can help). How does the early labor union struggles years and years ago have anything to do with the Federal Government forcing all business to pay more for labor in 2007? Maybe you are left of Joseph Stalin. JR

Re: Pelosi doesn't want tuna with good taste....

jimonica,

Your response to everything, that bad behavior can be excused by others bad behavior becomes tedious. It took the republicans years to have their arrogance and perhaps corruption exposed. Maybe they were just better at hiding it but it has taken litteraly hours for the dems to match them. Culture of corruption ring any bells? This thread is about Lil' Nancy lining her pockets on the backs of the little people by using the power of her position. Your first step isn't to acknoledge corruption, or even to deny corruption, but to excuse or mitigate corruption. If you want to never respond but use a scattergun accusation approach, don't be surprised if someone tries to bring you back on point.

If you want to discuss the corruption of Abramoff (a good buddy of Harry Reid) start a thread. But I have spent enough time dispelling the machinations and politics of personal destruction which defines the democratic party to have to listen to one more conspiracy theory used to try and cover up the issue at hand. See Cheney and the Halliburton BS.

As I said, you want to discuss this, start a thread, but your contribution to this discussion is absolutely meaningless. Dismissing bad behavior by accussing others of bad behavior is just rediculous and fails to address the tread.

Old Merc's, I agree. I love to hear how far right we have gone while debating what is clearly a socialistic concept. :}

Re: Pelosi doesn't want tuna with good taste....

"There's something fishy going on here," said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry, North Carolina Republican.

During the House debate yesterday on stem-cell research, Mr. McHenry raised a parliamentary inquiry as to whether an amendment could be offered that would exempt American Samoa from stem-cell research, "just as it was for the minimum-wage bill."

A clearly perturbed Rep. Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Democrat who was presiding, cut off Mr. McHenry and shouted, "No, it would not be."

"So, the chair is saying I may not offer an amendment exempting American Samoa?" Mr. McHenry pressed.

"The gentleman is making a speech and will sustain," Mr. Frank shouted as he slammed his large wooden gavel against the rostrum."
8)8)8) Barney is going to pop a blood vesel!

He's Jim of Jim and Monica. I am pretty sure that has been established. Apparently Monica is quite the hottie although we are still waiting for a pic with her standing in front of a monitor with iboats on the screen. I, for one, don't care what Jim looks like . . . ;)

And although Jim loves to claim how far to the right this whole world has shifted, this particular thread is about how Pelosi voted in favor of a minimum wage package that directly benefited:

a) A company headquartered in her district and
b) A company in which she (California is a community property state) owns shares worth $17 Million!!!

He may believe that finding other examples of similar behavior exempts and excuses his supreme leader from this obvious and extreme conflict of interest. I do not.

Hey Plainsman,
The dems aren't going let the repubs muck up every bill they want to pass by adding amendments. Way to go Barney!
