WOW.... Time for a new lower unit. I would not even consider repairing that much damage.

If you locate a used one just be sure it has the correct gear ratio

Re: Pics of messed up lower unit!!

Our lake has high water right now from 17 days of rain out of 22 days, Had a great day at the lake and every thing, was on our way back to the loading dock and was far enough away from shore and then out of no where that when it happened, I believe it was one of those rocks that you normally see sticking out of the water 25' from shore, like I said high water, the water was probably at 15' of water where I was at. I was able to get back to the dock to off load the passengers and back the truck up, put boat in reverse, did a turn around to point her to the trailer and loaded her with no problems, no grinding no noise ran like a top, prop shaft is still good and tight, shaft doesn't wobble or any thing, I am hoping that I spun the hub so there is no internal damage, like I said she went in reverse and forword gear with out any noise, real easy like normal.

Wow, reiterate what happened there. How fast were you moving? That is the worst one I have seen in a while.

Not fast at all, I had the dock in sight entering the cove where other boaters where just floating in the cove so I gave curtesy on was getting ready to now wake then Pow, it didn't even sound like rock, I thought I hit a tree under water, didn't even realize until I went to pull the water drain plug.
about 15 mph.

Wow, that's certainly something special. Are you insured for this? Or are you planning on footing the bill? I know my insurance covers underwater hazards. I'd consider a new lower unit and keeping that one for spare parts...too bad about the prop too, those stainless ones are pricey. I've been wanting to get one for some time, but haven't had the money. Certainly check all the gimble bearings and seals...that had to be a real hard hit on the outdrive,.

Wow that's horrible, I think you are very lucky it was able to keep propelling you and even shift gears.
Get yourself a nice SEI drive.

I hope I am as lucky as I HOPE I am, I guess we'll find out after I put a new lower unit on, I am supposed to bring it in to some one tomarrow to see what he can do, Every thing else seems to be ok:(, I hope, wish me luck and I will keep every one posted on what I did, how much, and yes I am going to keep the unit for spare parts too.

all lowers are the same, ratio is determined in the upper.

1/2 that price MAX, if you go with SEI and pay for the install. DIY and save even more.

Re: Pics of messed up lower unit!!

Loppster : I was on L.B.L lake barkley side right by Nickel branch were I put in.http://www.lbl.org/LBLGeneralMap.pdf

Mcgonegalm: Wow did you disassemble yours or is it sitting at the bottom of the lake??

Tashasdaddy: Yes, I am putting on an aluminum prop now too.

180shabah: I am getting every thing done for around $600 its a used housing in exalent condition, I looked it over with a fine tooth comb and will have a new impeller, he is taking out my parts out of mine and going to look at every thing and use my origanal parts with new seals, O rings, impeller, and 3 hrs. labor, then going right up the road to put on a reconditioned aluminum prop, At least I will hopefully be back on the lake this weekend, and be able to finish out this season, If I did it any other way I would probably be winterizing her right now for the season and fix her up over the winter, no more boating this season, so this is why I took this option, The guy here has a excellent reputation.

Damn! I didnt know you could do that to a stainless prop. I boat in SW florida ad there are many oyster beds in the shallows. Most here use stainless as aluminum disentigrates on oyster beds.....

Did it take the bottom fin (skeg?) right off? Or was it already partially gone?
