I'm having the worst luck with trying to start this motor. It has been sitting out since 1996 and I thought I could get it running. Compression is 125 and 120 and I changed the spark plugs. I put a new ignition switch and followed the wiring diagram to wire for magneto. I have a brand new battery and fuel lines. I got this boat and motor 2 days ago and I have been tinkering with it ever since. At first it would crank but not turn over and thats when i checked the spark and compression. Well all the sudden it fired and some smoked was rolling out and then it it died. I went to crank it up again and it will not even turn over. Nothing:confused: The only thing working is when I push down the choke on the switch. Any help would be awesome. I was going to surprise my girl this weekend with a boat ride but I might just be paddling. Thanks

When you say crank I assume you mean the starter turning the motor right? Check the neutral safety switch (interlock switch). Looking at the carb its on the left side of the motor, two yellow wires coming out of either end. The switch must be depressed by the linkage while trying to start, if not it will not turn over. Put your controls in neutral, check to see if the likage is depressing the switch, if not adjust. If that checks out, look at the starter solenoid.

I would also clean the carb, and order a fuel pump kit if it sat that long. Check for the kit on Amazon as it is the cheapest there, Like $6.95 + shipping or something.

as well as the above, l'd check the points gap..under the flywheel.. or clean or replace the points and condensers and check for spark

Thanks!~ I pulled the flywheel and the points looked ok. I checked resistance in the starter solenoid and it is bad. I put a jumper on the solenoid and the starter turned over. My battery was brand new but after a few cranks it went dead. (lost its charge) is that something wrong or did this happen from the jump? Thanks

Also does the fuel pump kit have the valve and spring inside the fuel body? I removed the six screws and the gasket was ok. I took the parts out of the fuel body but im not sure i put them back in. stupid me for not taking a picture. The 2 little screws i put back in but there not securing anything to the body.

Are you sure it lost its charge? sometimes bad grounds will do this to both my 55hp's. I never leave my battery hooked to my 55's overnight. Both of them drain the battery, and I have never been able to track it down. It was just easier to install a cutoff switch.

Now for the fuel pump.. the two little screws hold down a check valve but I am not sure your model has one there? Its been a while since I did mine, so I will dig around for a used one to take some pics of for ya ;)

I had literally just hooked the new battery up. It cranked for about 5 seconds real good but then it just lost its charge. I hooked a meter to it and it was about 25%charged. Weird stuff. I'm trying to find a starter solenoid but I can only find a used 1971 45 hp and mine is a 1972. You think hat it will work?

Yes a 71 should work, but the posts may not be in the same location. Oh, and does your fuel pump have a glass bowl or a black plastic filter on the outside?

May be new but was it fully charged????

Yes I checked it with a meter before i hooked it up. Does this engine have an alternator? I cant figure it out. I hope putting a working starter solenoid on will work. Fingers crossed

Re: :( Please Help me with my 1972 45 hp motor problem. Thanks!

I doubt it has an alternator/generator etc or I feel you w/h noticed it with all you have done. I have a 1970 35 HP Chrysler (probably set-up as your 45. It is or ?Was? easy to pull start with a rope if all components (fire, fuel and compression) are in good shape. The rope has gotten me home a few times from running my battery down from using lights (at night w/o gen/alt)

1. Are you seeing a good blue spark? If not were your points set at 0.020 and clean? Did you use an ohmmeter to know the point?s contacts are making good contact? Have you cleaned & set point before?
2. Do you see fuel coming into you carb when you prime the primer bulb at the fuel tank? If not have you sprayed some of your 50:1 fuel mix into the carb to see if it will fire-up a second or continue to run.
3. Are you working from a manual w/o me looking back?

Without the starter (due to issues) the eng should start and run with fire, fuel and compression using a rope if all controls are in the start positions as mentioned. I have pics of the neutral switch and linkage compressing it if needed (and many other Pics). Good Luck! jow

Ok, so it wouldn't let me upload pics but the two small silver screws should hold the check valve in place. There were no springs in my 72 model with the glass bowl. Its the six screws, pull the cover off, remove the old diaphram, replace diaphram, and reassemble. I usually inspect the 3 check valves by depressing them very gently up and down to make sure they are not stuck etc. The only one that can be removed without damaging is the center one. Hope that helps.

pics would be great! I thought being a magneto electric start I didnt have a rope to pull. I pulled the flywheel and checked the points. They looked clean and had good spring tension.

Thanks for trying tater. Yea my check valve fit down in the middle with the brass ring. There was nothing to screw down with the two little screws. I hope I didnt damage my fuel body components. I doubt there is a 72 anywhere around.

Does this engine have an alternator?

if it does not have a rectifier on the left side, near the terminal block, it is magneto ignition and doesn't have an alternator,

if it does have the rectifier, it is a battery ignition system

Two attachments:
1. The magneto ignition system is simple and easy to work with. Do you have a good blue spark?
2. My engine has a slot on the flywheel and I use about a 24-30" rope + a handle to start manually.
3. Can you start from a prime to prove you have a fuel issue vs spark or etc?
4. Up-loading Pics has some limits shown someplace. Keeping the properties under 100 KB works.

easiest way is to have someone else there as well,

if no-one else is available for the thirty seconds it takes try it at night or in a dark shed
