Thanks KM....this thread has already served it's purpose, it has some good useful info for people doing this! that seems like a viable method....and quicker, I wasn't sure if the spin of the washer would deform the foam, I will try that

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

today I cut the back shapes...this will be the top and bottoms of the frames will be a wrap around bench seat 90" wide across the back of the pontoon and 93" long down one side, the helm and helm seat are along the other side of the pontoon....the shorter benches will be 2 stand alone 60" benches located one on each side at the front of the pontoon...I opted to make these 1 piece for strength...the wrap around will split for transport and be combined on site

trying to say my well stocked basement isn't sufficient...I had 2 saw horses, a circular saw and a jig saw to work with!

lol thanks for the heads up on what to use...so epoxy wont stick/melt plastic, I have some 2 mil plastic drop cloth...may use that....

Next time I call? sure ya could tell me a story!...or you can always call me so I don't feel like I always gotta call you!

One of the benefits of Epoxy is PLASTIC. Heck I reuse the plastic cups I mix it with. It pops right out clean as a whistle. Lots different than Poly. No Stink either.

Hey you're a busy man!!! Don't want to interrupt all that hard work yer doin!!!!:p

next is cutting out 24 of these

once it is sealed in epoxy it should all go together pretty quick...or that's the plan anyways...hopefully I will have something more interesting and informative to post soon!

I will start sewing this week as well...I plan to make some videos, or try anyways

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

put the first frame together...it will have a 3/4" kickboard across the front, with at least 2 braces front to back strategically placed for hardware

Hmm, craigslist may get some of the boat funds..... Or watch for a deal on a portable contractors table saw. Usually built better & has a bigger adjustable sized tabletop, but isn't inexpensive. Esp for running 4X8 sheets, the $199 HD or Craftsman is a bit jumpy & has a very small tabletop. Might score a 'vintage' cast iron top full size shop table saw, but heavy, so transport & setup might be tough. Not a whole lot of optional stuff & fixtures, but it'd work great w/ that angle jig WOG posted awhile back.

Seat frames look good!:)

lol JB, I technically have a table saw...mounted on an 8X8 table, with router, shaper, planer all built into it as well...but it is at my dads shop (half the tools are mine) and we aren't speaking right now....I can work with the saw I got, it just takes longer!

on another note...I ordered a walking foot attachment for my Rocketeer, and it came today, so gave her a whirl...

IMG_4265.jpg

made a night and day difference...stitch on the left is without walking foot, stitch on right is with

IMG_4264.jpg

Nice even stitch pattern...I think I am going to like this, until I can buy me an actual walking foot machine

Impressive with the foot. Mine did NOT work that well. Maybe I need to try it on the Morse.

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

[I prefer to build my boxes first, often I find myself shaving 1/4 inch here or there to get things to fit correctly. Then I epoxy or resin the boxes. I find wood glue and pollyurethane bond beter on bare wood. unless you plan to use epoxy to glue together, some glues may not adhere as well to resin. I like to use clear plastic to make patterns, You can see through it. I then write notes all over including intersection points and identify the out side. It is easy to reverse a pattern otherwise.

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

thanks KM, I glued it together using PL Premium and use 1.25" X .25" crown furniture staples, will epoxy this part then finish boxing it in, I have never built a seat like this, I am just going with my gut and hoping it works like I planned...I am the worlds worst when it comes to building/using templates..I draw a sketch and just run with it. appreciate the insights on making the cushion templates

Remember to allow 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch seam allowance or your seat is going to shrink.

while I appreciate that vote of confidence JB...there is still A LOT that I can and will learn and any info is good info, even if I already have that info I may not share it in this thread, and it is my hope this will be a good thread for folks to find info if they want to make their own seats!

Re: Pontoon Seat Rebuild and Reupholstery Job

I know there are many threads on upholstry and do not feel I should start my own. I have been in the marine upholstry buisness for years and am happy to kelp anyone. I currently send away more work than I take because I cant get to it this year. I have used this forum many time to find answers to questions I had with great success. I enjoy helping others with their questions. I have learned many tricks over the years and am willing to help out. I understand there are other threads and believe somethings are worth repeating. thanks
