Did you spread the PL out with the trowel? I had a notched trowel left from my bath remodel and I skimmed it out. I just finished my second coat of resin tonight and the whole house stinks.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

Bewtween the pieces of wood I didn't use the trowel...no need to as I put so much PL down it should spread out and the edges will be sealed. Between the transom and the back glass I will use the trowel and much more PL.

I saw the big tubes, but didn't pick any up. I am thinking about just buying a box. I thought about doing something to keep the hull true, but figured the cap could just go back on.

Tomorrow I will play with the resin and might even get the transom started. I really am unsure how to clamp this to the transom back as my transom fiberglass is not flat. I am really hoping enough clamps will flaten it against the wood properly.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

It has been a long time since I had played with Poly or any resin for that matter and this is what I learned:

1. 3m 6000 series face mask with organic vapor filters rock, couldn't smell the poly with it on.

2. Poly eats my foam rollers, the cheap paint brushes work much better for spreading around resin on wood.

3. Mixing acetone in the resin can thin it out and it works pretty well for application directly on wood. The wood does seem to soak it up.

4. Old welding rods work great as resin mixers.

5. 3m 6000 series face mask with organic vapor filters rock!

6. Resin is hard to pour from a 5 gallon jug.

7. Poly is much easier to work with than I feared...so far.

I just found your thread, it's inspiring. You are doing a great job, very thorough, and it will be as if you've built a new boat! I have a little work to do on my first boat purchased a few weeks ago but it's nothing compared to what you've undertaken. Good luck!

I'm not yet good enough to be mixing that much at one time. I did pickup the 28oz PL Tubes and gun today. It was about 1.50 more for 2 1/2 times more PL.

Don't expect too much :) It's like the guys at the lake say "it looks good from 5 feet away". My boat will be very solid, able to last many years, be used nearly year round, but "it looks good from 5 feet away" is what I am shooting for on the outside and inside. If I can do 1/10th as good with perfection as the omega guys did with perfection I will be happy.

Dude,

I reading your thread, and i must say you have quite a project on your hands, Have faith that you'll get it done, and have a great craft when complete. It is amazing how much i'm learning from your posts, i hope my refit goes as well.

your dogs remind me of the German Shepards i had growing up. Great breed!!

Keep up the good work!

T

I figured with mountain biking, possiblity of a long term relationship, week long camping trips out of state, and boating/restore my life wasn't complicated enough so I figured it would be a good time to become a foster home for the German Shepherd Rescue group in my area. The next day I got a phone call about a female Dutch Shepherd that needed a place to stay for awhile...so she came home with me last night. She seems like an ok dog, but not as well socialized as mine. She doesn't know how to share the ball with JerryLee and actually attacked him for it, but she also seems to see me as the pack leader and hasn't challenged my authority....in other words all I have to do is say no and fighting for the ball instantly stops. I am surprised at how smart she is. Supposedly she was trained for personal protection and has this list of commands that look to be dutch for sit, stay, down, come, etc... Well, JerryLee is knows english sit, stay, down, come, etc and hand signals. So far Diva is putting two and two together to understand that this hand signal means down because when I do it JerryLee goes down so she mimics his behavior and then figures it out and follows the command before he does the second time around. Cool dog, but this is a lot of work and right now I really want to get the motor out of my boat.

Thank you for the kind words. Diva was a cool dog, but she went back to her owner. It is just JerryLee (Black and Tan) and I now.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I have a question that might sound stupid, but needs to be asked.

Should I sand down the backside of my transom that has been soaked with Poly Resin before sealing the transom with PL adhesive? Reason I ask is if PL will stick to the unsanded POLY then less of a chance I sand through the resin and risk the wood being exposed.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

well, if you put glass on the back side of the transom wood then yeah sand it down, if you just put resin I would maybe do a light sand with 80 grit just to give the pl a little more to bite too. On ours we actually wrapped the entire transom in fiberglass then PLed it in. Figure it this way, if you sand it down just to give it a mechanical bond and then tab the transom in then fillet and do a final 1 or 2 layers covering the entire transom what are the odds water will get in?

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I just now read the response, but I did give it a light sanding before sticking the transom. I let it cure for 48 hours and it seems stuck good.

Here are the latest pictures. Tonight I tabbed in 90% of the transom, all stringers are built, and cut the transom hole.

Here is my bolting method.

Some stringer pictures. I now have them screwed down and ready to go into install position once done with transom glass.

Here is the prep work for the PL transom bedding. This was a pain in the rear and didn't come out looking as good as I wanted, but I know that it is NOT going anywhere for a long time.

Here is the bottom transom bedding. Tomorrow I hope to finish the transom glass.

I forgot to add this picture of the transom 90% tabbed in.

Dang your moving along very quickly! I can't wait to get back to mine but I gotta build some stairs at my buddies parents house haha. Soon..........

Yeah you did ur transom the same way I did, wish I woulda used PB for the fillet instead of PL, stupid PL bubbles. If you get a chance to get some glass bubbles, cabosil, and either milled fibers or I think oops uses 1/4" csm fibers, then you can fillet and then lay down your tabs at the same time. Not only will it have less air bubbles but it will have a chemical bond and be uber super strong.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I am glad I am not the only one with PL bubbles. Although I think PB would be great and amazingly strong; PL is a pretty impressive product. I have used it before between wood/metal and the bond was unreal. I am hoping the bilgekote hides alot of my messy and I need to find a laminate Roller. The people at Home Depot have no idea what I am talking about. I also cannot seem to find a plastic squeegee ? What do these things look like?

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

Tonight I had some playtime with 1708 and OH MY GAWD does it suck up the resin. I really need a better way to spread this resin. I would love to have a roller that doesn't get eaten alive by the resin within 20 minutes, IDEAS?

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I have been using those little rollers from Lowes. They are about 1 inch think and 4 inches long. The resin hardens after about 20 so you have to switch anyway. I have bubbles in my pl also.

System-f,
You can get the plastic squeeges from US Composites or at least see what they look like, they look like a plastic scraper to me.
You can also get them here on Iboats.
Sounds like your really moving along too.
Good luck

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

Turns out US composites has some neat rollers, too. The fiberglass supply house in my area also has some nice rollers, but they have a $125 order minimum.
