Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

GRRRR air bubbles on the transom glass!!!! GRRRRR

OH well. I debated over grinding it out, but it is between the CSM on the transom and the overlapping layers of CSM. I don't seem to have any air bubles between the transom wood and CSM. Still this ticks me off as I took my time trying to get the glass down perfectly. I would have been much better off to have used one large piece of CSM for the transom instead of pieces. Where the transom is tabbed in with CSM and 1708 I have not found any air bubbles.

Stringers are setting in the hull with a good couple layers of resin on them waiting to be bedded. The outer after stringers are already bedded.

I know, I know. I have been sitting here trying to deciede if I want to go bed the stringers or not. The temp is going to be warm enough for PL, so I might do it.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I am going to start this off by sharing my experience with PL.

The good:

1. It is cheap.
2. You can get it on Sunday
3. It is easy to apply.
4. 'Pots' won't gel on you.
5. It is very strong
6. Waterproof
7. Poly sticks to it ( so it seems)
8. It sticks to wood and cured glass well.

The bad:

1. It is ugly ugly ugly, especially with an untrained had like mine.

I used one large tube of PL on the front half of the center stringer and have 4 1/2 left to go.

One thing I noticed is the my two center stringers are off on the rear by the transom. They are almost a full 1/2" taller than the outside stringers!!! I was so busy gettig the frame work right I forgot to check this out and now what would have been an easy adjustment with the bandsaw is going to be slightly more complicated!!!! I feel so very stupid for this mistake.

On to the pictures:

The stringers are in. Everything in front of the cross member where the cinder block sits is level.

The transom is in, see the pretty air pockets  Also you can kind of see how the stringers closer to the bilge are taller than the little outer stringers....not good unless I want to pool water in the rear of the boat.

PL goop before cleanup:

The front was hard to get into. This is before PL cleanup:

And the back.

Frisco, you can see the 7018 tabbing at the bottom. I still have more to do on the sides.

All the boat repair shops here do not know what 1708 is. The do not use it at all, but two layers of CSM and then one layer of standard woven mat. I know I can buy it online, but I really want to keep my dollars in my home town (I am a small business owner).

Composite One in North Richland Hills has 1708. It is also called biax. At this point I am happy to keep my money in the US.

There is also a local glass supply shop by the lake, but I think they are closed for the Holiday. When I wanted he had all the cloth/mat I needed by the yard and would probably fill my 5 gallon container with resin when it is empty as he said he didn't have any 5 gallon containers.

System-f,
Don't beat yourself up to bad. After all it is wood and can be corrected, just need a little time.:)
I have seen some of the folks put them in to high on purpose then adjust them to the height they want.
You still doing a great job.:D
Keep it up.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

It turns out the stringer wasn't that far off at all...only 1/4". 5 minutes with the jig saw leveled the stringer right out.

Stringers are beded and it is a beautiful warm day here so the boat is outside letting the sun shine on the PL. Friday we glass in the stringers and I might start on the deck templates Saturday.

Bob, thanks again for the kind words.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

cool ya got it striaghtened out...yea (stringers)
yeah even with careful measuring it is easy enough to mess up on the somewhat complicated boat work.............

EVERYONE messes up the first time! lol sounds like its on track again anyways...so Rock on

wow you are definetly past the 50% mark on this.....it oughta go fast once you get the floor in!

splash time = SOON!

ps drill a small hole in the bubbles and inject some epoxy or poly resin in em using a turkey baster

system-f,
I knew you would take care of it. You will have that deck in before you know it. :D
vegasphotoman,
That's a pretty cool idea about drilling and filling.
Now, I remember why I'm addicted to this site.
Keep it going System-f.

Once the paint is over I will stop worrying. Everything seems a long way off until I get the paint done and I have no $$$ right now for my $500 in paint and deck coating :(

Since I plan on being here for awhile, even after this project, I should share my real name: Keith. It feels weird being called system-f, but it is a screen name that is easy for me to remember.

Great, now I FEEL WIERD...(calling you Keith)...so many posts calling you System-F uuuuhg......... lol :D

this boat repair stuff doesnt have to be perfect, it is already better than factory with your thorough work.....especially sealing in the cutout for the outdrive....now it will NEVER get wet in that transom

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Keith!

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I hope everyone had a good turkey day!

Tomorrow this is the plan (let's see how well I stick to it):
9am, get to Lowes and get rollers and paper towels
10am, get the boat out, touch up grinding and wipe down with acetone
11am, setup resin and glass stations
12pm, friends get here
12:01pm, friends start mixing resin and ready to cut glass I missed
12:02pm, start glassing stringers
5pm, drink (not me, driving later) beer and feed friends
6:30pm, go to Fuzzy Tacos and hang out with boat guys while showing pics of the day

Man that does sound like a great plan. See my friends will not get their hand dirty. They all have fancy new boats and think I am just crazy restoring tios old "dinosaur" . But when my boat gets the looks at the dock because theirs looks just like everyone else's, I love it.

Re: Poor Man's Skiboat...Restore?

I thought my boating friends were like that, but

1. has a 27 foot baja that just put a blower on his 502, he is pulling the engine this winter to get the bottom end completely redone and balanced.

2. has a 24 foot something with a 454 drag motor with marine cam and alpha 1 that survives for about a season unless he takes it easy. He is doing a deck this winter, which turned into stringers once he got into it.

3. third has a 96 monterrey that needs no work and he keeps it stock and takes good care of it.

4. The other people either own boat shops or build speed type boats.

There is definatly too much 'go fast' mentality with my crew, but I like to ski and explore on as little money as possible. I am giving up my stereo upgrade and possibly tower for some reliablity upgrades. We will see how it goes. I did pass up a deal on a MERC 260 (350) and drive, but didn't want to add the 150lbs in the stern and don't need to go fast. The 6 is good on gas, too. Maybe a quadrajet upgrade since my manifold looks to be spread bore, but we will see.
