Re: power trim... no power trim... pics

yeah I'm going to stick with the DIY I think. I could buy everything required minus the lower supports for under 120.00

I'm still trying to figure out what the deal is with the bar in between the the 2 manual assist cylinders.

Replace the "shock absorbers" with hydraulic cylinders, install a used trim pump/resevoir from a inboard/outboard, and have a local hydraulic shop fab some hoses.

Might be pretty simple. Or not.

You might be referring to #123.....listed as "trail lock arm assembly"......the rams #79 are actually listed as "shock absorbers".....although there is only one pictured there are two listed for that motor.

Those aren't rams. That is a picture of a mid section without electric trim/tilt. Those are shock absorbers.

IF the unit has tilt/trim it will have those shock absorbers replaced with hydraulic rams, and the pump screws to the outside of the engine bracket where the 3 screw holes form a triangle on #70

A TILT ONLY (not trim) unit replaces ONLY ONE of the shock absorbers and the pump mounts in the same location.

Yep.....thats what i thought i said ;)....."rams" was used as a generic term......this was my attempt at a correction from a previous post.

Not quite.....see the power tilt/trim schematic that i posted in entry #16.....this motor has the "outrigger" style ptt setup.

yeah and thats what the mechanic told me as well. those are shocks in case the motor hits something in the water.

the strange thing is that I have the system as above but the plate on my motor is for the one with the tilt trim assembly as well. So really there's nothing stopping me from leaving the shocks in place and fabbing up something to give it a tilt system as well. trim is to lift the motor where tilt is to tilt it correct?

Not really, the trim on this style system doesnt lift the motor in the vertical plane as such......best way i can think of describing it is the trim is just a finer adjustment of the motors angle of propulsion and wont "kick in" until the motor reaches its normal drive range after being tilted down.....you are correct about the tilt function.

well I think I'll just be happy with a tilt system and leave the trim to the thought of a new boat lol.
well the rainy season is here so I guess it's time to start getting her ready for next season.

the outrigger rams are larger and fairly expensive. they have a long stroke and require a pump with large reservoir capacity. power tilt for your engine is cheap and easy. power trim is not. Used power trim systems in running order routinely sell on ebay in the $350-$550 range. For power tilt all you really need is a generic dual action actuator with aluminum body. I have boxes full of new mercury 10-25HP trim rams which should fit under you swivel bracket and use the existing lower shaft. I'm not sure about upper eye diameter. Some type of bushing or adapter may be needed. As regards pumps ... for tilt only you can use a new chinese volvo aq290 pump ($130). Get an 2x3x1/4" piece of aluminum or some sheet metal and fabricate a mounting adapter. go to a brake store and buy some 3/16" CuNi tubing with standard brake fittings. I don't think the steel tubing sold at NAPA will hold up in marine use. You should have a working system for $150ish plus time and wiring. buying used pumps for this kind of project is a bad idea. You would just be building in a $200 repair. pumps go 15-20 years and that's that. the rubber seals go bad whether you use it or not.
