I just purchased a reconditioned 140 Mercury inline 6. I bought a couple of gallons of Quicksilver 2 cycle oil from a Merc dealer. $25. a gallon. Is this normal. I thought it was a little high. I have seen Penzoil at the local stores at $15. a gallon. I do plan on using the quicksilver. Just looking for a good outlet to buy it.

Around here:
Pennzoil petroleum, $7 a gallon
Pennzoil blend, $10 a gallon.
Pennzoil Full Synthetic, $20 a gallon.

Boat dealers and convenience stores around here charge about $5 more, and and Quicksilver, Yamaha, BRP, oil is another $5

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

I am sure this has probibly been on here in the past. But is Penzoil as good as Quicksilver? I don't think that the Walmart theory of cheaper is better. I want to know that I am using a good quality product. I have been boating for almost 30 years. I used Standard oil Company 2 cycle for many years. I think 25 years ago I paid something like $2.50 or $3. a quart for it. My main reasoning behind this is last summer I lost a cylinder in an outboard. The cylinder is scuffed. This tells me lack of lubrication. I don't want that to ever happen again. Not sure exactly what happened. I was on vacation, I had mixed some of my gas with a store brand 2 cycle. That was what was avalible. Also had bought some pre/mix at a couple of different marinas. So I am not sure what caused the problem. But I know that I want a good quality oil. And I will only mix my own from now on.

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

Look at it this way, Quicksilver(Mercury) does not make it's own oil. Not BRP, Nor does Walmart. I've used Walmart and Penzoil "basic" oils (Among others) for many years with no ill effects, as have many others I know. Penzoil is just as good as any other non-synthetic oil in my opinion. As far as your problems of lack of lubrication causing problems, as long as you mix it with the gas properly, it can only be the fault of something else. This is just my opinion and of course, it may be tainted, but has proven itself over the years......

Anything you can get now is better than what was available when that motor was new. Don't lose any more sleep. It's far more likely that the cylinder failed due to carbon build-up in the rings than lack of lubrication. Depending on the model, it is also possible that a carb restriction caused it to fail depriving the piston from enough fuel carrying the lubrication. But an oil failure would take out more than 1 cylinder. It wasn't the oil.

I have used regular Quaker State 2 stroke oil in my outboards for 35+ years. In the early years we did lots of touring and skiing and general hard use.Only one failure. My one year old 1988 50 Evinrude I accidently started mixing at 100:1.What a fool!It apparently had no problem(fairly light use)until my son had a skiing weekend.Lost only the upper cylinder to the tune of $800.I keep the bill posted where I store my 2 stroke oil.

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

I'll come to Merc's defense here regarding the price of the oil. The price has a lot to do with thousands of dealers ordering it by the pallet. Other mainstream oil producers sell to megastores by the trainload. There's no way to compete with that. But there's a few advantages to using the Merc stuff. First, it meets or exceeds their specific requirements. Second, if their product causes a failure, they back it up. No having to go thru lawyers and months or years of litigation and red tape.

They are beginning to get into the megastore market with the Quicksilver brand and prices will probably have to come down to compete side-by-side on the same shelf with other popular brands. They'll sell more, and quantity always brings the price down.

The oils now contain additives that significantly reduce carbon build-up. But they don't stop it or make existing carbon go away. Carbon causes a lot of powerhead failures and motors years old probabbly have a lot. Do a De-carb once a year and you shouldn't have to worry about that. It's covered up in the FAQs. :)

Would you like to explain this statement, I for one find it very hard to beleive.

Walmart shops for the very lowest price for there name stamped oils, they change manufactures as often as I change socks!

I beleive that the Walmart oil is probably the worst oil you can by.

Now, with that said, I would run it in a pinch and have no problem doing it, Its a TC-W3 oil and will work OK. My feeling is just that you can do better.

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

As for the problem with my outboard loosing a cylinder. I don't know what was to blame. The only thing I want to make sure is with the new motor I have no problems. I will not use an unknown oil such as Walmarts. I understand that someone makes it, but I do know at 1 time there motor oil was recycled. This was probibly 10 years ago and it was in very fine print on the back of the bottle. I am sure that there is a oil that is as good as Quicksilver, and thats what I may use in a pinch. Something like Penzoil, QuakerState or Citgo. My problem is that QuickSilver is not that easy to buy in my area. I would be happy to buy a 4 or 6 gallon case if I could find a good price. I think that $25 per gallon is a little high.

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

Regardomg the scuffed piston -- it probably was not the oil that caused the damage. Oil is not selective in that it can't pick a particular part to damage or not damage. Chances are that cylinder ran lean because of a carb or carbon build-up problem. If this were an oil failure, all cylinders would show the problem. Running the most expensive oil you can buy is no guarantee you will not have an engine failure. In fact it changes the odds very little if at all. Failure to change water pump impellers, failure to treat the fuel when stored, failure to run carbon guard or equivalent, and failure to keep carbs and fuel systems clean are all great ways to destroy an engine.

This is true to a point, and I see where you are coming from, "BUT"!!!

Using a very good oil, which the most expensive oils are generally synthetics will likely guarantee that you wont have the carbon issues that you may have with other oils. (Providing that you dont have carbon issues when you start using them), Thats why you should do a good decarb first. Its true that you cant use any oil that will protect against a lean condition.

LubeDude,
Been looking around at every store I go into trying to find synthetic 2 stroke oil. Found some the other day and bought it. Just before opening the bottle, I read PWC-2stroke (personal water craft 2 stroke)....not for use where a TC-W3 oil is used.
Why?

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

My Husky chain saw manual also says not to use TCW-3 oil, I think it is something to do with the ASH content and heat generated. Although if you look at the Penzoil bottle labels it says it can be used for such?? I had a qt of KLOTZ synthetic Motorcycle racing oil which I have been using for my saw, but don't know what I will go to when it is gone.
But back to the topic, WallyMart was using Shell oil, which is Texaco/Penzoil & something else. Probably Exxon. They are all good oils. I personally use Penzoil Super Blend Synthetic for $10@ gal. in my 200 hp Merc carbed engine. I has about 700 hrs on the new powerhead now and runs great. My orginal threw a rod cap, so cannot blame that on oil.

Even though these engines are water cooled, some of them have whats known as power valves. These engines require an oil that keeps these clean. Now, you could use this oil in your outboard if you had to, but It isnt recommended as it would likely cause a bit of residual oil to build up in the case and cause excesive smoking at start up and some carbon issues in other places as its not an ashless oil.

Stick with a TC-W3 oil.

Re: Price for 2 cycle oil

The oil I bought at wallyworld was Pennzoil (yellow jug with their name on it and all) and the way the carton was labeled, I wouldn't doubt that it's the same stuff that they (Pennzoil) market to Merc...makes me assume they are the co that Merc uses.

And if you are looking for 100% syn, Pennzoil makes that and I just put a pint into my oil tank yesterday that I bought at Wallyworld.

Now, I'm not a Pennzoil fan, but I have noticed that they are catering heavily to the marine industry.

Mark
